Glad you are experiencing a good time. You must be one of his friends in his circle. Or shall I say his followers. We were completely misled by this coach. Yes, I know for a fact he breaks sticks, yells at the kids and benches kids if they make mistakes during games. Yet, we heard, oh, he never benches kids he is sooooo into development that's all the matters. Yet when they played the blades they sure wanted to win awful bad so he played one line for most of the game. Every game in every tournament is all about winning...make a mistake and your out. Unless you are part of his click you "ain't" gonna cut it on his team.

The experience you had doesn't seem to be the same that others have had.

Your explanation that he must be "one of his click" is pretty funny, are you new to hockey? That is a high school type of reasoning.

I don't know the guy as I have only a 98 player and it seems that there are plenty that feel they are getting instruction/development that suits their needs.

Yes we are new to hockey and we were misled in an unfortunate way and this guy will not get any praise from us and we will not recommend him to anyone. We now hear from many others in the hockey community to stay away from this guy. Too bad we didn't know from the beginning. If more people would recommened and tell the truth then newcomers to AAA hockey would benefit.

Most of the development is practice related, probably why some other country's don't play games until later years. Tournaments are there to go after and win - especially at the invite level - a big reason why teams are allowed to pick up "other" players?

Not sure what the issue is but if there is a coach out there to stay away from don't you think its good that parents know this? Yes, time flies and its all dribble but parents pay a lot of money for hockey and should expect certain things. This Probably isn't the best place to come for references so Exnorthstar, just ask around, you will hear who is good and who isn't and who to stay away from. Glad Monopoly won 2000 level. Good to see!

Don't kid yourself....let's make sure we are clear here. That was not the Monopoly team that won the 2000 level at Easton. That was a team called Monopoly that was filled with non-Monopoly players. This jumping from team to team stuff and constantly bringing kids in from outside the team simply to win a tournament is really kind of a joke. Filling a hole here and there when needed is one thing, but pick your team and stick with it.

Additionally, I have sat on the sidelines and simply read this board for the past several weeks to get a feel for what is going on in the AAA world. Some good stuff by some people that are well informed and/or simply have fair opinions. But I would like to respond to the handful of Roddy bashers out there that clearly either have an ax to grind or had some kind of bad experience in the past.

Unlike many of you that prefer to hide behind your screen name, I will tell you that I am an Icemen parent. I have also coached at all levels of youth hockey since many of you were children. Point...I am not "new" to this hockey/coaching world. As a result, we took great care in making a decision about our son this year and where he would play and who he would play for. He skated with the Machine, Blades, Easton, and Icemen over the past 12 months as we evaluated this entire landscape.

After much discussion amongst ourselves, the coaches, etc. we chose Roddy and the Icemen last Janaury. We had heard the good and bad about each organization and each coach...Roddy included....I.E. we did not go in blind to anything in the PAST. And although I hate to burst the bubble of some of the posters here that seem to have some kind of agenda regarding the coach we selected, our experience to this point could not have been any better. I have been at 95% of the practices and watched a coach that works the kids hard, expects focus, pulls kids aside to talk to them when they repeat mistakes (my kid included!), lightens things up and has fun with the kids, pats a kid on the back when he executes a drill properly (especially if it takes some work to get there), etc., etc., etc. As a matter of fact, I asked my son in the car the other day if he has enjoyed playing for Roddy. His answer..."yep". I said, "but tell me WHY you have enjoyed it". He said, "well, he is tough on me when I make the same mistakes over and over again, he pats me on the back when I do something right, and he's fun". I said, "you just told me all I needed to hear."

So again, not to burst the bubble of those that periodically want to bash our coach on a forum that quite certainly was meant for something other than that, but our experience has been outstanding. And as "TheJet" posted a few days ago...funny, but that same coach that you are bashing is conducting clinics in September to help the boys get ready for association tryouts and almost every kid on that team is attending. Seems odd if he is everything you say he is....

Cry me a river. I don't watch this forum as closely as you but I do talk to the community of coaches and parents and there is alot of things he has done that is ridiculous. Word of mouth is more effective than this stupid forum. As far as Monopoly, so what if they created a team to win? Grow up.

In other words, your kid got cut from those better teams and you had no choice but play for Roddy.

Nope. Actually he made the Machine practice squad which we were fine with at the time, made the Easton team and we declined, we chose not to pursue the Blades further, and my son ended up feeling most comfortable with the Icemen in the end. Was a good fit for him.

Anyway, wasn't interested in some major exchange about all this, just wanted to share our experiences to date. Do with the information what you please and keep in mind that my information is not "word of mouth from the hockey community or other coaches". It's from my own (and my son's) personal observations and experiences over many many practices and games. Likely a bit more credible than hearsay and a guy passing by at a Maple Grove practice or two.

Not hiding behind any name, only what I've heard about him. Don't even play at 2000 level, just know kids who do. Defensive aren't we? Everyone is entitled to an opinion you have yours, others have theirs.
