1 - How many losses do you think Roseau would have with Edina's schedule?
a: None. No way no how.
b: probably one somewhere along the way to someone
c: 2 or 3
d: more
They play the games because you don't know who would win, otherwise playing the games would be a waste of time. Of course, Edina has the hardest schedule EVER in the history of hockey, or so I'm told, so Roseau would probably lose all of them.
2 - Who is better?
a: Aaron Ness
b: Larry Olimb (218 WCHA points)
A. Ness is pretty special. Not the greatest that ever played by any stretch of the imagination, but special.
3 - Rams 2008 are better than Rams 2007
a: T
b: F
Don't like "better". I think this team has more talent and is deeper.
4 - In the past 50 years, how many times has Roseau sent an undefeated team to state and how many of them went on to win?
a: 3, 1
b: 5, 3
c: 2, 0
d: 6, 2
A) Been down three times 59, 77, and 78. Neal and the boys always had the curse. Neither the 77 or 78 teams won the tourney but will probably go down as one of the greatest high school teams ever, at least the greatest line (Aaron, Neal, and Butsy) that ever played High School Hockey. All three went on to great NHL careers. Funny, can't seem to recall any of the Edina players on the 77 and 78 teams of the top of my head.
5 - Rams 2007 were better than Warroad 1988
a: T
b: F
Define better. Would 2007 Roseau win? Yes. HS Hockey's evolved a lot in the last twenty years, that doesn't make them "better".
6 - Which is the best Roseau team ever (so far)?
a: 2007 champs, 26-2 entering St. Paul
b: 1999 champs, 24-1
c: 1990 champs, 23-2
d: 1978 3rd, 23-0
e: 1977 lost consolation, 23-0
f: 1959 undefeated champs
Again, define best. I like none of the above. Give me old school 30's action when they played on the river and wore Sears Roebucks as shin guards. '59s the only undefeated Roseau team so if I had to choose I'd say they have the greatest Roseau legacy.
7 - What is the next pair of numbers in this sequence?
2-0
5-3
12-4
4-2
6-1
7-0
3-4
???
No idea
8 - I think Roseau could get knocked off in Section VIII
a: T
b: F
Anything is possible, but the odds are good they won't. Already have beaten everyone in the section pretty handily.
9 - All the games in St. Paul will be tough for the Rams
a: T
b: F
Who knows. Haven't played any of those games yet. I know Roseau will play hard so the opponent better be ready to play hard as well.
10 - Assuming they meet, I think Roseau could lose to Edina
a: T
b: F
Could lose? Most certainly. Roseau "could" lose to Becker. Again, that's why they actually play games. Do I think Edina's the better team on paper? No. Although, Edina always finds a way to beat good teams and neutralize good players throughout their history--just ask Henry Boucha.

Wow. O-town must have a lot of time on his hands. Who cares who is number 1 right now. Its after the last game that it matters. There are a ton of people who got a major stiffy regarding schedules. At one point I was just hoping that it would be an enjoyable state tournament with some good teams, but it has gotten to the point to where I hope Edina and/or Roseau both get upset in sections. I am a Roseau fan, but I am also objective. It gets real old to listen to both sides complain about who's better.
Here's hoping for a Prior Lake in section 2AA and Becker/Big Lake out of section 8AA.
And for those of you that don't get it, that last part was a JOKE!

Watchdog, as expected, SOMEONE from Roseau carried the torch and offered straight opinions. I find some of your answers very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
About Olimb. Look how much the game has changed. He was as skilled as anyone and proved that with a ridiculously successful Gopher career, but in the NHL Draft he was a 10th Round selection. Today I think he'd be given a little more consideration but maybe I'm wrong.

61, I don't know who told you Edina has the strongest schedule in history. Several Minnesota teams have schedules as challenging this season alone. Duluth East and Wayzata come to mind. I think plenty of teams have schedules this strong each year. I only mention Edina as a reference point because other threads have seen Roseau faithful make the point that Roseau undefeated is obviously clearly superior to Edina because they lost to lowly Benilde.
The nice part is you don't have to get real hung up on subjective discussion. Schedule strengths are measured at the MinnHock site if you care to check.

Well if its written in MinnHock it must be true. I'm so glad there's people out there that write web sites so I no longer have to be burdened to think.

