Team Minnesota is again registered at the annual Chowder Cup tournament in Mass. Here is the roster for this year’s squad:

In years past Team MN has been very competitive. I believe they made it to the simis last year. They are struggling a bit this year going 0-2 with losses to the Burlington Cougers (10-4) and ROMF -basically a team of Ohio players- (6-4). One more game against a decent NJ Titans team. Doesn’t look like they will advance this year.

Looks like they took people who anted up the money to go. Skill was not the main ingredient here.

This is actually not a surprise - that skill was not the main ingredient here. After the NCAA enacted the recruiting mortitorium that did not allow Division I coaches to watch kids from August 4th to August 19th, the Chowder Cup was not going to attract anyone other than the kid and parent/families who were looking at the event as 1) a vacation and 2) a chance to look at schools on the east coast - unofficially.

From the US Hockey Report - May 14, 2007

After years of talk, a college hockey recruiting calendar was voted on and passed at the coaches convention in Florida. The vote was driven by a desire to protect college coaches from being on the road virtually – literally, actually – every single weekend of the year.

The vote, effective immediately, would keep Div. I coaches out of the rinks from May 15-31 and again from August 4-19. The May dead period would encompass two weekends while the August period would encompass the first three weekends of the month.

The proposal was put forth for vote by the WCHA and passed, 40-2. Only the University of Maine and Holy Cross voted against it.
