Biggest Upset Of All Times

If WBL takes down HM tonight, it will be one of the biggest upsets of all times. Why?
1. HM loaded with talent and experience. What do they have, 5 or more players that played Elite over the summer and won it.
2. Best two returning WBL players and D1 prospects (Hansen and Johnson) decide to forgo Sr season and play USHL.
3. Two returning WBL starters kicked off team (One being the lone Elite participant).
4. HM has the Frank Brimsek award winner that never loses to WBL.
I can't imagine another team losing all that talent and still playing in the Section finals.
Don't see how this one can go any other way, but if it does.....WOW.

I think WBL over HM in the 1996 section semis is one of the biggest upsets in this series. HM had beaten them 7-0 and 6-2 in the regular season and outshot them 47-29 in this game only to lose 4-3 in OT.
WBL, of course went on to win the section only to lose their first round state tourney game.

1970 State "single class" Tournament
Mpls. Southwest Indians - 1
Edina Hornets - 0
Double OT
- Fluke Goal
- Border Battle
- Both Teams Undefeated
- Amazing!
On paper it should have never happened but on the rink anything can and it did on this cold night in March at the old Met Center.

To go right along with Burnsville beating them in sections last year.
Two huge upsets.

by Doc Holliday
-Richfield beating Edina in the Section VI semifinals in 1986.
-Osseo beating Elk River, Section 4AA semis in 2000.
-Edina beating Eden Prairie, Section 6AA in 2000 (4 OT's, also known as the "Season's Over Game")
-White Bear Lake beating Hill-Murray, 1996 Section 3AA
-Apple Valley bouncing Holy Angels, 2006 Section 5AA semis
-B'Ville bouncing Holy Angels, 2007 Section 5AA finals
Most of the upsets seem to occur in the sections. Even a state tournament "upset" isn't as large. The '97 title win by Edina, while an upset, was still accomplished by a team that only had 3 losses all season. We're not exactly talking 1980 Team USA with that one.

Greatest upsets???
Two others come to mind. 1982, Hibbing loses to White Bear Mariner in the semifinals, despite having a roster full of eventual D-I signees. And 1991, when Duluth East came into the tourney as a relative unknown and then completely dismantled the top-ranked, Darby Hendrickson-led Richfield club 5-1 in the Quarters.
The East demolition of Jefferson in '95 was a thing of beauty, but it could be argued that it was not an upset.

You have to put JM's 1977 title over Edina East in here. NOBODY, especially O-Town Clown, gave them a chance in that game. I mean NOBODY.
Even though it was not a huge upset, I loved the 1986 final Burnsville over Hill Murray because Herb Brooks commented 'I wish I had some of your money Louie (Lou Nanne of course), so I could put some on Hill Murray because they are going to win this game.' DUH! He was talking about the defending champs. The Braves won 4-1.
Columbia Heights in 1983 over Edina was huge.
Simley over Rochester Lourdes in 2003 was huge. Oh, and Simley had 10 losses that year (11 if you count losing the title game to Warroad).
Is anybody going to mention the Halloween Machine (GR) upsetting the undefeated Hill Murray 2-1 in the 1980 title game?? Jon Casey should have been a Gopher based upon that one game alone. Instead he ended up at ND. Thanks goodness he was with the North Stars for a long time - esp. during the 1991 Cup run.

Two more modern ones.
Grand Rapids (20-8 ) 3, Hill Murray (27-1-1) 2 - 2006 State Semi-Finals. The game after the infamous Grand Rapids stuck in elevator incident.
Grand Rapids (17-7-4) 3, #1 seed (first in history) Edina (25-2-1) 1 - 2007 State Quarterfinals.

Casey was great, but John DeCenzo was brilliant all tournament for Rapids.

1. JM was pretty good in the mid-70s, but you are right. It was considered a big upset because East was a dynasty at the time.
2. If Herb Brooks said that it was because of a few factors. First off, his son Dan played at St. Thomas where he teamed with Randy Skarda but they played second fiddle to Hill-Murray. He would have had a lot of respect for them. Secondly, at Christmas the two played at Met Center and Hill drilled B'ville for two periods. I think it was 6-1 and everyone left. Scott Bloom pulled a Puckett and put the team on his back and made it interesting, but me and my best friend were about the only two that saw it because Met Center had emptied. I think the final was 7-5. Third, Hill was LOADED with Tom and Craig Quinlan, Tuomie, Schmalzbauer, and a slew of other real good players. Horvath in nets. Finally, while B'ville was defending they lost a ton of players off the 1985 team. Finnegan, Luckraft, Borrell, and several more.
As the season went on it was evident to me that the top teams were Edina, who was #1 much of the season, Hill-Murray, who sure appeared to be their equal, and Burnsville, despite a few early losses due mainly to a FB season that ran real long. Oh yeah, they won that too sandwiched in between their consecutive hockey titles.
Teams like Minnetonka, Bemidji, and anyone else believed to be strong were a half-peg or more lower than the big three.
Damian Rhodes busted Edina's hopes and then Richfield followed with another upset of 'Tonka. Paved the way for a Burnsville rematch with Hill. One could assume that the result would be like Christmas, but Burnsville was playing much better at the end of the season. Maybe that will happen with Lakeville South this year.
3. Columbia Heights pitched a perfect game with Tom Pederson and DJ Haller having a great day as well as Reggie Miracle, who seemed to be born for that moment. Edina 1983 was real good just like 1982 and 1984.
I'm hoping this year has some magic we'll remember for the rest of our lives like the years you mention.

If I remember right that '80 USA victory was a bit overrated. It wasn't as if Russia territorially dominated them. Anyone?

Awful coaching by Saterdalen in that one. By the time he figure out the Spehar plan (which he should've after the second breakaway), the game was over.

It was semi-magical since Edina was ranked lower than DE, Moorhead, and Hill. All three had beat them earlier in the year. That '97 final for my money is one of the finest examples of back checking around.

I seem to remember one of the keys to the '86 final was B'villes ability to block a lot of shots. Their defensemen did quite a bit of sliding to help their goalie out.

Don't forget that Burnsville also graduated Kevin Gorg in 1985....he was obviously so good that even Kevin could not name his replacement Tom Dennis.
Burnsville's 1986 team featured three D-1 players in Scott Bloom, Lance Werness, and Mark Osiecki, not to mention a very good D-II play in Dan Brettschneider, who played at Mankato. The Burnsville team was also loaded.
The 7-5 game was a classic. Right when Burnsville made it tight, the Hill coach used the old 'jewelry rule' and got Burnsville a penalty when the game was 6-5. Scott Bloom had the last laugh. Such a great moment after he got the hat trick on the empty-netter - going over to hug his coach and looking out at the defeated private school.
