I believe if a parent didn't move with him he will have to sit out the first half of each sport for the 2005-2006 school year. I would think that if a parent moved with him, then ,he could play right away.

Since his parents did not move with him to East and they still live in the Eveleth-Gilbert district, he would not have to sit at all in the next season. He would be varisty eligible from day 1.

That might be some sweet justice against Randolph who recruited Boese to play at East.

I will try to make myself more clear on this transfer thing with Boese. I am assuming that his parents didn't move to Duluth and he lived with someone in that district and played a varsity sport at East.. The rule would be that he has used up his one free transfer and if he went back to Eveleth to play hockey he would have to sit out 1/2 of each sport he play for the entire school year.

So is Mark Johnson staying in Eveleth to coach or is he leaving and if so what schools is he getting offers from. Its hard to see him leave when he's got such great young team in Eveleth. These next few years should be the years to watch in Eveleth with players such as: Boese, and Florey in 9th grade, and Spragg ,Mausolf, Mariucci, Grivette all only in eighth.

Jake Boese isn't sure if he is going back to Eveleth or not but i know David Spragg most likely is. Eveleth also has like 7 or 8 sophmores returning

I am pretty sure that Coach Johnson will return for another year. Like I said before, he loves working with the kids that he has in his program so that is not a factor in any of this rumor stuff. He knows that he has some very solid young players that he can mold into his own players over the next few years.

I talked to him a few nights ago and he told me if he ever did move it would be for the sake of his family and nothing else. Something about not being able to recieve credit for getting his master's degree (I'm not a teacher, so I don't know how that works) and the cost of their health insurance is outrageous. Apparantly, in just about any other district, he could be could be making as much as $10K a year more than in EG because of that. I would agree that is definitely something that one has to look at when you have a young family.

About who has offered interviews, I do know that St. Cloud Cathedral offered and I believe River Falls, WI. There may be more, but those two, I know. I think Lakeville may have also but that is only rumor. He declined to interview for both.

For the players sake in Eveleth, I really hopes he stays there. As i watched last year, the team played with more heart and enthusiasm than I had seen before and with less talent than in some previous years. They were a very young team but he got them to work within the systems, work hard and improve as the year went on. Look at the SB games for example...two completely different games. If he left I really think that players would be very upset to see him go. They believe in him and what he is doing.

Like I have said before I really want Johnson to stay in Eveleth. He is one hell of a coach. To see what he did with that young team last year was amazing. No one thought that it would be possible to have a year like that but with a coach that actually cares for once people saw what happened. If the Eveleth community wants to see the program turned around from its down years then they need to keep Johnson there, someone who actually cares about the kids. Keep up the great work coach Johnson I know the people that matter are behind you.

Yeah im preety sure that spragg aint commin back. because im good friends with him and i talk to his mom and she said that he is goin to stay.
And i really dont think that boese is goin to come back because hes got a strong position at east and im sure he wont just leave it. but it would be better for him to go to eveleth because there goin to hane a strong team in this next season. they have alot of returning palyers for the next season.johnson has them in weight room like 3 times a week and ice time in superior like a couple of times a week.
So i really think that eveleth is goin to be having high expectations for them selves this year. I think that virginia and hibbing better watch out cause there going for the section title.
Good luck to eveleth this year and keep working hard all summer.

oldtime:

I think what these guys are trying to convey (and correct me if I'm wrong) but they see that for the first time in a long, long time there is someone in Eveleth who is taking charge of the program and putting in the work that it deserves. It sounds to me like the people who are close to program on here are very excited to finally see that. In my opinion, it looked like the EG program was on cruise control for the last 6 years or so and that the status quo was good enough. Now you have a young coach who has the drive and energy to do more and the players are responding to that.

From what I hear adn see on here, you have a large number of players who are taking time out to dedicate themselves to the program with driving down to Superior and skating and hitting the weightroom on a regular basis.

It's great to see a spark in Eveleth again.

I also heard last night the program put on a golf tourney that was the most successful ever as far as money raised and quality of the tourney (sixty some door prizes, a car for a hole-in-one, raffle items that were over $100 each, etc.)! Looks like a step in the right direction.

