There has been articles written on this in the Tribune and other papers nationwide.
It is a small, but growing trend for kids to be held back in say around 3rd or 4th grade. When a school district refuses, they just move to a private school.
That said, kids mature at different rates. I have seen kids shaving at 13 and some that never need a razor in high school.

It's more likely "kindergarten redshirting," when parents decide to delay enrollment for children with summer birthdays. Boys, in particular, are/were said to benefit. Wasn't at all unusual 15-20 years ago...particularly when there was a stay-at-home parent and not as much of a financial incentive to drop the full-time daycare.

There is a difference in being 18 all school year/season and turning 19 during the season. If a kid turns 19 during the season the reason for him being held back obviously can not be a summer birthday.

We're the birthday police now?
The MSHSL clearly only cares about players turning 20 during the season. There is even mention of 21 in there, although not totally sure how that could work.

I love Jimmy's game and I'm glad SCSU picked him up, but he's not a prototypical Mr. Hockey candidate.
I know the Huskies wanted Vannelli too, but the last time the Huskies and the Gophers each snagged a Skipper defenseman (the Gopher recruit was a Mr. Hockey candidate), I think SCSU got the better deal. I'm hoping the same may be true again, though it's certainly not a carbon copy scenario.

The main difference from last time is John Hill isn't doing the D recruiting for MN now. If that man got it right on a D recruit back then, it was more luck than anything else.
Guentzel is on a whole different level when it comes to identifying talent and recruiting elite D men.

Ha, I can't argue with that!
Although, Holl was a Mr. Hockey finalist and a 2nd round draft pick. Prochno was neither. Few would have imagined Prochno would be the better college player, so Gibbons clearly outperformed Hill on that decision.
This time around is clearly different, as both Guentzel and Gibbons pursued Vannelli. I certainly hope Schuldt ends up being a better college player, but considering how much Gibbons wanted Vannelli, it's not the same scenario as last time.

The book is far from being closed on Justin Holl - he's looked really good the past half dozen games or so at wing!

Never said it was, and he probably STILL has better pro potential. However, it's almost impossible to argue that he's been a better collegiate defenseman than Prochno to this point. You could guess that he'll be a better senior than Prochno will be as a junior, but it wouldn't be based on any logic or past history.

Prochno in my mind should have been Mr. Hockey that year. He was surrounded by many talented players but he was SO vital to their success. In the state tourney he scored both goals for tonka in the ship and scored 1 of the 2 goals in the 4OT game vs HM. Side note Prochno barley saw the bench in that marathon game and state championship. I felt like he kid was underrated and I'm happy he is continuing to have great success at the next level. Maybe a couple G's against the gophs this weekend

I think Mario Bianchi and Frankie Mork from Holy Angels should be serious considerations.
Bianchi just cracked the top 10 in the state for points with 4 games left in the season. Not to mention he has played the entire year with a fully torn ACL.
Mork leads the state in points for defense and could potentially make a run for top 10 in the state overall.
Forget about the team they play for and look at how these two really perform. Two of the best in the state IMO...

While their are others who could have been named to the list I believe it wouldn't change the winner. In my opinion I believe it is between Besse and Vanelli.

I will have to agree with you that Besse is the forerunner recipient of this award. What would have happened, if the Lettieri's, Faschings, Brodzinski, Gross and so on stayed back? Would it be a different picture? Obviously, you wouldn't see half the candidates names currently listed for the Mr. Hockey Award as finalists. Good luck to all