Bob, you did great. According to what I looked up the answer is that Roseau has sent three teams to state that were undefeated and just once they won it all. I think it is interesting only in that anyone can play the jerk like Green & White Fan or BIAFP do. It is so easy. For example, anyone could say, "WHO CARES about going undefeated!?!? Go ahead and count your fourth undefeated run through Sections. We'll count our state championship banners. How many of those do you have again?" (Of course, it works better talking trash like this when your community has more than Roseau...not so much if it is Hill-Murray or Centennial or Moorhead.)
Roseau is undefeated and that is a very impressive achievement. Of course, over history a good number of MN HS teams would be undefeated against a schedule like that. One of my graduate school professors used to rail all the time about the media getting in a frenzy because someone opened the season batting over .400. He'd point out, correctly, that it isn't at all rare for a player to bat over .400 for a month or even more. The fact it coincided with the beginning of a season didn't make it any more impressive. My point? Only that there are several teams that have won five or ten games in a row against Top 40 teams like Roseau has this season. Sure it is neat that they have done it in a season after they won state the March before.
I'm wondering if pre-internet there was as much excitement for the other three undefeated Ram teams. Only one won it all. I'm sure there was.
Someone private messaged me that they'd asked Aaron Broten what he thought about this year's team. He said they looked great etc.... I promise you I know what he is thinking. They are great and I hope they'll win BUT.... we'll see what happens in St. Paul. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he graduated in 1979. That means:
- He was part of the 1977 team that entered state at 23-0 and lost not once but TWICE to Edina East and Hill-Murray.
He was part of the 1978 team that also entered state at 23-0 and took 3rd after losing to Edina East.
He was part of the 1979 that took 3rd because they lost 12-4 (is that a typo?) to Edina East. TWELVE to 4. For a group of kids that were 67-2 in their regular season HS games.
Until the games are finished you don't know. Certainly Roseau and Edina fans with perspective are aware.
- Edina West 1981, upset by SSP
Edina 1983, shocked by Columbia Heights
Edina 1986, didn't even reach a Section final!
At this time last year Roseau wasn't projected to get out of VIII.
I hope Edina and Roseau do meet. I think the kids deserve that. Of course, this ignores the fact that tons of other kids deserve it too.

Interesting on the Roseau w/Ness versus Warroad w/Olimb question. Two think modern-day Roseau is better, one says no, and 61 makes the good point that today's team would probably win a game if they suited up but that's too easy of an answer. (Like Bob Cousy wouldn't dominate Steve Nash, compared to players of their eras they are probably equal.)
People have wanted to stay pretty far away from #7, but one person took a stab with 1-0. To read all the posts by folks like BIAFP or G&W I suspected someone would say 2-6 or 1-10 or something.
A couple responses favor Roseau 2008 over 2007. Deeper, more talent. It'll be exciting to see if they repeat.

Yeah, you're right. As long as
- you ignore Edina's 9 championships, and
explain how Aaron Broten played 41 games for the Gophers during the 79-80 season, tallying 72 points on 25g and 47a
You're right. I know you're right. Because you always say you're right. Help me understand how here.
Nine titles isn't as many as seven. Aaron didn't graduate from HS before enrolling at the U? I suppose. Somehow Pete Dye hadn't graduated from HS when he started college... something to do with military commitments.

The Huge Hook wrote:Edina West 1981, upset by SSP

Huge, that was an ouch. For the brief period the schools were split West was a weak sister to East and 1981 was the final year before the merger. #1 entering the Civic Center with a Hollywood script finish awating - "other" school wins state before folding the "traditional power" into it - the Cougars lost a tight game to the Packers.
I think Phil Housley was a junior and Larry Housley was a senior, so it isn't like they were dogmeat.
No matter how good a team thinks it is there are still six games on the road to the title. No team in Minnesota this season is so clearly dominant that the state tournament event is just a coronation. Seldom do you see that, but I suspect nobody was going to beat the glory Jefferson teams.
Congrats to SSP. All Westies remember that to this day. East won so many years just before that I'm sure people can't even keep them all straight! For West, 1981 was it!

All history books count Edina with 9. You can check. If you find that Edina hasn't won nine, please notify General Sports to stop selling t-shirts that show the nine times listed. Who authorized these? Obviously not you.
1969
1971
1974
1978
1979
1982
1984
1988
1997
Edina so often faced Roseau these years that I'm sure it made the papers (paper?) up there. I think they played each other in 1971, 1978, 1979, and 1984.
Roll your eyes all you want. Seems obvious you are doing it to look away from something.
nine > SEVEN
Aaron Broten not in HS in 1980
Believe me, small-town Roseau winning seven titles is way more impressive than suburban behemoth Edina winning nine. There is no need for you to slight the accomplishments of others in order to give the credit due to Roseau's amazing run of success.
After this season it might be 8 to 9, but then Ness graduates and who knows when the Rams can equal.

I'll look. I seem to remember a bunch of woe-is-us whining.
Best of luck to Roseau in the game with I-Falls. It is a great story for them to reach the final undefeated.
