I can let winning 20-1 go without a stink, honestly. I actually have a lot of respect for Luverne, what is going on there and the product they put on the ice, I truly enjoy seeing it as a fan of hockey in SW MN. What I can't let go is that Luverne's coach and faithful felt 'disrespected' by Redwood Falls pulling their goalie like they did, so much so that he had to write an e-mail to point out how disrespectful it was. Are you really so insecure to think that it was intended to slap you in the face? Come on, it's showing respect if anything by saying 'yup, you got us, we're notTONIGHT gonna beat you, but we're still gonna try to get better and if nothing else play hard.' I don't totally disagree with it, how often can you simulate playing with the goalie out, you can practice it but it's not the same. Whether you think that's genius or stupid you just may be right, but it's not disrespect. So what, he gave the boys a carrot and said play your sack off like you're down 1 and have to score. Go ahead, run the score up 20-1 on Worthington, but don't call out your peers on an issue of respect because they're trying to keep some passion alive. Luverne, quit being insecure, you are what you are and what will be will be, you've worked hard to get to where you are, Just enjoy the ride without being the loudest voice in the room. What comes around is all around.

who sent an email?

I personally never felt disrespected. I would say i felt ashamed for Redwood. I would say I could change my opinion after hearing your view point. At the time, It just appeared so foolish and half-baked.

Doesn't matter, I'm not taking this past matter of fact, and the fact that there was correspondence regarding the matter is enough. I've said my piece.

Thegoldenjet just unleashed another bombshell. So the Luverne Coach thinks it is respectful to put 20 goals on a struggling Worthington team but he emails Redwood they are disrespectful for trying to work on things in a game that actually might help in the long run?!?!?!?!?

The guy really needs to go he is hurting hockey in the area.

Feel bad for Redwood they are just trying to get better and build something. They don't need to be emailed and scolded by this clown. Please do Section 3A a favor and STEP DOWN.

notTONIGHT wrote:The evening before the High School season kicks off, I’d like to write a few words that can be cited throughout the season.

The Big South Conference is made up of 8 teams. IMO 4 of those teams can be classified as "Competitive." Those squads are New Ulm, LSPH, Marshall, and Luverne. Some of the games between the “competitive” teams will also be blowouts.

Every team in the conference is required to play each team two times. That occupies 14 games of the 25 allowed by the MSHSL. I find it absurd to believe that 7 games a season, a team should only play their top players one period, if that. If New Ulm jumps out to a 6 nothing lead against Fairmont in the first period, should they be forced to shut their top 2 lines down, knowing that this will happen SEVEN MORE TIMES THIS YEAR?! . That’s Fourteen Periods a season that their top guys are forced to watch. When you do the math that is just shy of 20% of the season. If you believe only playing 80% of your season at full speed is displaying respect for the game you love, you need to show yourself out of this forum.

The unfortunate truth is that the results of these blowouts are simply a product of decisions made by adults sitting on Association Boards. I hope these ugly results can prove to be a motivator for programs in the South that need to adjust their policies to better suit their programs.

Nothing would impress the state of hockey more than having one of the teams projected to struggle beat one of the teams projected to shine! Good luck to all of the Conference, and the rest of Section 3A!

Just a reminder....
doesn't mean your leading scorer needs to pump in the NINETEENTH GOAL halfway through the 3rd period...
Yeah, your right... the entire top 1/2 of the team should just sit on the bench until Sections.

There's TWO sides to the coin... Luverne's pretty solid and Worthington is not very good at all at the HS level. Hoping that changes... I don't know anyone who doesn't want that to change.

Then the 19th and 20th goal wouldn't of been such a big deal?!

MSHL it might really perk these games in the STATE of Hockey!!
Except then Luverne would score 30, if they tried for 51 minutes. What could the score of that game been if there was an intensity and effort from the Luverne side, thats whats scary....

