Actually, Eveleth was the #1 NORTH seed and Duluth Central was the #4 SOUTH seed back when they split the section into North and South subsections. Central won that game 6-5. Silver Bay won the section that year as the #1 South seed.

While it was an upset, I don't think its in the same class as the Apollo/LF game. Most of the teams in 7A were very good class A teams back then, so it wasn't unheard of that a a lower seed knocked off a higher seed... especially with the North/South seeding system.

Best upset ever may be taking it too far, but no doubt a big upset. Mariucci was almost 3/4 full for that one, and it was played at 10am on a Saturday if I recall correctly.

Dear puck Ranger let me clarify the loss in 1998 that eveleth suffered to a duluth central team. Eveleth was the defending class A champs from 1997 and were ranked #1 in class A entering the playoffs. Central pulled an amazing upset beating them in the Hipp. They may have been #4 which would equate to a7,or8. in the section.

No.

In the 1990's Eveleth won the State title in 1993 and 1998 in Class A.

Mahtomedi wasn't the 9 seed nor had a losing record like Apollo.

I don't know what the section seedings were, but in 1996 a 10-15-1 White Bear Lake team beat a 22-2 Hill-Murray team 4-3 in OT in the section final. Hill had beaten WBL twice earlier in the season by 7-0 and 6-2 scores. In addition, that Hill team beat Edina 5-3 and Dave Spehar's Duluth East squad twice, 5-4 in OT and 4-3. That was the East team that lost to Apple Valley in the legendary 1996 6 OT game and Edina lost to AV the next night in the final.

Wouldn't mind seeing a repeat of that WBL upset this year.

I agree with Mite-dad. Anytime STA loses it's the biggest upset ever. Considering all they do is play AA teams and win 20 games a year.

Correction via a post stpaul made in another thread:

"The 1996 Hill-Murray Pioneers. They had 8 future Division 1 players. They were 22-1 when they lost to an 8-14-1 WBL team 4-3 in OT in the Section Semifinal at the Coliseum. They had beaten WBL 7-0 and 6-2 earlier that year. To try to get even they beat WBL 12-1 at the beginning of the next season."

So it was a section semifinal and the Bears were 8-14-1 at the time of the game. I'd have to put that as a bigger upset than Apollo taking down Little Falls this year. I don't think the Flyers have eight future D-1 players on their team.

I know Mahtomedi was decent, but STA was (and always is) rated #1 or #2 in the state, not just the #1 seed in their section. And to lose it two years in a row was a fairly hefty upset.
