With all that has been said about these two teams, all not from the two schools need to understand the importance of these games. Beating the other is like winning state. When these two teams play, especially in basketball, all bets are off. For the most part in recent years, one school dominates most sports aside from basketball and now hockey.

This game has a lot of people interested and is a lot of fun but it doesnt mean squat.
The teams are in different conferences and different classes. WBL vs HM it aint.
Nobody's season is riding on it. No conference crown nor trip to state is at stake.
I was at the WBL/HM section final last year. I have no affilition with either school and I had butterflies. It was electric.
If you want that, you have to write a little letter and mail it to your local MSHSL. There are only 7 teams in section 2AA.

Well, I've posted it in probably three different places, all the AA teams that have opted up would win in class A every year, so if they do so through 2009 they have my vote to be the 8th team in section 2AA. Or I suppose even next year in that section. I wouldn't say St Thomas would be a huge contender for State in AA yet, but they would be a contender for 2AA for a long time. They already play three of the teams every year. I'm sure they could add the other teams to their schedule in replace of the 3A teams they play and it would be the more difficulty people have been complaining about. Packerboy, thanks for pointing that out. Honestly, I say go for it. Knowing the St Thomas community I don't think it would ever happen, but that would be cool.

HS, why would it never happen?

Well, I don't know the personal opinions of the people who could make the decision, but I will give a few examples. In the past 5 years the basketball program hasn't been very dominant, but before then, they were, but still AAA. The best example though is swimming:
6 of the last 7 state titles. The year they didn't win they got 3rd because a relay got disqualified for being off by a split second. Without that, they would've won. And for the most part, they dominate all of state, occasionally there is a AA team here and there (swimming has two classes) that can compete. If they were AA they probably would've gotten at least 5 of the titles the last 7 years, maybe more. They are completely dominant, and it's not a numbers thing, it is one of the best programs in the Midwest. But yet we are still in class A and not AA. Why you may ask? Having an Olympian come from our school and many D1 swimmers, state records and all-Americans year in and year out I would think that would be something to move us up to AA, but it isn't.
Although probably more than you ever wanted to know about swimming, if we started winning State every year and were just completely dominant, only losing occasionally to Hill and Tartan I think the chances are very slim. While moving up to 2AA would be cool, I think it is a very distant reality.

From the STA community

St. Thomas got owned the second game which was at Highland last year. It was not pretty. Hause played really well, and Don Lucia was there. Probably looking to recruit me and my dangles. hahahhaah

Wow, everyone knows they got owned the second game. One person misread it, big deal. Same thing won't happen this year.
Back to what we were talking about. Anyone else from St Thomas wanna back up, or tear down what I said about St Thomas opting up?

Get your tickets now I went to the arena today and there was a line a mile long at 4pm-6pm. O won't bet between these advance sales and the students and players able to buy as many as they want, your best bet right nowis probablly on Ebay.

This is gonna be a great matchup between two heavyweights from their respective classes. Throw in your plug and bring one for your buddy because it's gonna be a great night of hockey.

Here is the correct STA/Cretin ticket scenerio. There is no pre-sale of tickets to the general public. Tickets go on sale Saturday 12/23 at 12:30pm. Ticket prices will be $6 for adults and $4 for students. There will be 1,100 tickets sold and then it will be a sell-out. Plan on being there early to get a ticket and a good seat.

Thanks Arena Guy.
What would be your best guess as to how many will be left to the general public for sale on Sat?

I would estimate 800 tickets. Some have been sold to the STA & Cretin parents.

Thanks again. I appreciate the info. Good plan to take care of the hockey parents.
Last year there were player's parents who had to practically beg to get into Highland.

So there hasn't been any preselling to students at STA or CDH?
Wow, ticket sales open at 12:30, how many can each person buy? Could I go and buy 20 for me and friends, or how does that work?

There will be a limit for the # of tickets each person can purchase. This # has not been set yet, but is likely going to be 6 per person.

I know this is a STA/CDH thread, but that has died down. More will stir after the results of Thursday's STA/Tartan and CDH/Forest Lake games.
Until then, anyone else have anything to add to why St Thomas probably won't be opting up anytime soon.
Or opinions on them opting up to 2AA.
Thanks

STA just started to pick the program back up. With the new arena, the vanelli's coaching, and a solid last few years the program is on the rise. It won't move up after 2 years of going to state, and very likely this year. It still has to make a presence of a dominant program in class A. I'm thinking that if the program continues to stay in the top 5 or 10 teams of class A over the next few years and wins a couple more state championships that they migt move up. But it is too soon for this team to jump up to class AA. 3 years ago the team went from winning like 4 games in the season to being above .500 for the following year. The next year after that they were well above .500 and made it to state getting 4th place. Finally having a good season and playing very well in the tourney and taking state. It will take time if they are going to move up...
and CDH did play much better than STA when they played the second time at highland. STA had one of the PLEASE BAN ME games of the season and hause played one of his best games. The fact is CDH won the game, STA didn't, we'll see what happens Saturday.

That is what I've been saying all along. Like it or not, St Thomas use to suck. Really bad. People at the school barely even knew there was a team, unless you played of course. Now they got better. I think if Anders leaves with 4 state titles, then moving to 2AA would be great. St Thomas or Cretin could go to state, and not both, which would be an ultimate test. St Thomas could get rid of all their non-conference A games and play all the AA teams, the Gold Schwan Cup by then, and everything would be fine and dandy. But until that happens, they will continue to get better and play in class A.
Hopefully Tartan's game isn't canceled. That would be a nice warm up for Saturday, win or lose.
