Max Tardy will be a junior at Duluth East High School this fall and says he had no timetable for choosing a college.
Then he talked to Minnesota Duluth.
Tardy, 16, gave an oral commitment to the UMD men’s hockey program last Friday and expects to be on campus for the 2009-10 school year.
“Because I grew up in Duluth, UMD was my first choice,’’ Tardy said Wednesday. “When UMD’s coaches said how much they wanted me on their team, it didn’t take much thought. I knew this was the place for me.’’
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound center played his first varsity high school season in 2006-07, recording 12 goals and 12 assists for24 points in 27 games for East, which was 18-7-2 and lost in the Section 7AA semifinals to Grand Rapids in overtime.
“Max came to us from bantams, and there was never a question about his ability to handle the puck. He was on our top power play from the start,’’ East coach Mike Randolph said. “He has a real feel for the game and will be our top center this season.’’
An older brother, Weston Tardy, played four seasons in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association as a defenseman for Colorado College through 2005-06. The Tigers were 105-48-13 in that span.
Weston Tardy played for Augusta (Ga.) last season in the East Coast Hockey League and will be with the Nybro Vikings in Sweden in 2007-08.
“My brother emphasized playing in the WCHA, but said the main thing was just to be sure about the school I picked,’’ said Max Tardy, who has a 3.6 grade-point average. “Making my choice now takes some pressure off, but you also have to keep working hard because there will be big expectations the next two years.’’
He’ll take part in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League this fall with Tradition Team North before the high school season.
Previous UMD commitments for 2009-10 were centers Jack Connolly of Duluth Marshall and John O’Neill of Anoka, Minn. Tardy said he did not seriously talk with any other colleges.
