Loose and Lose are two very different words :!:

When it comes to the state hockey tournament I always try to root for the 7A and 7AA teams. I will agree on this the past two times Virginia/MIB went to state including last year was pretty hard to watch, not sure if it was just unexperience because it was only there 2nd state trip ever. Hibbing has went to state quite a few times in the past few years and has proven to do well. Int'l Falls has also done well when making it, although they haven't won the state section champions since 02-03, they did do good there, and had a great team in 2003 and the past few years. It makes it very hard though when you teams teams constantly switch sections like Hermantown, Duluth Marshall, Central, Denfeld, Proctor Etc. What I am asking is that we try and set aside the drama and bring some good sportsmanship in the games. I wouldn't count the Falls out as you say, just like I wouldn't call Marshall out yet despite their 7-2 loss to Virginia, Everyone knows in sections anything can happen. I still say all top 4 teams have a good chance at state and none should be counted out as this point.
If the jackets play the way they did against virginia and hermantown chances are they will end up going to state. But ifalls is not an easy team to beat. Hibbing has a history of winning at the IRA, and they have a history of losing at the DECC. I think hibbing should beat the falls, as long as BOTH teams play fair and the reffing is decent. Anything could happen at section finals.

I beleve that any team can win come playoff time, it's going to be the team with the better conditioning, and the will to win that will come out on top, which could be any team in the top 5 in this section.

Does anyone have scores from the play in games yet?

pretty soon Rapids will be 7 SINGLE A or maybe move into the section with Warroad. I have a feeling with them loosing in the quarterfinals, they will move down. Probably Cloquet will either move to 5A or 7A. These are just my thoughts.

Its getting harder to compete with the cities teams....

Switching from AA to A really depends on class size. I'm pretty sure there's a standard number that if you have more kids than that number you must be AA, but don't quote me on that as im not positive. I don't think you can change classes for the sake of changing because of a couple of rough years. I don't anticipate rapids dropping classes.

On a related note, I wish they would move the game out of Grand Rapids to a more central location. Of 10 teams in the section, only Greenway is within 30 miles of the arena. Some teams would have hauls of over two hours if they made it to this game. Hopefully they move it to Virginia after they renovate the arena there... or just move it to the Hippodrome in Eveleth. That would reduce travel to a maximum of about 1 hour 45 minutes for the farthest teams (Two Harbors and I Falls). The rest would be within an hour - or at least close to it.

Travel times to Grand Rapids (estimated):
Greenway ~15 minutes
Hibbing ~45 minutes
Virginia ~1 hour, 10 minutes
Eveleth ~1 hour, 15 minutes
Duluth Central ~1 hour, 45 minutes
Duluth Marshall ~1 hour, 45 minutes
Ely ~2 hours, 20 minutes
Two Harbors ~2 hours, 30 minutes
International Falls ~2 hours, 30 minutes
Silver Bay ~3 hours
there is no other arena that has the seats to hold the amount of people for a semi game other than rapids.

I really wish one of the semi games would be in the falls. Then the other teams would know what its like for the falls to have to travel and the arena holds plenty of seats
Even if the game was in the falls, they wouldnt play there?

why should there be a playoff games up there. The majority of the teams are from the range. Who cares if the falls have to travel, thats there problem...

Rapids and Cloquet both are Class A size but opt up. I don't see either of them dropping down in the immediate future. Too much pride in both towns.

Of course, I said that about Hibbing too, so....

Grand Rapids is Class A for hockey based on high school populaiton.
Every four years, they have made the election to play in the Class AA play-offs.

Grand Rapids school population for measuring class participation is 978.
Well below the 1342 cut-off for AA hockey schools.

Intl Falls to Grand Rapids is 120 miles.
If you can avoid the deer and the cops it should take you 1 hr and 45 minutes not 2 1/2 hours.

Duluth East = 1205 class A opting up....

Moorhead and Brainerd are the only two outstate northern schools that are AA.

St Cloud is neither outstate or northern.

well Hibbing just isn't as good as they used to be. I heard Rapids Bantam As are one the best teams ever so they probably won't move down, but Cloquet, they seem to be having a hard time with AA as of late.... who knows but i see both schools moving down sometime.

Cloquet's peewees and bantams are pretty good, I dont think they will change.

East Grand Forks has a strong youth program right now, they could easily compete with Roseau, Moorhead, Brainerd, St Cloud Tech (the top 4 in 8AA :D ).

You serious? They have a hard time competing in 8A! Good luck to them with the big boys.

Read it again.
Their bantam and peewee A teams this year have handled all the teams I mentioned. And the squirt a & b are good also.
Their B level programs are dominant against those teams also.
No one in section 8A will touch them in the 2012 to 2015 seasons.

Is it there or their? Hold your horses, boss. The powers in Hockey Town may very well sign some of those youth players to a contract to play for the Warrior varsity so don't be so sure the little Green Wave pee wee and bantams will grow up to be Varsity Green Wavers. Time will tell, but I will be your prediction will miss the mark.
