Best team since 2000

04 Centennial

The only team to win both the Schwans title and the State Tourney in the same year. Even though they were banged up and without Ryan Flynn (injury) they shut out three top 5 teams in successive nights in the state tourney.

I'm not sure where they all ended up, but here are some of the former Cougars.

Greg Flynn D Air Force NCAA tourney last year
RJ Anderson D Minnesota NCAA tourney last year
Tom Gorowsky F Wisconsin National title two years ago
Tim Ornell F Gustavus
Ben Ollia F Gustavus
Travis Vermulien F St. Lawrence NCAA tourney last year
Ryan Flynn F Minnesota NCAA tourney last year
Mike Montgomery F UMD
Jordan Van Guilder F USHL and Fairbanks next year

Frishmon is at Syracuse (AHL)
Hendricks is at Providence (AHL)
Bochenski is in Boston (NHL)

If it is about players moving up to the bigs this has to be the team. With three players playing at or near the highest level possible. Do any other teams have three players in the AHL or NHL from the same graduating class??? Hendricks was the number one star in Providence's first game of the season when he scored both of the teams goals in a 2-1 win. I believe Bochenski is hurt again for Boston. If for some reason both Bochenski and Hendricks are ever put on a line again in the NHL look out!!!

I'd be happier if a Centennial "guy" knew how to spell Vermeulen.

Obviously, he was not the spelling "B" champ @ Centennial High.

I agree. They were awesome. The second best team may have been the second best team in the State that year. The Class A champion Breck Mustangs.

Blake Wheeler F Green Bay/Gophers/#5 pick
Dustin Fulton F Des Moines Bucs/Hamline
Jordon Fulton F UMD
Robbie Dee F Maine
Andy Birkholz F St. Olaf
Alec Richards G Yale
Drake Herd D Hamline
Tyler Kettelkamp D Bethel

I can think of only two undefeated teams since 2000 and that is the 05' Warroad warriors. (Oshie, marvin, hardwick. olimb, etc.). And of course the more recent 07' Hermantown hawks. (Leblanc, Huttel, Hardy, etc.). at least for class A. For double A i'd pick the holy angels team that didn't make it the year after they won state, didn't they beat Shattuck? the team they beat the year before in the championship was pretty good too. (Moorhead spuds)

No question 04 Centennial. It is not possible to argue otherwise, this was the only team to not allow a goal in the state tourny. If you cant score you cant win period. It wouldnt have mattered of Oshie was peppering shots or any other team, nothing was getting by! Game over.

No question that some of these teams (2002 Holy Angels, 2000 Blaine) had some great players that moved on to D1 schools. However, I have to agree that the 2004 Centennial team was easily the most dominant. Shutting out teams in all 3 games of the state tournament tells how good they really were.

Let's move this topic back one year--to 1999...

I would say that the '99 Roseau Rams was the best team in the past decade--or more. They may have even been better than that powerful Jefferson team from '90 or '91; I don't recall the exact year...

If I recall the numbers correctly, the Rams had 9 division I or professional players off that team and 14 that played in the USHL or higher.

You're almost right, they did have 14 guys go to the USHL. 1 pro - Josh Olson (7 games for Florida, now playing overseas). 6 D1 - Mike Klema(Yale), Dave Klema (BU), Jake Brandt (UND), Derrick Byfuglien (UND), Nathan Berry (Yale), Ross Miller (Air Force). Jesse Modahl and Aaron Degerness played for the D3 UW - River Falls. A few guys like Phil Larson, Matt Erickson, and Paul Baumgartner had offers to play in low level D1 programs & D3 programs but decided to hang them up after playing 2-3 years of junior hockey. Mark Fabian played QB at Valley City State for 4 years, he's another one who definitely could've played junior hockey at least. Anyway, definitely a great team, IMO, the best team to ever come out of Roseau. Those guys were on a mission after they lost early in the year in Coleraine, very dominant after that. Chris Harrington of Gopher fame rung one off the post in overtime of the section final, so the Rams almost didn't even make it to the cities that year, but did roll through the tournament pretty handily.

In 04 centennial was good but mike taylor scored in the third period when it was 0-0 and they didn't count it. like 2 min later centennial scored and the game ended 1-0

Centennial won the 2004 Qtr by a score of 2-0, so your point is?

Agree. They were phenominal, arguably could have won the AA tourney that year.
