What's JQ hockey public opinion on these camps? Was told it is a fundraiser for coaches and essentially a baby sitter hockey camp? My son will be a 1st year Squirt...so I am interested...

Might depend on who's involved with coaching/helping in your area, but my kids have gotten a lot out of the "youth" STP clinics in GR.

Depends on what is available in your area. I would suggest, if you don't know ask questions. Some STP programs are good. Some are not so good. People in your association and other good hockey people can help you with an informed decision.

STP can be a very valuable summer program. The majority of the programs offer both on and off ice training and instruction. In GR, Guy Clairmont started the program several years ago, and each year it's gotten better. He brings in quality instructors for the sessions and the players get a chance to develop skills and strengths for the upcoming season. In GR, the mite and squirt level don't offer dryland training, but the pee wee and bantam level do. The high school level is being instructed by the GR high school coaches and the bantam A coach, Trent Klatt. All in all, if you compare the $ you would spend at a week long camp somewhere, you're more than getting your money's worth with an STP program that lasts several weeks at half the cost. STP is a great program. I'm more than willing to send both my high school player and my mite. Very well worth it.

For guys hockey, yes. For girls hockey, it seems to be more effective to work in smaller groups, and more off-ice. That is just what I gather from my experiences. I don't know why, it just seems to be that way.

After participating in the GR STP program for years now, I can certainly say that it is a very valuable training tool. It's especially valuable when the directors get players such as Alex Goligoski, Grant Clafton, or Trent Klatt to come help out. Their experience is a very valuable tool.

This completely depends on who is running it. Some coaches put their hearts and souls into their work while others view the STP as a way to squeeze money out of parents while they sit on their asses and run cone drills from Flexcoach. I'd ask people in your community who have participated in years past.