Also, Cmon jonnyhawken, its been too long since you told us how much better you were then everyone...
OK Herb since you are trolling here I will bite. Just remember to practice catch and release ( and try to keep in mind I really am a fan of what Luverne is doing down there). While I disagree with having these top guys putting in goals late in a double digit route and agree with what someone said about running lines three and four only for at least the last period, Luverne was in a tough spot. Based on Hub report, line four had no goals and line three maybe a couple? Keep playing yes, but maybe 3+ passes before a shot or some of the ideas bender threw out would be more reasonable. That being said, based on the ratio of shots to goals, seems like pretty much everything was going in. That isn't Luverne's fault. What I DID think was nice (based again on Hub  ) was the multiple assists and NO GOALS from the Smedsrud kid. Nicely done. Make a nice pass and let someone else score in a game like that. Other than that I didn't see it so I can only infer that Luverne indeed could have put up double what they did in an all out attack. Pretty sure I didn't say much to offend but I will strap on the KEVLAR ANYWAY> Fire away.

I was at the game on Tuesday and it was tough to watch. I just wanted to point out that out of the 20 goals scored only 6 were from the top line. The late goal that came from Nelson was just after Luverne killed a penalty. Nelson was playing D on the PK and took a soft shot from the point that went in. It wasn't like he went end to end to score. It's tough to handle this situation correctly. You don't want to sit kids that only get 25 games a season and you don't want to disrespect the other team.

Hey Dad, you don't think the coach is going to be on the hot seat if he opts for greener pastures in Eagan? Good luck with that one!

Why would the luverne coach step down? He has completely turned the program around from a below .500 team, to a 20+ win team multiple seasons in a row. Pretty good resume.

it's the coach, the coach can make the good players even better. Do you really think that the coach in Hermantown is along for the ride, same for Edina, St. Thomas, etc.....? That's about as dumb as saying that Coach Brown should step down.

It's the entire hockey community in Luverne that has turned it around. From the youth level on up they made a decision to compete and now they are reaping the fruits of this labor. The head HS coach had a lot of influence on this decision and it is now paying off.

Instead of complaining about getting beat up maybe the other hockey communities in the SW should follow the example, build up the Mite ranks, go out and compete at an A level with their youth teams, and maybe it will pay off in a few years when those youth kids hit HS.

Edited to add: If you think this is a one off for Luverne and they are going to fall back I think you are wrong. They've got some good players in the system from Bantams on down to Mites. For full disclosure, I am not a Luverne guy but I have seen their youth teams play on many levels over the years. The recent HS success is only going to mean more kids turning to hockey as their primary sport too.

I'm not going to completely disagree, as I don't know anybody from Luverne (though I think Whiner is sweet on me), but I will remain a little skeptical. The only thing I've heard about the squirt A team so far this year is a 0-13 loss in a corn field tourney. Who knows, the whole team may have been sick that weekend. Still, it looks a little like STMA - enough parents of a group of kids within 3 or 4 years spend enough resources (not just money, but time, effort, expertise, etc.) and it pays off for that group, but the follow up groups either won't or can't invest as much, and it falls off again.

They have squirt kids up playing pee wees. The squirt team might not look strong this year based on results but the birth year, talent wise, is still good.

Since not going to respect opinions of others. That is the dumbest thing ever said! Let's be real Edina and St. Thomas have the best players go to their programs. Since do not know, breaking news the Twin Cities teams recruit.

After this group of players is gone and Luverne has a schedule with some competition then give coach credit.

Watch a good hockey team side by side with Luverne and you (if you're hockey literate) will conclude a few things..... Luverne has decent talent, but bad systems (which mostly shows up defensively, defense is all about grit and systems)... SO either the luverne kids are incredibly undisciplined or their coaching is off kilter.

As a HS coach, I'm assuming discipline is at least part of the issue but afer watching Luverne's Dzone against SPJ, systems are bad.... Leads me to believe coaching might be questionable.. I'll say it again, a team with as much alleged D1 talent as Luverne should be way more competitive... leads me to believe coachig is questionable.....But that is all speculation....
