Twins (11-9) vs. Royals (7-13)

Twins are 1-2 vs. Royals this season.

Twins are 2-5 in AL Central play.

Game 1, Wednesday, 7:10 PM

Sidney Ponson, RHP, (1-2) 9.39 ERA vs. Odalis Perez, LHP, (1-2) 8.64 ERA

Game 2, Thursday, 12:10 PM

Boof Bonser, RHP, (0-1) 6.53 ERA vs. Zack Greinke, RHP, (1-2) 4.82 ERA

This could get ugly...

The way things are going right now it could be a sweep for the Royals. Pontoon actually lowered his ERA with last night's performance. Apparently the Royals pen had been awful prior to last night but our plucky hitters (and baserunners) bailed them out. By the numbers it looks like Cuddyer had a rough game, 0-4 with 3 LOB. Morneau seems to be in a rut the last four games after a good run that had his average up to .313. He hasn't hit a home run in two weeks though.

Hunter had a nice game, he has a 12 game hitting streak going right now. And some might say the Twins got some more good news when Rondell White heard something pop in his leg during yesterday's workout and is being reevaluated.

And they go into Detroit this weekend. One of the low points of last year was watching the NFL draft with some friends and periodically looking over at the Twins game. The Tigers score was going up faster than the price of gas, every time we looked they had a few more runs.

Pathetic hitting.

Here are the numbers.

From the 5th inning on the Twins hit into 11 outs. The four other outs consisted of a K, Pickoff, and two force outs via the double play ball.

Of the 11 outs the Twins hit into, only twice did the batter have two strikes. You know what that means? The Twins are swinging at hittable pitches and doing nothing with them. My conclusion is... they can't hit, well one guy can and the Royals smartly took the bat out of his hands twice with a man in scoring position.

In the bottom of the 8th, with two men on, the 1-1 pitch to Cuddyer was a chubby, low 90's fastball down the middle of the plate and all he could do was foul it off. Cuddyer goes on to SO and Casilla gets picked but the mistake that Cuddyer didn't do anything with was the ball game. Hafner, Dye, Konerko, Sheffield, Monroe, Mauer, Thome, Blake and Pudge all put that in play w/o outs being recorded.

Ted Williams wrote a book about hittting that could be condensed into one sentence: Get a good pitch to hit and drive it some where hard.

When that pitch will come in your at bat is hard to say. It might be the first pitch, it might be the fifth. You may not get one until the next at bat.

But you will get one. Sweeny got one..2 run homer. DeJesus got one....gone.

Hunter jumped on a couple. The guy you all want to bunt is about the only life this team has right now offensively.

But everybody else is getting pitches to hit and doing nothing with them, espescially with men on base. The result wil be a lot of losses.

Ponson had a perfect 5th starter outing last night. The hitters kicked it away .....again.

Gotta say I agree with you on this one PB. Cuddyer not only had the BP fastball but also a hanging slider in that at bat that he also fouled off. Cuddyer is a # 6 type hitter and we have him hitting cleanup between the reigning batting champ and the reigning MVP. He should be getting the best pitches of anybody in the AL.

Here are some ideas to think about.
Trade Baker and Castillo and maybe L-Rod to somebody to get a right handed 3B, or LF guy that can DH with some power to bat clean up. (Cirillo is not the answer to this one.) I have said before I like Adrian Beltre in that role.

Punto is the utility guy or stay at third depending on the trade.

Kubel and Tyner can play LF or bring up Spahn and let him learn from Hunter on a day to day basis. (Rondell White doesn't bother me out there either)

I say let the pitching work itself out. Look at the starters on June 1 and make some adjustments if necessary.

The Twins are a NL team playing against AL teams. The problem is everybody else gets to have a DH except us.

You make good suggestions Champ but its as simple as getting a DH in here.

When was the last time they actually had one? Chili Davis?

Leave Punto at 3b and put anybody you want in LF. Just get us a DH.

The Twins need to bump up the payroll by 25 million.

I'm tired of hearing about how the Bill Muellers of the world are too expensive to sign as free agents.

I don't expect them to sign someone every year, but once every 5 years isn't asking a lot.

There were two concerns about this team coming into the year, 3B and LF. They addressed neither and right now those positions are killing them at the dish.

I have heard how people want Slowey up with the Twins. How has Garza been doing? I think he should have the first option to replace a starter.

Punto caught stealing in the bottom of the 1st. Though he was out, I like the sense of urgency to get a guy in scoring position early. Keep running, keep bunting.

0-0 middle of the second. Bonser gets the K with two on and two out.

Tyner comes into run for Hunter after he is hit by a pitch.

Give me the suicide squeeze with Casilla batting and Tyner at third.

What do you got to lose? Force the action.

Oh, let's just wait around for him to hit into a double play.

Slowey is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA

Garza is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA

How can Garza or Slowey cure what ills the Twins?

Poor Boof, he keeps hanging zeros and gets nothing.

He'll give up one or two around the 6th and be in line for a loss.

Not saying they would cure anything. I just forsee needing another starter soon. I already stated my plan for the bats.

Bottom of five: Two on, nobody out, how will they screw this one up?

Can't get the bunt down. Mauer gets walked basees loaded two outs and Cudyer hits a fly ball to center, inning over. Is that about right?

I don't see Mauer getting to swing with first base open the rest of the season. The only RBI's he'll get is if he decides to hit himself in.

So Torii got drilled in the mush? Not good.

Morneau wasn't the same the remainder of the season after he got hit in '05... Kirby wasn't exactly the same either.

That's a hell of a way for his hitting streak to come to an end.
