Why disappointed with 2nd?

Why are teams that lose the finals always close to the point of tears and so let down in team sports? Sure, you lost a game, disappointing I know, but you just got 2nd in state. I'm not saying to lose the game and be jumping around, but in individual sports or team sports where there's round robin play people would be happy with 2nd.

They lost... are they supposed to be happy?
Tomorrow or the day after I think they would realize what they accomplished, but at the moment it sucks.

The kids dreams are to WIN the STATE TOURNAMENT... so when they end up taking 2nd, its heart braking to them that they were THAT close to living their dream, only to suffer the pain of defeat!

Have you guys ever been to a track meet, cross country race, ski meet, gymnastics meet, etc, etc? When they compete like that and the 2nd place team/person is announced they are happy. Sure, they could've gotten 1st, but they didn't; there are 62+ other teams who would be happy to be in their shoes.

Obviously you have never been put in the position to come that close to winning the State Championship but not be able to pull it off...To put as much effort into the game as the kids do in the state tournament it's tough for them to lose...yeah, 2nd place is pretty darn good considering all the teams in the state couldn't get to that game but the point for most teams is to WIN the State Championship, not just GET THERE.

I can't even believe that you just compared the MINNESOTA STATE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP GAME to a gymnastics competition..........enough said!

I've personally been in that situation and i can tell you it takes much longer than "the next day" to start getting a sense of accomplishment from finishing 2nd in state. Yes, it is an accomplishment, but as many people have said, the dream is to finish first and to fall short of that, especially for seniors who aren't going on to play anywhere, is extremely heartbreaking. So, for those of you that didn't win the tournament this year, keep your head up, in due time you will realize what a feat it was to get there and compete in the greatest tournament in high school sports, it is something you will cherish forever.

Team sport vs Individual accomplishment.

kids always look so dissapointed because when they are growing up they dont dream about getting 2nd place they dream about winning the championship and then its a big let down for them when they dont win

Because YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME. In America, more so than anywhere else in the world, we put a premium on being the best there is. The way we look at the world in this country (myself included) is: "Second place is nothing more than the first loser."

Besides being so close to a state title and coming up short another reason for all the tears and looks of sadness another reason athletes cry is that many of them just played there last meaningful game ever. My senior year we had no chance to win a state title but I still couldn't fight back the tears just like the kids who finish second.

What? Have you ever put everything on the line just to finish 2nd or lose that last game? I thinks its more emotions of losing a battle, than finishing 2nd.

Paraphrasing Vince Lombardi, "Nobody remembers who came in second."

And that puts Little Falls where?
It's not the emotion of finishing second, it's the fact of losing the game. Nobody worth their salt is happy when they lose.. They will hold their heads high the next day, but losing is losing...
