I remember back in the early to mid-90's that a AA team made it to the dance that was a surprise. Was it Chaplain Park? I remember it was one of the first years for their hockey program I think.

champlin park(AA) and both chisago lakes(A) in 95 were monumental upsets, i do not remember what seeds they were but i believe both had losing records.
Lakeville (b4 the split) came in a couple times in the early 2000's with losing records but they probably had a high seed in section 1AA

I'm not sure if it was '97 or '98, but Henry Sibley was the 6th seed and knocked of the Johnson Governors in the semi-finals and went on to beat South St. Paul in the final of section 2AA.
Johnson had a strong team that year, I beleive they were rated the number 1 team in the metro the majority of the year. They had some pretty skilled players such as Progreba, Lyons, and I believe there goalie won the Brismek award.

if Sibley played Johnson in the 2nd round they would have had to be the 4th or 5th seed, Johnson was #1 in the metro that year for sure, so they were the #1 seed in 2AA that year.

Champlin Park was a new program then but they hit the ground running with talent. They weren't a huge upset in getting to state, I remember watching their quarterfinal game, they weren't outclassed at all.
2003: Lakeville (13-13-2)
1986: Richfield (12-11) They beat Edina in the Semis and that was a big upset, then followed it up with another upset against Tonka in the Finals. If Edina was the #1, Richfield was a #5 seed. If Tonka was the #1, Richfield was the #6.
2003: Fergus Falls (11-13) although they were probably still a #2 seed in 4A at that time though.
2000: Hutchinson (12-14)

The 1996 White Bear Squad had a record of 7-14-1 going into sections. Even if they won state they still would not have had a winning record. Now I realize that would have meant winning a first round game. I believe the Hill team they beat to get to state only had one loss that year prior to the section championship game. Pistol seems to be the expert on Hill History though, I am sure he could tell us all more about that season.

It was the '96-'97 season when Sibley knocked off #1 Johnson and then beat #2 SSP in the section finals game. I was on that team, thanks for bringing up bad memories. Sibley had a hot goalie in Bob Telarico and a few decent skaters.
Also, I believe Pogreba was gone the year or two before the '96-'97 season but Derek Eastman was still there and he was a damn good player.

The Lakeville teams recently comming out of the pathetic 1aa
2002- Lakeville 13-13-1
2003- Lakeville 13-13-2
2004- Lakeville 16-8-4
2006- Lakeville North 14-12-1
2007- Probably Lakeville South with a similar record
-I'll give them that they played some good games at state but only have 1 victory (2004 consolation bracket) in all those years

There was a team from Pine City out of Section 5A that was a #7 seed and knocked off some big teams to get to the section final game before losing by one goal to a team that they beat twice that year.

I hate to give Edina more attention, but in '87, they made the tourney with a record of 12-10-2, which means they started sectional play with a sub .500 record. They had to be a lower seed in section 6 that year. This was the one class tournament format, so they had to play 3 games in sections, maybe even 4. So they either had 8 or 9 wins before the playoffs. I'm sure one of the cake eaters could fill us in....

Cabela10,
It was the 95/96 year that Sibley beat Johnson at the Fair Grounds. Johnson had been to the state tournament the year before and I myself was hoping to go back to back but Sibley took it to Johnson that night and beat South ST.Paul to go to state. I know this because My son Shawn Pogreba played for Johnson and made the state as a junior and did not as a senior and my older son had the same fate when Hill-Murray beat him his senior year in mulitiple overtimes at the fair grounds as he looked to return to the big show. Needless to say I think the Fair ground rink has been bad luck for most Johnson teams. Derek Eastman played the next year at Johnson as Shawn was playing at Minnesota-Duluth.

The question is lowest seed, not worst record.
Lakeville was 5th once though. 2007 Century went at the #1 seed.
Austin made it out of 1AA as the 6th seed in the 1990's
Edina #1 in state at that point

Edina was the #1, Minnetonka was #2, and Armstrong was #3. Richfield would have been #4 or #5.

Actually, you're right. Edina played FOUR games in Section VI. They dropped the puck at Braemar against Hutchinson and Edina fell behind 1-0 right away before winning 10-1. Edina would have been 8-10-2. A late season goaltending change to Matt Bertram improved the team's fortune and it was the following season they won state.

95/96 sibley might have beaten johnson but they did not beat ssp. The packers went to state in 96, and the Warriors went in 97

White Bear beat Hill in the
semifinals in 1996 and then advanced to the tournament with a win over Roseville.

What low seeded team could make some noise this year? I know that "it can happen" (see thread below) to almost any team, and any given team could lose, and all the other sports cliches...
Section 1AA - Century could be seeded 4 or 5 and get to state in a wide open 1AA race.
Anybody else have any?

no Tier 1 and Tier 11 answers. 1992 was the first year of the Tier Tournament.

1A - could have the 4th, 5th, even 6th seed make it out.
6AA is pretty deep; 2AA is deep - both could have the 4th seed make it out.

With everyone having a day or two to digest this it looks like 6 (Austin '93) is the cut line.
There's been a number of teams with sub .500 records but in most cases they were no lower than 3 or 4 or 5.
For all you 7's or more, history will dispute you, but
YES: It Can Happen.
