Interesting you defend Hanowski and then state "he is just about as good as Pitlick." Do you mean he is not???

How about the fact that he played a couple of games less than the 2nd leading scorer on his team. Was he healthy during the games he played in? How about the fact that others played in the league while battling injuries from football. What about other players missing some games or playing hurt?

Mr. Hockey should be the states best player. Hanowski is a very good player. The fact is, he plays weaker foes in the high school league. When he was up against his peers in the Elite League he did not lead the pack.
Give it a rest. Here are my thoughts.. Pitlick shouldn't be on the list for ALOT of reasons even though he is a great hockey player. Tyler Lapic isnt even the leading scorer on his team and has 78% of his points against teams with a losing record. Dan Delisle is a NHL scout prospect thus how he got on this list, he has done nothing against tougher competition this year. The three most credible candidates on the list are Leddy (my favorite), Hanowski (what he has done over his career and with his team this year is remarkable), and Everson (probably the states best pure scorer). Danny Mattson is a great choice and a great player but is too hot and cold and does not compete every night. What Jersey do you think Lee will wear to the Banquet...Notre Dame?
I think pitlick is young to be on this list. He should be winning this award next year to bad he will be winning games in the WCHA :D

But I could be wrong.
My thoughts exactly.

Hanowski will win because regardless of the schedule LF plays, his accomplishments are very impressive. Leddy's a nice steady player with a high fall draft ranking. Until he can begin to carry his team further and begin to dominate a team deep into sections or state, he will never compare to the offensive talents of a player like Ness. Everson has had the luxury of playing with two of the top centers over his HS career and has yet to develop the ability to make plays on his own, but he can finish. Mattson is a pure offensive threat, with great hands, shot and has great vision on the ice to make plays. The physical part of game needs to progress. Delise has NHL size, but game is still very much developing, big upside. Lee is ranked high by scouts for his complete game, his athleticism and being able to score and finish as in his role last year, and be the playmaker as his role is this year. Thought to be the most physical dominant player in HS. His puck control and use of body allow him to excel down low. If Edina makes it to state that should be 5 years in a row. This years group has potentially five you could make cases for.

Mr. Hockey Finalists Announced

Tiny by WCHBlog on Feb 11, 2009 7:54 PM PST

The ten finalists for Minnesota's Mr. Hockey Award have been announced. The finalists are as follows:

Dan DeLisle, Totino Grace(Minnesota-Duluth)
Marshall Everson, Edina (Harvard)
Ben Hanowski, Little Falls(St. Cloud)
Tyler Lapic, New Prague(Wisconsin)
Nick Leddy, Eden Prairie(Minnesota)
Anders Lee, Edina(Notre Dame)
Danny Matson, Holy Angels(North Dakota)
Zach Palmquist, South St. Paul(Minnesota State)
Tyler Pilick, Centennial(Minnesota State)
Max Tardy, Duluth East(Minnesota-Duluth)

A pretty solid list. I'm guessing that this is the first time all ten candidates have a college commitment in place this early.

Bloomington Jefferson's Casey O'Connor given the Frank Brimsek Award, given to the state's top goaltender. O'Connor had impressive numbers, though he didn't see that many shots on the season. Duluth East's Matt Cooper also had really good numbers, and Alexandria's Matt Hemingway might be the most talented senior goalie, but O'Connor was a nice choice.

Well who is going to win it?
Leddy, hands down. Gopher recruit and no secondary playing level (USHL) required, given his past experiance and high level teams he has played. Leddy will take over R.J. Andersons leaving position on the Gopher team. A local kid that has given up multiple opportunities further his play at the USHL level and at Ann Arbor, only to lead his high school team to a #1 ranking in conference and a #1 ranking in Section 6. Played overseas on the Elite 17-18 teams. He did his hockey career right and should be a model for high school players to stay at home, mature and lead his high school team. Leddy will play a major role in getting EP to the State. There are too many feaked parents thinking they need to push their kids to forgive their senior seasn to play at the USHL level and not let them enjoy being a senior on their high school team. You can't get that year back. Let them mature in the high school settings and maybe play 1-2 years at the USHL to maybe get that D1 scholarship. Personally, I think this should go to a kid that will play at an in state college and what better than a U of M recruit. Just my thoughts.

Lots of good points about Leddy but, the Gophers are in need of players who can play at the college level. It is time for them to have players go from High School to juniors for at least a year. Given that Leddy should play a year of juniors befor joining the Gophers.
As far as Mr. Hockey, an all around player who makes others look good. Can score and take over a game when necessary as well as a leader. I am voting Danny Mattson.

All great hockey players and good candidates. Congratulations to all the nominees. Lakeviewing you're right on Leddy being a model player but don't agree that it's the best path for every hs hockey player. There is no one right path for everyone. It's great that it worked out well for these young men to stay in HS and finish their senior year. There are others though that chose alternate paths that are equally as happy with their choices. I'm sure Sydney Crosby does not regret the choices he's made!

I think the award should go to the best total player - the one that makes everyone on his team better and works hard in both zones. The one who does the little things that create the opportunities and also the one that can come up with the big goals and assists or the strong defense to stop a goal. Hopefully PR attempts will not factor into the ultimate choice. Good luck to all the candidates.
