What stick should a Mite aged player use?

My son uses Vapor XXX and One 90 youth composite sticks. At first I was critical of composite sticks for Mite players.
My son tried using one of his friends composite sticks. He liked the weight difference from the wood and two piece sticks.
His shot was much better with a composite stick. The youth composite sticks don't cost as much as the junior sticks. On average about $100 less.


I have heard some people say that they like the feel of the wood sticks. Just like anything in life. I'm a believer that you have your kids try all three types and see what works best for them. If cost is an issue. Then stick with the wood sticks or two piece. Or find a family who's kids are going to outgrow or upgrade their composite stick and ask them if you can buy it.
New sticks are being offered every year. Most kids want the latest and greatest. So there should be used composites available cheap.

I used a wood up until Peewee A. (only kid on team to have one, got made fun of all the time. Kids brutality these days)

I didn't see any difference, I don't think a stick will determine the skill of a players shot/ability that much, it's in all fairness possible that he'll make that extra 5 mph on a slapshot (which doesn't matter in this case because hes a mite).

That's actually the only difference I personally see in a composite. Is that a slapshot works out much better due to the certain flex's.

I am playing bantams and i still use a wood stick

there was a streach were when i was a squirt i thought that if i had a great million dollar stick i would be like crosby but that was before his time so probley wayne or someone else. but then i started to have to buy my own sticks and i tried wood and they it did the same thing just costed a lot less. I say go with wood all the way through mabey dabatable in high school

So two players that are playing the game I think offer a far better assessment than what has been given so far. Well done!

They're mites, the stick doesn't matter as long as it is sized correctly.

Real Question...Pink or Blue?
That was our big decision.
As far as wood or composite, probably doesn't matter as she holds it upside down and backwards, half the time.
But at least it's the right color

Love it! The color was pretty much the only thought when my 6 year old picked a stick also. Although, he liked the one with Crosby on the blade.

What ever kind he will want to put his hands on the most often.
I loved the "what color" thing as well

To tell you the truth I would much rather see a kid using a 1 piece stick than watch mites using a blue puck. Ultimately, Who cares what they use. I like one piece because I watch kids get more creative with the puck. Young players are expanding their reach far outside their bodies earlier than I have ever seen. One handed back hand expansions are not easy , yet every day in mite practice I watch kids pull it off with ease. The game becomes easier earlier......
So if the argument is made that a wood stick (heavier)develops strength for puck control, make the mites use a black puck and any stick they want. The added weight of the black puck will accomplish the same thing.

By the way, in my association we use the BLACK puck at mite level. In the words of Frasier, " Look at me I am running with scissors".

If lighter is not better than why are our kids using the equivalent of a super ball to learn how to play the sport? The Blue puck is an embarassment to the sport. The puck does not slide and it bounces like Flubber. I have watched kids attempt to complete a cross ice pass with good strength and speed only to have the puck slide to a stop half way to the team mate. I actually stopped the game once and had the kid make the same pass with a black puck just to see if it would have made it......You guessed it would have been just the right speed to make it to the team mate.
Once kids get to their last year of mites it becomes even more ridiculous. Better players that are developing hard accurate shots are not benefitting by the puck. Additionally, because of the light weight it raises faster and becomes more dangerous for young goalies.

MN Hockey and anyone listening that has control of the rules governing the use of the blue puck, get over it and get rid of the use of blue pucks in levels above first or second year players.

Skateguy- I agree! The Blue puck is an embarassment to the sport. I have a buddy up north. He said the blue pucks are banned in their association. He told me an interesting story behind the blue pucks. Based off your answers. I want to see if the story is true.

Questions:

1) Where are the Blue pucks made? Are these made anywhere in Minnesota?

2) What is the logical sense behind the blue pucks?

The princess is now in love with the "Make Your Own" hockey stick she saw at Hockey giant. She wants her name on her stick just like Ovechkin. She's a U10.

She really does appreciate how much ligher her composite stick is than her wood one was. "Dad, I can lift it so much better with this stick." Never mind the fact that she only started lifting it this year...

Sticks are a wonderful racket.
