Giving an extra game

In sections with play in games, which happens to be all except 2AA, those teams who participate in the play in game get an "extra" game. Generally speaking, the 9+ seeds won't make it to state, but they are getting to play a post season game before others. In the off chance they make it to state, they've played an extra game. Would it be fair to let those not involved in a play in game play a game on the date the play in games are being held? The outcome of the game would have no bearing (win or lose) on anything in playoffs, but would give teams and players an addition night on the ice.

I can see the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it argument" but this could also be an extra day for the bottom seeds of brackets to get one more game, an arena to make some more money, two teams who have yet to play each other play, etc. I can see both sides, just a thought.

The tricky thing about this is that schedules are made before the season, so what happens if a team schedules a game for the play-in date, but then ends up having to play in it? I don't think the MSHSL would be promote letting teams assume they're good enough not to have to worry about this.

That has happened a few times before. They cancel their scheduled regular season game and play the playoff game. It happened in 7AA in 2005-2006 with one of the play-in teams - I forget which team it was.

You don't need to schedule a game. Just step up a scrimmage with a local team. Work on things that you may have struggled at towards the end of the season. Do a controlled scrimmage instead of a real game that means nothing. That only creates potential injuries.

That's what I meant; schedule the extra game after seedings come out.

Most teams, if not all, already do this type of thing.

Must be. Where are you from that you do not know this?

I don't know of any northern teams that schedule a scrimmage between regular season and play offs.

HShockeywannbe-

You know less and less everyday. Maybe the STA swim team does this prior to sectionals but by this time of the season they really do not need to play an extra game to make things "fair". If you need to work on things by this time of year do it in practice and if that doesn't work it's too late!
