Around 40 to fill 20 spots. I think tryouts start this weekend depending on the area.

The usuall waiting area dribble. Expensive Lack of Coaching Quaity of the players is inconsistent. Reffing is Bad Alot of hacks. Have no idea if ythey are realistic or not But if anyone has some real info please share.

The level of hockey last year was good. The reffing was inconsistent, but the same can be said for just about any reffing since the New Std of Play was instituted. The coaching was decent. I would say it was exactly as advertised... if you haven't done it, I would recommend that you try it.

I played in this league last year. It has its pros and cons. I would recommend playing in it if you don't have any other hockey during the week or you're playing a fall sport, but if you are skating everyday in some program it's not worth the travel and money. There is a lot of hacking. Looking back on it, I would have rather lessened my risk of getting hurt and just trained in the fall.

As for the try-outs, there are usually 50 kids for like 20 spots. Although there are a lot of kids there because of a parents recommendation. So it's more like 30 kids for 20 spots.

The young goalie from Duluth East didn't play well all tryouts, but happen to make the team... But with all of the evaluaters from DE it wasn't much of a surprise he made it.

There was good talent all around. Jamnick from Hibbing was far and away the best forward there. Not sure of the name, (he wore #2 for the tryouts)but he was from Marshall and pretty impressive. Not a very big kid, but very strong. He made several big hits and played good hockey. Should be a fun team to watch.

So GR3343,
What you are saying this is not a bunch of hacks and could turn into a good program for Sophmores / Juniors and worth trying out to be on a team?

I thought the Rapids goalie sucked not the East goalie

With the team only being able to suit one SR goalie per weekend, the East kid has the advantage of playing every weekend... ( Tracy & Tabaka are both seniors ). How convienant for the East coaches who picked the team.

I have to agree with this. Jamnick is a solid player. The DM kid (Harris) was dished out a couple crushing hits and it was regardless of their size. Also, I was impressed with the Duluth East kid that wore #16. I'm guessing that was Renier? The DC goalie played well too.

#2 from Marshall is Trent Harris he is a very skilled player and should put up some points.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Didn't appear to be any hacks in the group I watched this past weekend. As far as the league itself, I wouldn't know yet, I've yet to see a game, but I'm guessing all the other sections have talented juniors and sophomores as well which should make for some entertaining hockey for the fan - and good competition for the players.

Sounds like sour grapes. In most people's opinion(including the evaluators)Tabaka was the most solid tender at the tryout. Which, I'm only guessing here, is why he made the team. Leave it alone and don't start the putdowns and player bashing. The kids who were out there competed hard for their spots. Whether they're from East or Rapids, most of them deserved what they got.

Tabaka played well all weekend...

Thanks, I might have to go watch, and Cheer on Sect. 7 since I live down here and it sometimes is hard to see good classic northern hockey down here at times. I take it that none of the kids that are on this team play any Fall sports?

I think the league has planned all the games/practices for weekends so that the kids can still do their fall sports if they choose to. My son plays football and there isn't any times that should conflict.

Tabaka is a solid tender. I am not surprised at all that he played well.
