I am sure these are the same 2 ladies from Edina that I witnessed @ the X a couple of weeks ago. Right after winning (a close one in OT) against BSM on Friday night they are standing out in the concourse asking BSM fans as they are looking for the exits "Hey do you guys have any tickets for sale for the Championship game tomorrow night?" Yeah real class.......

Did anyone pay attention that I took this post from 2006 and the same towns getting mocked back then are still the ones everyone dislikes.
Except OTOWN clown who all the way from Disney in Orlando dislikes Woodbury..

If you could pull something back from 1973 you would get the same answer. My significant other (who lived there as a youth) claims everyone else is just jealous.

She's probably right Sorno...those who lived there are so far up their own butt that they would think that way. (jokingly of course)

Jancze, the reason people dislike Edina is mainly resentment of their success. Other reasons cited are the arrogance of those from Edina, which is an offshoot of their success.

People might hate the Yankees, nobody really hates the Royals and Brewers.

Folks will start to dislike Woodbury if they ever do anything. Which winning programs aren't disliked? NCAA basketball starts today and there sure are lots of people that don't like Duke. That wasn't the case 20 years ago.

A couple of things I find humorous:

After constantly talking about the superiority of the Edina Public Schools, my wife and her friends could not explain to me the historical significance of the term "cake eater" and why they may be referred to that on occasion.

My son's team played one of the Edina teams this year for the first time and it was obvious that my wife was cheering for the Edina team. When the youngster and his sister started to accuse her of this on the way home, she said "would you expect anything else other than Edina beating you?-it has always been that way."

You can take the girl out of Edina, but you cannot take Edina out of the girl.

I've always assumed, probably incorrectly, that it is a derivative of the "let them eat cake" comment meant to signify the disconnect between the proletariat and upper-crust. The United States has never had a formal caste system, but there are still 'haves' and 'have-nots'.

While people from Edina may 'have-not' a lot of tact, it certainly is one of the more affluent areas in Minnesota. Nothing like some parts around Lake Minnetonka, but until Equestrian becomes popular Edina will have to do as the flag-bearer as the state's villian because of their success in things like hockey, swimming, and girl's tennis.

Actually...for a little bit of Minneapolis history...

Washburn was originally known as the "Cake Eaters" back in the 50's and 60's. Back then, Eden Prairie, Bloomington, and many first ring suburbs - including Edina - were farmland.

The name was given to Washburn by the other schools in Minneapolis because of the elite status and attitudes of those that went to Washburn. It was a term coined from Marie Antoinette's, 'Let them eat cake.' Like Edina, the Washburn students were proud of the label "Cake Eaters" and played it up...nothing wrong with that.

In the 70's, when Edina started winning a lot of basketball and hockey championships and a lot of big houses were being built on farmland and in Indian Hills....combined with the demise of Washburn High School, as the well to do in Minneapolis began either moving out of the city or sending their kids to the Brecks, Blakes, etc....the name 'Cake Eater' got transfered to Edinans.

It is unclear in history when Washburn kids at Washburn hockey games chantied "We got spirit yes we do, we got spirt, how 'bout you?" if the Washburn kids of the 50/60's would pull money out of their wallets and chant "We got money, yes we do..." while waiving it at their opponents on the other side of the rink! Maybe someone from Washburn can chime in here?

Regardless...Edina is a quality community. In general, their parents are class acts (all of our associations have a few bad apples and I am sure Edina has their proportionate share) and their kids have to work just as hard as everyone else to achieve what they achieve....there are no free rides on the hockey rink for anyone.

Sorn, I didn't mention Marie A., but I do remember my mom telling me of her "Let them eat cake" comment. Problem is - and this is why you said supposedly - she didn't say it.

EDINA..hands down.everone hates them.they are all a bunch of cake eaters.there refs suck too.i was glad there highschoolteam got killed in the ship.

O-Town, I understand the history of the term cake eater and how it evolved from the apparent comment by Marie that was used to rally the peasants against the throne (a little spin doctoring 1700's style).

Being the most hated in anything usually stems from being successful over a long period of time, being financially well off, a bit arrogant, and a bit elitist. No one would dislike the hornet if they were no good, so success breeds resentment. After living in the Western Suburbs, I see how a lot of Outstate and smaller Twin Cites associations get pumped up to play you and put that extra effort in to beat you. Younger kids don't seam to understand the anger many of the adults and other players have for them, but they start to enjoy the challenge after awhile. This may breed some of the arrogance (or confidence) since adults get their kids all fired up to beat the "cake eaters", but almost always lose. Sometime confidence and arrogance get confused.

For me, I would much rather be hated for being the best than being the wannabe hater.

I was trying to understand how at the high school championship tourney all the Edina students got their sections so close to one another when the Hill-Murray fans were spread out all over the Xcel. Since then I have heard from both students and adults (upper deck) that the Edina kids demanded that the Hill fans and anyone else who was in their way move to other areas.

Those from Edina would call this success, those from anywhere else would call this arrogance.

i think that wadena's refs suck because they got two offsides goals on us when we were ahead to win the games. Their refs are homers.
