hockeya1a wrote:So if no practice will there be refunds to the girls? is it fair that some get 4.5 more hours of ice time than the others?
and won't it be harder for some of the girls to play togather with limited practice.
Pretty sure, there won't be any refunds. I was curious what the information said about the practices and went to the Minnesota Hockey site: http://www.minnesotahockey.org/news/news.asp?ID=206. "The eight Festival teams have a maximum of 4.5 hours of practice ice that they may use at the coaches discretion".

No, it is not fair and pretty safe to write the teams that practice together should play better together and then their individual skills are likely better displayed, too. The players that are from the same HS teams would likely play better together due to their familiarity at least without practices so the individual HS representatives are at an additional disadvantage without team practices.

Sounds like Section 4 may have the model for other sections to follow. It would be great if the sections all used the same model and hopefully they will look at gaining greater consistency for future years. I am sure it all depends on whether the current system is identifying the players by the final phase that they are seeking whether they will revisit the tryout process.

Section 8 16's will not be having practices. But many are playing in the Warroad Hockeytown Classic between Section 8 A/AA on March 22, 23

Section 2 will not have practices either. They used all 4.5 hours in tryouts and I believe the thought was that since the tryouts were so late and there were only 21 skaters and 2 goalies it was pretty much the team practicing. I don't have a problem with it.

Dani Williams, MN Thoroughbreds - a U16 NDP Forward is a D in Section 5
Catie Ladner, Chaska - a U16 NDP Defender is not listed on any team - not sure if she is injured?

Catie missed a lot of time this year! she is an awsome player so I hope she gets back to tiptop shape again soon.

So anyone have scores from the tournaments this weekend?

MNhockeylover wrote:So anyone have scores from the tournaments this weekend?
So far I know of only 2 scores

U16 Section 4 beat Section 2 - I wasn't sure about the score but it was something like 6-1 or 6-3.

U17 Section 2 beat Section 4 (8-3) The final score was surprising because looking at this game on paper I would have guessed that Section 4 would have beaten Section 2 handily

So how close was the game in scoring chances or was it lopsided?

In the U17 Sec 4 was leading 2-1 after the first half. What was odd is Ramsey player forward in the first half, then played D in the second half.
I thought you could only play one position F or d not both.

I don't know what the rules are but Section 2 had a poor turnout for Phase I. Only 21 skaters showed up for the tryout so they only had to cut 3 players. The decision was made to take the 18 best skaters regardless of position so they ended up with 8 D on the team (Hinueber and Thotland are D but are listed as F). We were told that each of the D will probably rotate to the F position during the tourney but all 8 are trying out as D. Of the 3 girls that were cut two were D.

Sec 4 U17 had a better day, 4-0 (Rolando started in G today) first half and 9-2 final over Sec 3. Today the same shots that didn't drop last night dropped today.

I think Sec 3 lost last night 6-5 in shoot out 1-1 at half and shots were 36-11 for Sec 3. So Sec 2 may be able to move to final.

Section 1 U17 won two on Saturday...

Beat Section 8 17's 9-1, great effort, strong D, good goaltending... only goal given up was a penalty shot...

Beat Section 7 17's 4-0, again good D, outshot Sec 7 38-18...

Girls have played well... nice to see from the southern girls... :D

I think it was pretty much the same kids however I do think that the talent gap between the top and the middle is closing. There were lots of good players out there. I think the evaluators will have a tough time picking the "final 54".

Agree with OnEdge lots of good play - a few players had a great three games and stood out many others though had 1-2 good/great games. Lots of talent to pick final 54 from. Lots of "Baby Blue Jacket Evalutors" around the rink they put in long hours covering the three days - some very good hockey coaches acting in the role including a few college coaches from MN schools - I am sure they had to weigh through many reports and could come up with a number of scenarios.

The event appeared to attract only a limited number of D1 scouts - I saw 8: UM, UND, BSU, SCSU, MSU and from out east Providence, RPI, UCONN - were there others? Considering the number of top U16 and U17 players they can get a look at little surprised in low showing.....and continues to support D1 coaches are looking at talent more outside of MN and the view of MN talent is dropping compared to CDN, Hockey Academies......got a little feedback that many schools didn't come because they will be gone Wed-Sunday of this week scouting the USA Hockey National Tournament in Rochester, NY.

I have to agree, the hard part will be coming up
there are a lot of good players out there to choose from,
not a job i would want.
Good luck to all the girls! and enjoy every moment of it.

Section 2 looked very strong all game!

Ramsey (Tonka) & Buie (Edina) stood out for Sec 2, and the goalies from both Sec 1 & Sec 2 played very well, lots of tremendous saves at both ends of the rink...
Section 1 played better in the Quarters & Semis, but still made it a very good game until the open netters...

I agree w/ OntheEdge's statement that the play of all the sections was very good, and we saw some great hockey from many, many young ladies over the weekend. It was fun to see Minnesota girls hockey at its best, good games, good teamwork, good individual efforts, really fun to see the improvement in girls hockey in Minnesota... :D

It was a very enjoyable weekend for me, as a Dad, and as a spectator of good hockey, but I do not envy the evaluators work ahead of them in picking 54 from those good groups... Good luck to all, have fun, enjoy the opportunity, after all, these kids are playing the best sport in the world, in the State of Hockey... 8)