Good luck

Heres the scoop, Eveleth has the worst youth hockey prpgram around the Range, last year they had no bantam A team. Yes they did have 3 8th graders play HS hockey for them but maulsolf was the only one who played consistantly. Mariucci was nothing special b4 he broke his wrist and grivette played alot of JV and was solid but not ready for HS.

I would agree that Eveleth's youth program is in poor shape. It may still be ahead of Greenway though. I think what you see is many years of neglect of the youth program both by the city and by the high school staff showing its signs now. I think with what I have seen already out of the new staff, things will change, but slowly. I see a lot of dedication to the overall program from the new staff...something that was unheard of from the previous staff. I also think that there are some poor coaches within that program that are being protected from losing their jobs because who they are affiliated with. They are not in their position because they are the best qualified but simply they are friends with those who hire. The youth program is not being looked at with the players best interest in mind, instead the program is being used as a last ditch effort to keep some control of hockey by some. It really is ridiculous...I am glad I am in the middle of that mess.

True, they did not an bantam A team last year because I believe they had an influx of players trying to escape the coaching and competition level at the youth level and move up. The high school staff was handcuffed into taking a few players that should have stayed in bantams. I actually saw it as a good move to play B there. I think Virginia's A team won something like 1 game? And didn't they scrimmage Eveleth and lose?

I would rather see kids learn how to compete and win versus getting beat 15-1 at an A level just for the sake of playing A. Face it besides Hibbing and Rapids, the range youth teams do not compete well overall. The towns are getting smaller and therefore the talent base shrinks.

Smaller programs like Eveleth will struggle on and off. I remember back in 1982 they were somthing like 3-17. The following year they went 14-7 and beat teams like Duluth East 4-2 at the DECC, and toppled #1 Hibbing 5-4.
Eveleth's Bantam B's did fairly well last year, they were district runner- ups to Grand Rapids, and beat Roseau 2-1ot, Brainerd 6-0, but got thumped by Duluth East 5-3 and by Moorhead 5-1.
I agree with Royal 12, declining enrollment, and the lack of interest by the community is certainly downgrading the program.
I drove through Hibbing last year on a very cold weekend, and there were two rinks full of kids. that something i have not seen in Eveleth since the mid 90's.

Royal 12, You dont know much bout it. Virginias got a good youth program. Last year their bantam "A" team did only win 1 game, but at least didnt puss out at playin at the level. Not every game was a blowout either. They tied a very good team in Hermantown who did make it to the reional tournament. And ya they scrimmaged Virginias "A" and won 1-0 in a 10 minute lil scrimmage. Big deal We played wit 3 peewees on our team and we controlled the whole time. they made one rush and scored. The shots were 9-1 so u do the math and tell me who woulda won if we woulda played more than 10 minutes and wit referees and jus our team not peewees. And there was no damn contact.

how can you say they are a team to watch this year? they wont be competeing with anyone. virginia and hibbing will be the top 2. virginia should be the best team considering hibbings first line carried them the whole way last year. sure virginia lost niskanen, but the whole rest of the team did alot also. should easily light up eveleth like they did at the end of the year. 11-1 if i remember correctly? one the train gets movin, watch out

I've never met Johnson...I do remember playing for Coach Kochevar and watched Homala. To tell you the truth...last years team was overrated! The only reason the change of coaches was because of the 2 twins...by the way are they playing anywhere??? NO! Johnson should have done more to get them somewhere!
Most of those kids on last years team could not make many teams down in the cities.....any good ones anyway!

For one thing, Homola did not quit he got fired...He definately isn't the coach that people thought he was...like the saying goes great players don't always make good coaches and that was true with him. Johnson is going to be a way better coach then homola was. The team is going to be good this year, just everyone watch

They have a great schedule....they play all the sisters of the poor! If they can't beat Ely, Chisholm, MIB, Zim, Cotton..they should be in tier 3 this year with that schedule.
Hommala did bring home a championship!

hhhtoad:
Where did you see the Eveleth schedule...I know you were joking about the MIB Zim and Cotton but I don't think they play Ely or Chisholm this year...I've looked at the schedule and they are playing some more cities teams this year and I think that will help them...Where do you come up with Sisters of the Poor? That's a joke

And just to clear things up Homola didn't bring home a championship...The players did plain and simple.
