Should the Baudette Bay Hockey Classic be done again and be an annual thing? What do u think?

Although the teams weren't top notch the game was awesome. It should be an annual thing with fundraising year around.

The game was a good idea in theory, but in my opinion for it to take hold and go on for years to come, it has to involve better teams. Obviously that would probably involve moving to a different sight, but hey, i believe there is another team on the same lake that is usually pretty good. How about an annual Warroad v Roseau game on the lake? Think that would generate some attention?

I obviously have a bias, so I would hope they keep the teams as/is if they do it again. There's something to be said for the big city kids (and Johnson is still the most respectable of the big city schools) vs. the small town club. Kind of a "Hoosiers" type of thing.

Having said that, I guess I can't really argue the idea of getting better clubs involved, but I think that since LOW had the grapefruits to actually give the thing a shot, they've earned the right to make it their tradition. Anyplace else wouldn't be right. Maybe a different opponent.

i totally see your point, and i like the big city versus the sticks angle. I hesitated to make the last post because it is a very unrealistic idea, but i figured i'd throw it out there for discussion anyway. I like the idea of Johnson coming up every year, the downfall is with LOW. This was their last year to be somewhat competitive, it looks to be down for a while after this.

Why couldn't they do a double or tripleheader on that day. LOW and Johnson are Adam and Eve they could play everyear, now bring in two or four more schools and make a day of it.

FSN could have "hockey day in mn" all in one venue...

Why not turn it into a tourny? Sticks vs City take some of the teams not playing in the schwans cup and what not invite them up and have an 8 team tourny over 3 days or something...... 4 city vs 4 northern

Not a bad idea, it might be hard to get teams that would be equal ability levels though. l

3 Games cities vs. the far north

1st game
Johnson vs. LOW

2nd
St. Thomas vs. Warroad

3rd
Edina vs. Roseau

The host game, followed by two A powerhouses, then two AA powerhouses. FSN and the community of Baudette could make some big cash. Hockey fans of the north would have a hay day. I love the idea.

Why does it have to be better teams? Don't they get enough press? Why not make it some of the lower ranked teams, I think they would be more willing to make the trip anyways. Give some teams a better memory then getting thier butts kicked by AHA or whoever is the powerhouse at the time. I know the East Side (Johnson) fans were really excited for this. Thier Bantam team was pumped to play the same weekend up there.

#1 = North vs South, make it the northern most team (LOW) vs the southern most team like Albert Lea.

#2 = Invite a team from North Dakota, Wisconsin and another Mn school and have a little tourney.

Might be tough to do with the weather. If weather/conditions wacks one game off the schedule, not a big deal. But to lose three would be bad.

I suppose it could move indoors to get the games in though.

I like the idea of a tournament. That would be so sweet to have it with the hosts, and then the Class A and AA powerhouses. Now that would be perfect. I mean Baudette is not doing the greatest as a community and this event would help them out A LOT! Lots of income flowing through the community

Do we know that for a fact? I'm curious if anybody knows what LOW/Baudette cleared for that event. If it cost them $30k up front, I can't imagine their take was all that spectacular.

Of course, now that they've put that kind of money into the event (boards, setup, etc.) I would imagine it would be less expensive to run in the future, wouldn't it?

I think the tourney is a great idea
I also like the idea of some lesser known teams, and the LOW and 3 from the North and 4 from the cities or South idea.
Would there be enough accomadations for all the teams and families etc.?

Make it a combination hockey and team fishing competition with the winners posted on a permanent sign as you enter town for bragging rights.

There are more than enough accomodations. If not for resorts, Baudette would be nothing more than Pitt.

Because better teams get a bigger draw, which equals more money for the host team/town. I would rather watch two powerhouses slug it out than two middle of the road teams anyway.

i think they should play a whole day of games. All day in differnt locations a over mn. Like start the day with a game up-north. Then have a game outside in southeatern mn. Then outside in the cities. Etc.

Not a bad idea but like it was said eariler, it cost around 30 grand for Baudette to put up that rink. Not a lot of towns have that kind of extra money just laying around, that's why it makes more sense to play all the games at one venue and get the most use out of a very expensive set up.

I have been to the town many times. It used to be a bit more lively. But now days it has went down in the dumps, just as the hockey is going down. As SB said all they have left is the resorts around the area, that is the only thing really keeping them alive.

Definately have this event again. I don't think the quality of the teams matter. (within reason) I think you could have Lake of the Woods versus anybody (as long as the game is somewhat competitive) and it would have attracted attention because it was a unique idea. I know it got my attention, I watched it on FSN and I live in the cities and have no affiliation with either team, other than being a hockey fan. My parents went to the game and they do not live in Baudette, sure they have a place on Lake of the Woods, but they took time from catching Walleyes to go watch the game. Great idea, I hope to see it again, I would probably even go up their for the weekend, check out the game and catch walleyes..sounds like a good weekend to me!

I belive the boards they used for the classic on the bay are going to be set up in some park within the city this summer. Therefore to do it again next year they would have to find another set of boards and do the whole thing over again. So to answer the question would it be cheaper in the years to come...i would lean towards no. Granted i'm no financial wiz kid nor do I have any knowledge to what the leaders of baudette think. thats just my take on it.

The boards might not go up in the park this year they might use them again or thats wat ive heard.

I hope they do it again, and with the same two teams (unless a tournament/double or triple-header could be worked out). I agree with the points a lot of you have been making regarding the "need" for higher-ranked teams. I totally think that this was great exposure for Johnson and LOW, and hopefully they keep these two involved. It's about the game of hockey, not about greed.
