State: Private School Bracket vs. Public School Bracket

Here is an idea for the State Tourney:

Go back to one class tourney, but have a 16 team tournament with the brackets starting out seperated between private schools and Public Schools. Then on the last day of the tourney the place holders of the respective brackets would face off to determine the overall place holders. i.e. private 7th place vs. public 7th place; private 5th place vs. public 5th place; private 3rd place vs. public 3rd place; and private 1st place vs. public 1st place.

I think it adds some drama, chance for some "I told ya so's," etc...

This format could even be used with the current system, just replace the word private with "class A," and the word public with "class AA." I would think that would be cool too.

However you skin the cat, the end is the same:
one overall state champ!

What do you think?

gatzke does make a good point.

I , for one, do miss the acrimony when we Catholics play each other and there isnt a anybody chanting "publik skools".

So, even though we like the idea, something has to be done to insure that there will be lots of divisiveness.

It would be way to easy for private schools to make the state tournament if there was an 8 team bracket for all the private schools. Compared to the number of public schools that wouldnt really be fair.

I say make one SECTION a private school section and let all the recruited kids duke it out to see whose the best and then one team can go to state.

That way theres only one private school in the state tournament and then everyone can cheer against them! :D

This topic is so over used.... This has been brought up by US on this board many times and we all know the outcome. While were at it, we should have a section for just schools within the 494/694 corridor, or maybe one for just the schools that start with the letter X.... Leave the tournament the way it is. It is working and everyone knows it.

Sorry Zamman but the current tourney does not work the way it is. We need to get back to one tournament and send the "privates" back to their own invitational the way it used to be  You want to go to a private school and leave your poor public school friends behind........have at it

STOOOOOOOOOPID IDEA!!!!

Hate them if you want, I know I do! , but the private influence has raised the bar for the quality of hockey in our state.

STOOOOOOOOOPID IDEA!!!!
not so fast nuet
Hill would love this idea They would still get to state (maybe), and teams like WBL, Stillwater, Tartan etc would have a better shot at state as well
Hill would have a better chance of getting second in the state rather than 7th or 8th -less chance of a two and out for them

Yes because kids from Edina, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Woodbury, Centennial and White Bear are so much more poor than the private school kids.....gimme a break.

If "daddy's money" is such an issue maybe we should rank each school in the state by average total income per household and have a tournament for the 'rich schools,' one for the 'middle class schools', and one for everyone else. OR how about we get over the public vs private debate and play the game.

Private schools should start their own league. Move away from the MSHSL and get rid of the transfer rule. Then watch the bitching volume go up.!!!! Lets try it for 3 years and see what happens to high school hockey as we know it. You guys like to think this would solve all the issues. "Throw em in their own tournament" ....I have to beleive that is not what you really want...it would be a disaster for public school hockey.

Hockeypuck:

Do you really think that the private schools only have "rich" kids playing there. Look at the rosters a little more in detail and stop making naive comments like that....

When did Centennial get thrown in a class with Edina, White Bear and Minnetonka as far as being upper class in money??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Good one puck

But there should be a seperate bracket just for Catholics.

I like it....Catholics vs. Protestants - just like in Ireland. The only requirement is that every player on a Cathloic school MUST be Catholic - they either have to be a craddle Catholic or convert at a public ceremony!

They the Catholics, Protestants, and other private schools can crown a champ then play the Pagan champs right? Of course the losers of the Private vs. Public title games would be subjected to any sort of public torture used during the Inquisition!

The biggest problem with making the privates play in their own state tournament is that doing so would diminish the integrity of public state tournament because not all of the best teams would be represented.

I'd like to see a 16 format where somehow, the best teams (A and AA) were represented.

give the boot to the privates......tighten the transfer rules.....go back to having 99% home grown talent like the 60 s or early 70 s teams had

I know...I agree with you. I didn't say that all the private schools would fall into the rich category. That was part of what I meant when I said rank every school by family's average income, that would include public and private schools. I think A LOT of people would be surprised see that the private schools would not all be at the top of the list. Sorry for not being more clear originally.

Not sure if you guys can't read or what the deal is, but if you read the proposition in the first post of the thread there would be 8 private school teams and 8 public school teams. And the first games would be 8 public v. private games.

Interesting concept. Which bracket would claim Edina though? :?
