Duluth Heritage Sports Center

I was out there a few hours ago and snapped some pics so you can see the construction progress. I would say that chances of having this site ready in time for this coming hockey season are nil.

I agree... I drove by there on Fri. and it still looks like they are in the demolition stages. Should be nice when they get it done though.

I agree, it doesn't look good, but then again if they are contracting Jehova's Witnesses to do the work, it could be done early next week.

I've seen them raise a Kingdom Hall in less time than it takes for 1AA to find the consolation bracket.

Wow...I was looking at the pics and thought I got redirected to middle east coverage

What is the cost of the new center? and what will it's capacity be?

is it a single sheet or 2 or what?

The initial Heritage Arena will have a capacity of 1,500. Later on, a second sheet at the Heritage Pavillion will be built. No idea what the capacity of that will be.

Total cost will be roughly $15.6 million.

9/23 update

Grabbed the camera this morning and headed over to see how things were progressing. Earlier images showing nothing but rubble have been replaced with this:

There's still a lot of rubble on the site from demolition but the arena part is starting to take shape. A lot ways to go but at least something is finally happening.

I honestly don't know, but it seems like 1,500 seats may not be enough for high school games up there. Is it? Will they still use the DECC for games against Cloquet & GR & the like?

It will be for the vast majority of high school games, including probably the 7AA quarterfinals. Regular season games between East and Cloquet would possibly need to be at tDECC, altho I rather like the idea of a packed house at the new rink. It'd feel like the Lumberdome. Not sure about East vs. Rapids. 7AA semis and finals? Not a chance they could be at Heritage.

The latest I heard was opening in January.

Yeah, how's this thing coming. I live in the Duluth area and I'm hoping this rink get open soon so I don't have to ref in Freezeburger as much.

I haven't had the chance to get out there in the past week or so. New camera (a tiny P&S I can tuck into my pocket and take everywhere) is coming today so that'll be a good opportunity to try it out. :)

Not much to report lately. Work continues but it's hard to tell from looking at the outside how soon it'll be ready to go. Certainly not before New Years. The last time I was there, I was trying to figure out a way to get inside the place when nobody else was there. It should be possible, as the site isn't fenced in or anything and security seems pretty lax. My neighbor works for KBJR-TV, maybe he can secure a press pass of some kind for me.

You guys are good for my bail if I get busted there, right? Right? :)

I'll try to get over there and take a few pictures tomorrow, work permitting.

Is there an alternative plan in place for all the games that are supposed to be played there in the next couple months, does anyone know?

Sure. tDECC hasn't been imploded yet. There's also Pioneer Hall.

The Duluth Schools double booked most of those games at both the Heritage Center and the DECC. So, the games will go on.
