From the look of the first two games, Mayo is a lot better than last years team. They have the toughness, equal scoring, defense, and most importantly passion. Last year's team just looked like when they got down that was it they didn't even try to come back. Should be a .500 team this year and maybe pull off a few upsets a long the way.

It's shaping up to be an interesting week as Albert Lea has all 3 Rochester schools; at JM then home against Century and Mayo. Since the Big Nine went back to traditional scoring all these games count and should show a great deal. Century has AL and JM, Mayo has JM and AL. This isn't to disregard anyone else but this week should be very good at showing where at least these 4 teams are in relation to each other.

Through 2 weeks Mayo looks to be better than expected, Century is maybe a bit down more than expected and everyone else on par.

Just as a question, why is East so much smaller than West? They're 20% smaller with an enrollment of 806 compared to 1022. Is it demographics, design, or just chance?

Isn't there some kind of issue with more reduced/free lunches on the East side of town? One of my co-workers and I had this conversation awhile ago, and I think there is some peculiar way of adding free lunches to the enrollment numbers? Plus East, with an increase in that number, also unfortunately sees more kids drop out and no finish high school.

This year should be very interesting to say the least after looking at some of the scores thus far. I can't really get to much of a read on Century they lost big to White Bear Lake (11-0) and then White Bear Lake wins 4-3 over Hastings. I watched Hastings scrimmage Mayo in which it ended up 2-2. Mayo is going to be alot better than everybody thought they were going to be. It appears there first line is putting the puck in the net which was a problem with last years team. It doesn't look like they are giving up much as well. Mayo beat Irondale 5-3 last Thursday and J.M just lost to them over the weekend 6-4. West is putting up alot of goals as well but they have not played anybody yet. Albert Lea and Faribault look to be doing fine as well as they both beat norfield with similiar scores. Alot of parity this year. This week will tell alot . I see Austin was beaten by Luverne. What is going on over there.

itech22, I'm gonna tell New Prague and Winona you said West hasn't played anybody yet. Coach Lonke and McDevitt would like to talk to you . . .

Okay, Mayo does look good so far. Should be a big week for them with games against Albert Lea and JM. Still pretty early to get a good idea of who might win the Big Nine. I thought Century would be the pick before the season, but now it's hard to tell.

I was wondering about the Big Nine website too. If anybody hears anything, please post the info. Thx.

This site was loaded with great info, it doesn't look it has been updated at all this year. Someone was putting alot of work into it.

My best guess is the site administrator is no longer involved with hockey. It was kept up by Donny Nadeau from Winona since 2001 - 2010. He was an asst. coach for Winona during that time and looks like he possibly had his sons playing during that time period also. Andy (G) and Joey (F) who was a very good player for Winona. He is no longer listed as an asst. coach, probably why he may have decided to no longer do the website updates.

I know this has been brought up but what happened to Aaron Forgaard for Faribault? He had a great season in net for the Falcons last season, but yet he hasn't clocked in a minute in net for the Falcons this season, he's not on the roster for Faribault either? Anyone with any input?

You are correct. Coach Nadeau has retired and coaches decided to use Hockey Hub as scoring source from what I am being told. Too bad. Was a great site for all info on Big 9.

Hey Chalktalk: You asked does it hurt?? Well 13 goals given up the last two games against Irondale and Albert Lea. I would put a big YES!!!!!! on that question. This really could destroy what could have been a good year for JM. Sad to see. If there is a position player you cannot lose it is obvioulsly the goalie.

i think he's asking if king is hurt, not if it hurt to give up all those goals

Ok, he is not hurt and I will throw the extra information in that it will hurt the season as well.

I was asking if he was hurt. By your response I will believe that it is not an injury and it will hurt the team. Guessing that this is a season long asbence?

Why they aren't playing isn't any of my business and I don't care. However....

JM (King), Century (Sellnow), and Faribault (Forgaard) all had experianced goalies returning and none have played as of yet. Too bad for those teams as all are pretty good goalies, but it gives someone else a chance to step in.

I heard Forgaard was suspended for disciplinary reasons for a part of the season. I also heard that King was injured so hopefully he can get back in there soon. As for Sellnow haven't heard anything on that.
