Schwan Cup musings

Now that we are two weeks into the season some things are a little clearer.
* As expected, the Gold tournament is off the chain. The field is certainly stronger than we'll see in March for the AA State Tournament.
PS2 rankings:
10- WBL
4- Holy Angels
5- Hill
13- Duluth East
7- Centennial
6- Minnetonka
2- Moorhead
11- Roseville
It is possible a team could lose three games here and still make the state tournament.
* In the Silver, Edina's route to the Cup has them playing #15 (B-SM) off the bat and conceivably either #3 (St. Thomas) or #10 (Blaine) on Friday. Some have alleged that Edina is playing beneath themselves by not participating in the top division. Given that they already scheduled three of those teams and plan on seeing one more in Sections and two or three of the rest at State does it really matter? Their schedule is stacked.
* Did I say Groundhog's Day was the third time Wayzata faces off with Edina? Wow, it might be the fourth! Good chance Edina faces Wayzata on Thursday. It happens if both win or lose their opener.
* Sesame Street flashback anyone? "One of these things just doesn't belong here, one of these things just isn't right..."
Bronze entrants:
#24- Eastview
#57- Orono
#59- Maple Grove
#62- Blake
#55- Champlin Park
#28- Stillwater
#43- Mahtomedi
.....and..... (drumroll please)
#9- BURNSVILLE
They should be the class of this field, but anything can happen and that's why they play the games. They should just take it one day at a time and focus on the task at hand. They're only a hot goalie away from being upset and breaking out the golf clubs early. On any given Friday.....
Did I miss any cliches?
Games we'd like to see:
White Bear Lake vs. Hill-Murray
Benilde vs. Breck (hey, if we're treated to Edina squaring off with the Trojans four times in one year we better say we're excited about the corrolary)
Maple Grove vs. Champlin Park
Eastview vs. Burnsville

Yea, it makes them look stupid. I will laugh if they lose in the Silver.

The current PS rankings are a joke at best.

The rankings are off but they are right with Edina at #1.

Leave it to BIAFP to tell a computer system it did the math wrong...
Check Burnsville's schedule from last year:
http://www.maxpreps.com/FanPages/Team.m ... /Minnesota
Their 8th place finish in the silver cup last year was games 4, 5 and 6 on an 8 game losing streak of theirs last year. They could've upset their way to a state championship, but the team who went 12-1 after their 8 game losing streak then upsetting their way into state still got 8th in the silver cup and therefore drops to bronze.
As for Edina, I don't think they're really to blame here. Not many coaches would want their players to get beat up with 6 games in 10 days all against top teams. So, instead have them play 6 games against good teams. Personally I think the organization is to blame if you think Edina should be in the Gold Division. That being said, they didn't choose to drop down, they're still playing good teams.

That Maple Grove vs. Champlin Park game will be a rematch of the game last week. CP won 5-4 in overtime.

I think #2, #3, and #9 in the computer ranking lost last night. That changes things a bit!

East hockey can correct me if I'm wrong, (he also corrects me when I'm not) but I think it takes about 7 games for everyone before last years rankings are no longer factored.

Eight games. I've been mulling over the idea of dropping it down to four or five but will have to study the effects of doing so before I make the change...next season. Eight might be more than is necessary. Not sure.
More on this in the HAL thread after I run the updated rankings and post the new Top 15 on the main minnhock.com page.

Do you also wear the State Runner-Up belt until you lose it?

Nobody is taking the championship away from Roseau until march.
#1 on Minnhock doesn't get you a banner, just a target.

Actually, no. Perhaps the biggest strength of computer rankings is that they aren't biased by prior history. Many a fan has said that Notre Dame always starts too high in the CFB poll. It is considered a good thing that the past is forgotten.
Or actually yes, you do wear the belt until you lose it. But a #1 ranking in a computer tally is not a championship in any way, shape, or form.

Uh actually mnhock20, Champlin will not meet up with MG unless they meet in the Gold division championship. CP does have a chance of playing Burnsville in the semis, lets hope Mahtomedi can bring it to the house in the quaters and beat the blaze

It's not true:
http://www.nscsports.org/tmp_images/BRO ... racket.pdf
If they both go 0-2, 1-1, or 2-0 in their first two games they will play the third against each other.

Anytime.
Edina was asked to play in Gold this year and turned it down. Anyone know which team currently playing in Gold was the team added because of that?

MNsGreatest#2 read towards the bottom of the first post on this topic. O-town clown said CP vs MG is a matchup he wanted to see. I told him that had already happened.
