I heard from a friend today Derek Stephan (Shattuck-via Hastings) has been added to the U-17 National team that leaves for Slovakia soon. I seen him play while at Hastings a couple year's ago. From what i remember he had tremendous hands, and he could score. He must be doing ok in Fairbault? Of course out of sight out of mind..What other Minny players made this team?

It is Brad Stepans son, he left Hastings after his Sophmore year. I just looked on the Shattuck web site looks like he is having a great year. He has almost 70 points in 34 games. Congrats to him, I'm sure he will represent the USA team well. Who else made it from Minnesota?

Stepan was born in 1990. How can he play with an U17 team where everybody on the team is a 1991 birthdate?

The kid at STA is Ryan Stepan he is Brads nephew, he also left after his Sophmore year at Hastings. Not sure why they both left but they did.

Are you sure you don't mean the
U18 Team for the Five Nations Tournament in Finland?
The U17 team does have a
tournament in Slovakia, but he wouldn't qualify for that.

It's a 90 Tourney that the 91 team plays in every year. Every year Team USA adds 6-7 90 birthyears to play in it. I know they did the same thing last year with a couple of kids. Never the less it should be a great expierence for all the Minnesota kids. Who else is going other than Stepan.

This information is probably correct. I forgot, it's actually an u18 tournament for the European teams, but the NTDP U17 team represents the US. So, any American under 18 (Stepan will be 18 in June) is technically eligible. Last year they added '88s Carter Camper and Barry Almeida.

Derek would have been noticed where ever he played. He has worked hard the past 6-7 years to get where he is at, everything he has got he has deserved. If he was at Hastings this year he would be one of the Mr Hockey front runners and Hastings' wins wouldn't be considered upsets.
Good luck to the young man.

I believe Stepan is headed to the BADGERS after he graduates Shattuck.
Does he technically fit into the Minnesota grown category after being a Shattuck player the last couple of years?
By the way, his dad has a great little hockey shop down by the bridge headed into Hastings...and his little cousin Zach (may be heading to Shattuck) is a heck of player as well...must just run in the Stepan blood..
Good luck to a great young man and player!!

Stepan is a great kid. I know him personally and he has a good head on his shoulders. Hockey is his life and he has worked at it his whole life. And his year at Shattuck this year shows how hard he has worked. Nearly 70 points, kudos to Stepan.

I heard at Impact hockey that he is 6 foot 1 inch like 185. He has gotten alot bigger than when he was a Sophmore. He always had great hands and could score. He obviously has gotten stronger if he is putting on the USA Jersey.

That is great he is a great play amazing hands. Spoken to a few people and they've thought he would be going straight to Wisconsin. I can't wait to see him play against the maroon and gold next year.
