1982 White Bear Mariner Team

This is the one team to ever accomplish anything on the good side of the state tournament bracket from White Bear. It was however a little before my time of following High School Hockey.
Would anybody out there have any good information or stories about this team?

Is that why you are wbmd?
Rumor has it that the boys may have done a little partying the night before the game against Edina, any truth to this?

I can respect that.
What can you tell me about their style of play. I heard they liked to take the body. I also heard the team was really big for a team of that era. Multiple guys or 6' and close to 200 lbs which for the era was a pretty big hockey player.

Easy there, wbmd does not like to give his secrets away.
Also Mariner and White Bear were not exactly a friendly rivalry. Kids from the north and south sides of town didn't exactly get along back in the day.
so asking a guy from Mariner if he is a White Bear grad may not go over so good.

Many conclude that wbmd is a WB fan when I have seen that he is not particularly a fan of Da Bears. This Mariner thing might be the answer. Learn something new every day...

82 Mariner team had the right mix of skill players and plumbers. They were huge and looked old with beards and receding hair lines.
Jeff Parker-Michigan State and Buffalo Sabres
Scott Brydes-Minor League Pro many years
Gary Kieger-Jr A and short stint with UMD
Don Baker-St Thomas
Curt McCleod -St Thomas
Tony Zajac-St Thomas
To name a few....
They destroyed everyone in their section. State Qrts they hammered a Cory Millen (less) Cloquet team--I beleive Millen broke his leg in the sections.In they semis they beat Hibbing and Pat Michelletti. In the finals Wally Chapman scored a goal for Edina late in the first period to put Edina up 2-0, but mariner challenged the size of his curve. It was way illegal and back then they took the goal away and gave the player a 10 mn misconduct. This however only pissed off the Hornets and i beleive the final was 6-0.

I was in college back then and had a friend who was a Mariner grad. I remember that's all we heard about that week.
I'm trying to remember, but after 26 years it's fuzzy...They were the Dolphins? Colors blue and white? Logo on the jersey was an anchor?
Is this correct?

A lot of folks picked Mariner to beat Edina because they were so big. Not to be, as the 6-0 beatdown had everyone leaving the Civic Center talking about Edina's speed. Can't hit what you can't catch, and the Mariner kid couldn't have caught a cold on that night.
Edina was loaded with their first merged team after several years as East and West. Dave Maley, Wally Chapman, John DeVoe, Bill Brauer, Dan Carroll, and several other very good players.

This was a team that you could tell was going to be good when the seniors were sophomores.
This team also had three seniors that played varsity as freshmen - Gary Keiger, Curt McLeod and Don Baker.
Also had Bruce Fishback - a junior on the team - who played some at UMD. As well as a sophomore - Mark Anderson - who later played at Ohio State.
In the semifinal victory over Hibbing, head coach Tom Simpson started senior back-up goalie Tim Bohrer who obviously played quite well.
Let's also not forget a hard hitting senior wing - Bucky Holten - whose parents were killed in a house fire a week before Christmas that same season.

It is funny how once the schools merged back together all of the Mariner history went the way of the dodo bird.
I think it would be extremely cool if tonight the Bears skated out wearing blue and Gold jersey's with an anchor on them.

Just a few years ago, the Bears' jerseys did have a small Mariner logo on the shoulder.
They played in the St. Paul Suburban Conference when it actually was a strong conference with North St. Paul, Henry Sibley (another state team that year), South St. Paul and Stillwater.. They were quite competitive.

When did Mariner open?
I think they closed in the mid- to late-80s, because I remember the White Bear basketball team had like 7 or 8 returning starters the year they won state.

Mariner opened in the fall of 72, Class of 74 was the first graduating class.
