They are seeding 5 this year. Pretty sure they are doing it in all sports that seed. Makes for "better" seeding, without hurting feelings 8)

I'm for any theory that puts Wayzata (or anyone else) first and takes the #1 target off Hill's back.

In 1987,Kennedy beat Burnsville twice in conference play, once at the Edina Holiday tournament, and in the state final. I don't any of those games being close; Kennedy was a machine that year.

OK, Eagan is down 3-0 midway thru the game. If Eagan falls out, what will the first five seeds then look like?

Burnsville did a tremendous job to even make it back to the final that year. They were down 3-1 to Warroad after the first period and came back to win the semi. But like you said they were overmatched by Kennedy.

Edit: What's interesting thus far is if Eagan goes down that 4 vs 5 at state might help Wayzata to avoid Edina, who has beaten them all three times apparently.

Some facts about Edina's seeding vs. Wayzata's:

Edina has won all three games.

Edina has outscored Wayzata 10-5.

Edina outshot Wayzata in every game by no fewer than 7 and by a grand total of 90-57 (shots don't tell the whole story, but that wide of a margin over an extended number of minutes can't be ignored).

Edina won both times at Wayzata and on the Trojans' larger sheet.

This is not a knock on Wayzata. It's THE team to be most admired in Class AA this season. But an objective assessment of 153 minutes of head-to-head hockey (102 of those minutes on the Trojans'
ice) says that Edina should clearly be seeded ahead of Wayzata.

Now, with Eastview knocking off Eagan, the book on seeding looks like this:

1 -- Hill
2 -- DE
3-- Edina
4 -- Wayzata
5 -- Centennial
6 -- Eastview
7 -- Moorhead
8 -- Lakeville

I know they will more than likely be an unseeded team (go Champlin!) but this is a team I would not want to meet at state. Their goalie had an amazing game tonight, their defense plays well, and their offense takes advantage of the opportunities they get.
They lost to Wayzata 3-1 early in the season. They have allowed more than 3 goals only 3 times this season; I wouldn't count them out of any game.

If all holds up it is looking to me like a DE/Wayzata final.

I'd agree with this at the moment. WBL would slip in as the #5 if they knock off Hill, while Champlin has no shot at being seeded, even if they beat Centennial.

Do you think they end up going straight seeds, even though it's a "random" draw?

If they do, I guess I wouldn't be shocked if they flipped Moorhead & Eastview simply because you'd have 2 northern teams playing in a quarterfinal. But then again, probably not fair to the #2 seed & if you did have East & Moorhead play, at least you're guaranteed a northern team in the semis. I guess if Wayzata (or Edina, but I don't think they have as good a case for 2) is the 2nd seed, it kind of will make any talk pointless.

Eastview's goalie is looking to make things a lot more interesting in a quarterfinal matchup, almost like last years Bitzer.

I like the look of the top five right now. The number 4 and 5 teams all of a sudden aren't as important, and it makes the second round potential match-up of Hill and Wayzata interesting. Of course the number 4 team has to win first.....could be like last year where none of the ranked teams made it through day one......

If it does go this way, and the top seeds to happen to be victorious on Thursday (easier said than done), we are looking at a pretty nice Friday night.

Duluth East vs. Edina (70-75% going for Duluth East)
Hill Murray vs. Wayzata (85-90% going for Wayzata) I like Wayzata better than Centennial, but Centennial wouldn't be an awful backup choice.

Friday nights are best when the villans are present; Edina & Hill Murray play the villan role well and the tournament is better when they're in the dance.

No "almost" about it from Eagan's perspective. #-o

Nice work. I figured somebody had done it before, but like I guessed, the times it has happened can probably be counted on one hand. And it subscribes to the formula: twice in conference play, once in a tournament & once in the playoffs/state.

Kennedy was a machine that year. I remember sitting at the 1991 Section V final between Kennedy & Jefferson, which the Eagles won. I was sitting next to a relative of a Jefferson player and he said that he was actually happy for Kennedy because they probably won't be going to the state tournament again for a long time after that year. The Jags began their run the next year, Kennedy started its decline, and he knew what he was talking about.

I would love to be at the AA seeding meeting on Saturday morning when the other 7 coaches tell Curt Giles that Wayzata is the number 3 seed. "Sorry Curt, we just don't think your three wins over Wayzata is enough to seed your team above them"

This topic has explored the many and varied ways one can parse a team's record to justify a particular seeding. The one factor that should carry the most weight is head-to-head record. Hard to debate. Edina won ALL THREE games they played against Wayzata. 'Nuff Said

Quit giving me your case about head to head meeting between Edina and Wayzata. Look at the head to head meeting between Hill/Wayzata and East/Wayzata. Wayzata doesn't deserve to be in front of Edina. They deserve to be in front of Hill and East...they beat them both...maybe Edina should be one and Wayzata 2......ok with that

Well, this COULD have some merit. Wayzata beat both East and H-M. Edina beat Wayzata. Edina hasn't played East or H-M, right? Hmmmm.....

Lost to East 4-1 in the consolation semis of the Schwan Cup (insert "nobody gave a sh!t" card HERE *PLEASE NOTE SARCASIM*) & lost in OT to HM.

I do think that 3 wins does weigh heavily though...If East & Edina played 3 times, I doubt either would beat the other 3 of 3. Same with HM & Edina. Probably a 2-1 or 1-2 outcome.

Meh, those don't really count anyway. I mean, it was just a consolation bracket and since the other was OT it's essentially a tie. Those can be overlooked, right?!

My prediction

QF game 1: #2 Duluth East vs. Eastview
QF game 2: #3 Edina vs. Moorhead
QF game 3: #1 Hill Murray vs. Lakeville North
QF game 4: #4 Wayzata vs. #5 Centennial

The MSHSL will not have an all northern QF game.

Unlike last year, the top seeds will all win their QF games this year.
