I know I've seen the number before, but now I can't find it anywhere. Can anyone tell me what the magic number is for enrollment to decide whether a school is class A or AA?

See
http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/news/method07-09.htm.
There isn't a magical enrollment size in terms of number of students .... basically, the 64 largest participating schools are AA and the rest are A.
What I don't remember is how teams playing up affects this. I think they effectively bump the smallest AA school(s) down into single A.

I think its top 64 PLUS opt ups. Theres more than 8 teams in most AA sections.

I think its the top 64 plus opt ups.
The reason I think that is because there are more than 8 teams in some sections and a minimum of 8 per section.

No school is bumped down to A. It is the top 64 teams PLUS opt up schools. There are 71 teams in AA according to the section assignments on followthepuck.com
1AA = 9
2AA = 8
3AA = 9
4AA = 9
5AA = 9
6AA = 9
7AA = 9
8AA = 9

They look for the 64th-largest program (not schools, they also use coop programs in the top 64) and then set the cutoff at that number. Then, they add opt-ups. A school that opts up must commit to the higher class for a minimum of four years.
Once they set the number, some paired programs choose to split up. Delano/Rockford/Watertown split up two years ago or they would have been in AA, and this year New Prague dropped Montgomery from their program. When the league first announced the new sections, New Prague/Montgomery-Lonsdale had been placed in Class AA.

School population (9-12) of 1360 or more is AA hockey program plus those that opt up.
All others are A.

Are you sure about that? I thought I remember a post about Bemidji deciding to play A hockey for the next two years. During that time, they were going to reasses where the program was and possibly opt up again.
Elliott, whats the story?

I also thought it was only a two year commitment.

Bemidji decided not to opt up but to stay put.
In two years the MSHSL will reevaluate everything (including section alignments). At that time Bemidji school population (based on curretn #'s) may push them to AA. If not it is the feeling of those involved that thye would opt up to AA. Opting up I believe is a
four year committment.
Edit:
I double checked my rule book. It is a four year opt up.
Every two years, a recalculation.

not to be a stickler but it is Cloquet 632, Esko 369, Carlton 207 for a total enrollment of 1208 in 9-12
I know it is still an opt up, but far from David vs Goliath
