Red Wing @ St Thomas 3-1-07 3A Final

These two teams met earlier in the season and it was a close one said to be a bad game for both teams ending in a 2-1 W for the Cadets. The Cadets have 0 GA thus far in sections and they'd love to keep that up for their hopeful trip to state, while I'm sure the whole state outside of Mendota Heights would love to see the Wingers upset the private school and advance to state.

If anyone in 3A can do it, it is Red Wing. They seem to have STA's number...even though they always lose anyway.

Three years ago Red Wing won in the section. This is how their last 4 meetings have gone:

04 sec: 4-3 Red Wing
05 sec: didn't meet; Red Wing lost to Lourdes
05-06: tie at Red Wing
sec 06: 4-2 St Thomas
06-07: 2-1 St Thomas home

Did RW get outplayed and sneek into this game? Or were they more talented than Lourdes in the 3-2 win?

I believe momentum is a huge key to a teams sucess come playoffs, so the answers to these questions could say a lot about what will happen come D-day.

On a side note, that had to be a bitter loss for the Eagles tonight since this is the last year they will be in Section 3A.

How in the hell did red wing beat lourdes?

Because RW was the 3 seed and Lourdes was the 2 seed. It was a minor upset, but its not a shocking one.

Well, they scored 3 goals while Lourdes only scored 2...

Well no PLEASE BAN ME that they scored more. Bce i talked to a lourdes player last night at the mayo/century game and they said red wing wasnt going to be that bug of a challenge but i guess thats what u get when u'r cocky.

So a player for Lourdes said about the team that they tied this season and lost to in sections last year said RW wouldn't be a challenge?

Red Wing got severely outplayed in the first, but they hung around and eventually wore out lourdes. both teams were completely gassed at the end of the game. but if momentum you say has a huge role in playoffs I can't see how the wingers could possibly get any more momentum out of a game. They were really jacked up to win.

STA - 3
RW - 0

St Thomas being the only team to make it to state with no GA in sections 8)

Couldnt have said it better myself. RW got totally handled in the first. The only Winger that showed up to play the first was Droogsma. But whatever Nem said must have kickstarted something. They wore the Eagles down, and the goals came.

Oh, and RL #4.. what ya think now?! Thought so.

I think the final will be close.. probably too close for STA's comfort.

There's no way STA gets to state without a GA or two. I'll take two

STA - 4
Red Wing - 2

This will be tough for Red Wing. STA was totally in control tonight, a hat trick for the Walter kid, and Richfield never seriously threatened.

Red Wing was lucky to only be down 1-0 after the 1st (although Lourdes' goal came after a missed offsides), and seemed to find their legs in the 2nd...1-1 after two periods, 2-1 Lourdes with about 10 minutes left, then the sophomore for Red Wing - I think it's Schammell - scored to tie, then got the winner with 2:50 left. Red Wing took a penalty with 2:15 to go and had to kill that off.

They were pretty even teams, and if LP is right and Lourdes was looking past this game, they were very mistaken.

Red Wing has been outshot in both their playoff games, total of 46-32, I think, but won 3-1 and 3-2.

Because they have solid D. &Schammel's first goal was amazing.. huge dangle.

Lourdes picked the wrong game to 'overlook.'

The real question is what is going to happen to the RW kids that broke the plexi out of the supports when they were rocking the glass after the go ahead goal? Boy did the principal swoop down on them fast, lol.

Schammel and Droogsma kicked ass tonight, and the STA game will be a real battle.

When is STA gonna grow up and play in the BIG DOG sections??
Gotta go with STA by a half dozen!

Basically Lourdes players took some dumb penalties, shortened the game for RW (playing 5 on 4), didn't finish when they had the chance. RW's goalie played well and Shammel did the job when he had the chance. I thought RL was outcoached as well, given that RL was the more talented team. RL players like to hang on the puck instead of passing it. RL's goalie was not very strong either - gave up too many rebounds and scrambles around the net.

STA looked ok in their win against Richfield, but they are definately not the same caliber as their team last year and are beatable.

This statement makes no sense. Of course if anyone is going to beat STA it will be RW. They are the only team left in Section 3A.....

I just read that the student section knocked the glass out of the supports during the game, that sucks. At our arena kids get so pissed off at us because we constantly pull kids from the glass. This is the reason why. Does anyone out there know how muxh one piece of glass costs, besides the time it will take to clean it up. If you have ever been at Richfield, you know that the stands are about 3 and a half feet above the ice. If this were to happen at Richfield, not only would the glass break and fall on the ice but the kids hanging will fall on the ice also. The someone gets hurt and the lawsuits start. My advice is this, STAY OFF THE GLASS!!! DON'T GET PISSED AT THE ARENA PEOPLE WHEN THEY REMOVE YOU.

I agree with you. They are better....... Every team is beatable. Your insight is flawed without facts explaining why they are less a team.

Very good advice. It's so true. People trying to enforce things are a-holes until you do something stupid then your response is "well, why didn't someone pull me off the glass?!"

Just curious. You see at plenty of games at the X, and probably other venues, people pushing up against the glass from both sides after goals and wins and this kind of a thing never (usually) happens. What does it take to break on of those?

It was just a bad game in general. lourdes shouldve won easily. They had an important player sick, and there first line wasnt working well at all.

How was the first goal due to a missed offsides? It sure looked on/good to me. I agree that Redwing seriously got outplayed in the first half of the game and it was kind of sloppy throughout most. I do think that if Redwing can hold on close to Saint Thomas for two periods like Richfield did, anything can happen.
