off-season training reference needed...

My son took 5 years off and now, at 17 he's back on the ice playing JV at West (he's the captain, though).

He'll make the Varsity team next year because most this years team graduates, so here's the problem:

He needs Varsity style drills and coaching this summer, not pointless games with no coaching.
His positioning, skating, awareness, all not so good. He's also too big for his legs, speed and stamina.

So if anyone has had good experiences with summer training, please respond with links, numbers, names, details... you know. Tell me where to look!

Thanks!

Paul

First, don’t wait till this summer. Start now.

But you need a program (trainer) in your area. One on one or with two other players. Ask around if someone is using a trainer now on your team for starts. Then he (not you) needs to implement what he has learned, believe in it and apply on his own. He has only 9 months left till next year season and it up to HIM!

Nisswa is a great place for a few weeks this summer.

See if you can in touch with Scott Stephan, he does a very good job.

I don't know if they have anything similar in your area. But the Orthopedic Sports Center in St. Cloud has a program called H.E.A.T. (High Energy Advanced Training) I've heard nothing but good things and positive results from people who go through the program.

Thanks. I hope he is owning his weight training (and working on it as he tells me at school). I don't know who Scott Stephan is, but I'll try tracking him down.

I agree that time, even now is short, stealth. I really wish the coach would let some of the JV practice with V, but there's a lot of ice after the regular season to do that I think.

Not like you guys want to hear, but the saga has turned 90 degrees... the JV goalie completely flaked out and now my son's put the gear on (he's the only one to admit to any experience at all). He's worked with Stauber and played some part-time goal in BP 7 years ago.

So WHO KNOWS where this is going to go!

Is this really true?
If so, as far as the goalie thing goes, have your son continue with Stauber or call Steve Carroll goalie school for advice. They are both good people and would probably come up with a concrete plan for your son.

As far as training goes, you might want to try Total Hockey Fitness. We've only been to the one in Minnetonka, but I think they have another site somewhere else.

We really loved working with Rob.
He's IS the greatest guy so we'd likely stick there if Cody decides to do that. Nisswa looks really great, but way spendy.

He played goal last night and looked good, but he said he was way more nervous than he was on Thursday!
