- absolutely agree!

STA, EP, Duluth do they all really deserve that many players...
.
If it helps, several of the seven elite "EP" players are fairly recent transfers. One of the largest HS in Minnesota (graduating classes range from 800- 650 students) has to rely on transfers to field their 17 man varsity hockey team?

Development problem in the association or is something else amiss?

I thought the discussion of transfers deserved its own thread, so I split that off from this one.

Thanks to those who answered my questions about the "missing" players. BodyShots, if you can keep us posted on the WBL situation, that would be great.
I see 3 players who played Elite League last year, but aren't listed on a roster this year (unless I missed them), and are not on our "leaving early" list. Anyone have any info on:
Max Coatta (Minnetonka)
Jake Bischoff (Grand Rapids)
Lance Carney (WBL)

Otherwise, they seem to have gotten things mostly right. I'm sure there are a few borderline makes or misses that we could argue about, but nothing egregious, I don't think. Some scattered notes:
-It's nice to see some southern players in the Elite League this year, even if they're all from one team.
-Nine from STA seems a bit ridiculous, and curiously, their second-highest returning scorer from last year is not one of the nine.
-Given how well big programs usually do in the Elite League, I'm a little surprised not to see one or two other Edina players. Also, does this mean Hurley is coming back? I suppose it's no guarantee he won't leave, but most players headed for the USHL have probably made their choice by now, one way or the other.
-I know they have a lot of good youth players at private schools, but it seems crazy that a program like Wayzata can't field an Elite League skater.
-2 players from Hill-Murray has to be a low for them.
The player you are referring to from STA lives in Wisconsin- but can play for Team WI in the league, also several HM players went to play juniors as did all players listed at the top of this message.
So your saying they should NOT take the best players because they come from the same school. Now that is wrong. The league is suppose to showcase the most talented players regardless of what school they play the regular season with. It looks to me like overall they did that. Are there some that got overlooked probably but remember there was a tryout and maybe they didn't bring their A game.
Remember these kids have been scouted during the previous seasons.
Kids that maybe some feel should have gotten a tryout and didn't should have played every game(JV and Varsity) as hard as a tryout. People ARE watching!!

by ripping1
True they are scouted to receive a invite to try out. 1 or 2 scouts see them during the season and think they are good, they invite them to try out. Then at tryouts they are evaluated against the others that were chosen for the same reasons. It is important to play your best every time you take the ice. It is easy to pick out the rock stars on the individual HS teams but bring all the rock stars together and have them play against each other it is a very different picture.

I thought It is pretty amazing that there alot of big metro schools or close to the metro with little or no representation at all. Some of these schools have had very good programs in the past... Maybe all those "good players" are at privates?? (not counting goalies)

Woodbury (0)
Eastridge (0)
Lakeville North (0)
Roseville (o)
Chaska (0)
Chan(0)
Armstrong (0)
Hastings, Cottage Grove, Red Wing (0)
Wayzata (0)
Chamlpin Park (0)
Hill Murray (1)
St.Louis Park (1)
Elk River (1)
Lakeville South (2)
Bloomington Jefferson (2)
Burnsville (2)

STA/EP have 16. Those 2 schools have 7 more than the other 18 schools combined.....I just find that interesting. They cant find (1) player from Zata, Woodbury, Eastridge, Roseville, Chaska, Hastings, Cottage Grove,Champlin, L. North..??

It is fascinating, though when you look through at the lists of returning players, it becomes fairly clear why some of these teams don't have anyone. Take Wayzata, for example...I know I also said it was crazy that a program that deep doesn't have anyone, but their highest-scoring returning player had all of 9 points last year. Some teams (ex. Roseville) lost practically everything off last year's team, others (ex. Elk River, which actually has 2 skaters, Burnsville) are going to be talented but pretty young.

The Woodbury situation is definitely surprising; this year's senior class won the Bantam state championship a few years back. I know Jake Guentzel was on that team, but still. East Ridge has a pretty deep senior class, but no real standouts.

Another program you could add to this list is Andover--almost certainly a top-10 team this year, and their only rep is a goalie. Granted, the team's strength will be its depth, not its star power, but I expected at least one player to slip in.

I forgot about Andover......We could probably add a few more large metro schools to list that you would think (1) kid, JUST ONE, might squeak in...

I thought I would rearrange this. SO, STA has 9, (1) more than these other 23, and yes that was TWENTY THREE metro area schools combined. I do like most of the picks with STA, but come on......(again not counting goalies for now)

A couple years ago I brought up that STA had more selected than some high powered CONFERENCES with multiple ranked AA teams. The fact that they lost to a tiny town team the same year in the Tournament made it all the more absurd.

*Note to scouts- Stay away from the highly overrated STA players.

STsingleA makes a mockery of high school Hockey in this state.

Hi Bo,

First, the important stuff. How’s the fishin’ been up around Garrison this summer??

Jr. Gold, The high school Elite league, Minnesota tier 3 Jr. hockey.
Now …. A –AA. All because a hand full of power brokers refuse to have Tier 1 Midget minor and Major hockey in Minnesota. The Minnesota High School League in cahoots with Minnesota hockey are denying a few talented kids their opportunity to grow. The good News is that the 98’s,99’s, etc are all getting better and better because of summer AAA. And all the crying on this forum about kids leaving early, is of their own making. A kid I know well, played his whole Minnesota career On B and B1 teams in the winter, and fought his way playing
invite AAA in the summer.

For sure he was not happy being the last guy picked most of the time.. But a funny thing happened the summer of his 15th year. His body finally caught up with his natural ability to direct traffic. All of a sudden he is the go to guy on his high school team. Guess what ? He cannot wait to leave. In fact he will be playing in the NAHL in his JR. year..

A tip for anyone interested. If you have a kid that you think has special talent It’s up to you and your kid to
develop within your own summer program. The Association model will not get it done…

Look at the rosters of the High School elite Teams. Then compare the players points with the Senior varsity stats on the MN Hockey Hub. It’s a little bit of work, but… It will paint a clear picture.

Why not a bunch of Shattuck’s in the rest of Minnesota?

As you know, I used to get really angry about this subject.. Now I’m smiling a little !!

Amen, brother! and I'm sure there is no shortage of individuals pointing fingers at him and shocked he has no loyalty. Where was that loyalty 2-3-4 years ago when they smugly looked down their noses.

When my son was younger we used to call the winter the off season. Most development happens in the summer for a lot of athletes. And forget the "special talent". It's the best time to work on skills because that's way too young to know what the future holds for most kids.

Better yet take some time and find the links to the players on the league, amazing number of coaches kids, links to old programs, etc.. Not the best players which is part of the sytem yet sad...

Fishing in the Summer  ?? I only fish in the Winter now because of the fear of burning out.. Have you not learned from BadgerBob, and the others, that you need to take long periods of time off from your passions?

With 9 players in the Elite league...if the selection is truly merit based....they should go undefeated and out score their opponents by at least 150 goals. Even good AA schools seldom have 9 players considered ELITE.
