Good afternoon,
That is the latest buzz among Dog fans on their penaltybox.com site...but, too premature to confirm?

I just don't want this to turn out to be like the
'Ben Lynch to UMD' thread that was a disaster in terms credability.

That was my bad on the Ben Lynch thread. It was a misunderstanding, someone was talking about Brady Hjelle being committed to UMD, and Lynch's name came up because they both play for Ceder Rapids. My bad

I'd had heard some talk about it, but I've also heard things against this. I do know that UMD has been looking at both him and Johnson, but haven't heard anything firm.

Sounds like an infection to the leg...
Who and where is this kid from? What kind of game...

He's a Duluth Denfeld foward. Between him and Jake Johnson, they hold the most points in the Northland this year.
Excellent hockey player, can read the ice well, decent size, crafty goal scorer.
The infection I've heard he does have is his inability to keep his emotions under control at times....a possible problem at the college level.

Thank you sir
I have heard Denfield was a good skating club, saw a small portion of their game against Lourdes in Rochester (destroyed Lourdes that game, 7-1?), but left to watch daughters U12A game in another rink

They're both pretty prolific goal scorers. I've seen them both play several times. And the Hotchkin kid is a great playmaker and scorer in his own right. I'm sure there will be a lot of scouts in Cloquet tonight watching , among others, these two kids. Like I've said, and it is a bit of a stretch cause I still HAVEN'T seen anything quite like those, but other than Spehar and Locker, these two are argueably the best goal scoring tandem in the Northern area in years and are right now.
I've heard Johnson say he wants to go to UMD via the USHL, but haven't heard the same about Stafne.
I've heard of some "negative incidents" regarding the latter that should make a scout question if college is the correct direct route, or if the juniors may be better. Some of them are just outright bad decisions made under emotional pressure, but others I've heard are off the ice. Doesn't detract him from being a great hockey player, but when a COLLEGE is looking at you, that it one thing that will eventually come up. Attitude.
Look at Locker. Great hockey player. Went to Wisconsin. Academically, couldn't make it. Doesn't mean he was a bad hockey player, just not a school guy.

I had heard from some St. John's hockey players that Stafne has made a visit there...but I didn't witness it personally. After watching him play last night, he's darn good. Very good skater and has pretty good size.

Hello everyone -
Thanks for everyone's thoughts on Stafne. Question remains? Is he a Bulldog for '09/10 or is he being recruited by UMD but nothing official?
Still nothing on the Duluth Tribune or the recruit site that Chris Heisenburg updates daily...seems strange

I know he is also a very good golfer... I talked to his dad earlier this year and he said Chris would like to play golf in college too.

Good evening,
If you check out the Ciskie Blog site it looks like Bruce has retracted his statement regarding Stafne and his verbal to UMD.

Something doesn't seem to add up...no official word and it has been two + days since this story has surfaced. Time will tell but, I don't think it is a done deal.

Kurdatz,
I was in high school when Spehar and Locker were at East. Those two were amazing from their youth days all the way up through high school. I haven't seen Johnson or Stafne play since I now live in Dallas, but I have a hard time believing any duo will ever come close to those two. I didn't play past bantams, but I've never seen a goal scorer like Spehar.
I don't remember Locker necessarily being a head case, he was just stupid. He did commit to Wisconsin during high school, but never made it anywhere close to there academically. He basically dropped out of school after the state tournament his senior year. I remember him getting suspended for the section final vs Cloquet and the state tourney his sophomore year for skipping a class two days before the section final. He enrolled at Minnesota for a semester about two years after high school, but never did become eligible and dropped out.

stafne and jake johnson are no WAY spehar and locker i watched them all play never compare the denfeld duo with those two again. Spehar is a legend, and Johnson from Denfeld is not

Johnson is the only two way player of these mentioned and is the best skater and corner player and that gos a long way at the D1 level. He will do well.

Johnson is going on to play for Sioux City I believe. I haven't heard anything "official" regarding Stafne, or any of the other Hunters. I'm not even sure if any of the rest were heavily scouted. Hotchkin I'm sure was looked at but I believe he's a junior or sophmore.

I hope this is true because I really think that of the uncommitted forwards in the Northland Stafne is very, very under-appreciated by opposing coaches, fans, and the press. Both Rob A. Johnson and Jake Johnson have had articles in the Duluth Tribune as well as a few others but really no mention of Stafne. Stafne deserves this he works very hard and has some untapped potential that others in the area may not have. Good luck Chris.

I agree with the fact stafne is underappreciated. He is such a dynamic forward. He is so skilled and is such a natural goal scorer. He had 11 hat tricks this year. This kid should make it somewhere D1 and coaches that dont want him are foolish. Hopefully you will end up with UMD. Good luck.

plz no more comparisons from these two to spehar and locker. Spehar and locker are on a different level then these two. They couldn't even lead Denfeld to state after four tries. Heck denfeld usually doesnt even make it to the section finals. LOL. meanwhile spehar and locker lead east to AA championships should have repeated but reffing ruined it.

I gotta agree, I was forced to play against these east teams from pee-wee {Stewerts} to high school and they were byfar the best in the state from day one. These east teams are prolly unmatched in modern MN hockey.
We all know what they did 10-12th grade.

They don't come close to the Jefferson Teams.
