Cloquet beat Flake 4-2 in Flake earlier this year. A chance? Yes. But it won't be easy.

7AA Final Rankings

I would expect that they'd be this:

1. Duluth East (beat seeds 2,3,4 and 5 and played quite possibly the toughest schedule in the state)
2. Anoka (beat Grand Rapids head to head, Elk River twice and are going to have the best overall record in the section, only chance for moving down is if they lost to Andover on Thursday)
3. Grand Rapids (beat Cloquet head to head the second time around and Elk River, only way they might move down at all is if they lost the next 2 games before the section meeting on Wednesday)
4. Cloquet (beat Duluth East and Forest Lake, is going to have a similar record as Forest Lake, but because of the head to head win they'll get the higher seed)
5. Forest Lake (beat Grand Rapids early in the season, play in reasonably difficult conference, didn't play Elk River but give them a slight nod and higher seed based on a better record, will be a tough out in sections)
6. Elk River (beat Duluth East early, Andover twice, a little down this year but they still wear that ER on their sweater and are very competitive, Sarsland will have that team ready to play in sections, will be a tough quarterfinal matchup)
7. Andover (took Elk River, Anoka and Cloquet all to overtime and just beat Blaine, pretty much locked in as the 7th seed, gritty team, will be a hard team to knock out in the quarterfinals)
8. Cambridge-Isanti (beat St. Francis, will be one and done in sections, their quarterfinal game will be reminiscent of last years with East)
9. St. Francis

- 6 days till Section 7AA Seedings Meeting
- 16 days till Semifinal Saturday at the DECC
- 21 days till the Section 7AA Championship game at the DECC

I think Mike Randolph will have his work cut out for himself trying to argue his way to get East the top seed. When you break it down on a team-by-team basis and how they are likely to vote, it comes down to how Cambridge and St. Francis vote. East will likely get seeded at the top of list by Anoka, Grand Rapids, Forest Lake, and Cloquet. Anoka will probably get top votes from East, Elk River, and Andover. East must get one more vote from either Cambridge or St. Francis to get that top seed. The question is, since these are metro area schools that have not been exposed to northern hockey, will they vote for the team in their area that they most likely hear much more about? Assuming Anoka wins tonight over Andover (which may be a bit hasty), they would have a very good argument for that top seed. They have a better overall record, a better section record, and their schedule certainly isn't loaded with cupcake teams.

I know how I would rank them, but that is irrelevant. This one is all in the hands of the coaches and there were too many wins, losses, and ties mixed in among all seven of the top teams -- throw in the fact that they all didn't play head-to-head and it becomes nearly unpredictable. The only thing I see set in stone is Cambridge at #8 and St. Francis at #9. The rest is anyone's guess.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Anoka next to the #1, nor would I be shocked to see one of the other northern teams at #5 or #6. (Doesn't mean I necessarily agree with it, by the way!)

The only thing is East beat Anoka 4-0. A 4 goal shutout is convincing enough for me. But point taken, who knows what the southern coaches will decide with their votes.

Hey, I agree, but Anoka will probably argue that they beat Elk River... twice, East didn't. They have a better record, they only lost one section game, the games all count, not just one, etc.....

They have an argument and there will be ears listening. That's the only point I was trying to make.

Puck,
Are you implying in your statement above that East has a "cupcake" schedule? If you are, you have lost all credibility with me and I would assume a few other readers or fans of your knowlege. CUPCAKE??? DOn't agree there, also if you know anything about randolph, he and sarsland are good buds and I know Sarsland knows who deserves the #1 seed. He was lucky to have pulled out that victory in Elk RIver, and he knows who the best team was that night for the majority of the game.

You are a ranger, face it, you hate East too, can't help it, but you do. Oh well. Good luck to your Bluedevils.

It's to bad you can't get the transcripts from the voting, or can you?

You don't want to know. Just trust the integrity of the coaches.

BTW - Anoka won tonight 5-2 over Andover

This section is going to be one of the most fun to watch. Anoka is very talented but got handled by East earlier in the year who lost to ER by some miracle. Grand Rapids and Cloquet can compete. Hell Andover beat Blaine so they are going to be tough...the quarterfinals are going to be awesone

You are right on. The only game that does not have the potential to be a barn-burner is the quarterfinal game for the #1 seed. Heck, even the play-in game should be close. You gotta love it! Image

Since when does 'He was lucky to have pulled out that victory in Elk RIver, and he knows who the best team was that night for the majority of the game" mean jack-squat?

Sarsland lost twice to Anoka this year for the 1st time in a long time (if ever) and ER beat DE...so I think he has the integrity to vote Anoka the #1 seed over DE...if not, why bother to have a seeding meeting?

As Puck Ranger noted...both teams have an argument for the #1 seed....being new to the section will not likely work in Anoka's favor...but having an opinion contrary to certain DE supporters does't make someone an DE hater...whether they're from the Range...or the Cities.

One can hate East and still put it aside and look at the seedings from a neutral standpoint. I have East as the #1 seed. Although, I want them number one because then they'll play CEC and I think the Jacks have the best chance to beat em in the semi's.

I don't think the fans of any other section come remotely close to 7AA's passion when it comes to the sectional seedings. I'm oping Anoka gets the number 1 seed just to see the fireworks!

And Anoka should get it...being this is now a Cities Region....Anoka, ER, Andover, CI, Forest Lake, SF......
