This will completely and utterly devastate the Hornets next year! Part of me wonders if they will now be forced to coop with St. Louis Park just to be competitive.

I'm just messing with you....Gleason isn't the kind of kid you can replace, however, I believe the Hornets should be stronger next year than they were this year relative to the rest of the State.

The Loss of Joe Gleason will definitely be felt..from watching the Hornets play at the State Tournament he is truly a difference maker when on the ice and has big skates to fill. If Everson, Lee and Buddish all return they might just be back at the Xcel next year with a chance at winning it all.

With Giles behind the bench ain't going to happen. Wally Chapman...well than we are talking a very nice run for the Hornets, well into the future. It takes 3 lines, and Edina has the numbers. You need to use what is in the tool box. 2008 Roseau and Edina teams are proof of that as a short bench all season kills you in the big games when it counts.

Timer, like many coaches, the thinking is that Giles has been burned by 4th line seniors and doesn't want to deal with any frustrated players so he cuts them. The myth is that Edina didn't have depth in the system. The reality is that the Hornets didn't have depth on the team because kids had been cut and others hadn't been put in places during the season to develop whatever confidence they needed.

Here's the good news...

Giles took the #1 seeded team to state last year and lost to Grand Rapids. He took the #2 seeded team this year and was a paper-favorite in the final game before succumbing to Hill-Murray. He certainly has learned from the defeats about an Achilles Heel. (One would hope.)

I think more interesting than the question of "Will Edina be good?" is "How will Giles handle the team?" Like a horse trainer, he may need to rest the guns (Everson, Lee, Budish up front) with an eye on helping others (Taft, Chapman, Gaarder, etc...) grow. It's a long season and an even further way off. We shall see....

I agree with you totally oldtimer. I couldn't believe how much Giles shortened his bench in the tourney. With three games in three days and the depth he had, there was no reason to ride his horses like he did. They may be the most talented team next year but I doubt they win it. We could see a repeat of this years Roseau team, undefeated regular season then falter when it really counts.

Couldn't agree more!!! Haven't we seen how the Giles "system" works on the big stage. This NHL grinding style (see: constant cycling) and a short bench from the very begining of the season does nothing to help the players actually improve during the regular season.

Wally has shown he knows how to win titles (albeit A). With what is coming through the Edina system, shouldn't we be seeking titles, not appearances????

The elite players that Giles coaches don't improve, they just get tired!!!

The biggest loss is not Gleason, it Cashetta. Yeah, he didn't play great in the state finals, but he was the best goalie in Edina by far and Edina needs to find a good goalie to replace him.

Johnny akeneny will be a solid replacement and in my opinion is a better goalie!

Ankeny, Young, and Girard are all good goalies and all have a good chance of being on the team next season. Cashetta won't be as hard to replace as some think.

Edina ABSOLUTELY has what it takes to win it all next year..but were saying that in march.
-the loss of Gleason is a KILLER, but with our juniors, we will make up for his speed and tenacity in other places.. like size, overall speed, and playing smart. I think Brendan Baker (Captain 09') will be a stand out this year starting along side Regan. He plays smart, doesnt turn the puck over and has a slapper that is to fast for most defensemen to even see. He will be the kid that replaces JG as our star defenseman.

... O, ya... did I mention we still have Zach Budish, Anders Lee, Marshall Everson, and a crop of sophomores that will step up.

Edina does have what it takes, but Roseau, H-M, Tonka, AHA, B-Ville are all strong teams and it will be a great 09 season... too bad ill be at college.

Don't forget Jefferson and Holy Angels, both of these teams are in Edina's section and both exceptionally well coached and returning many players.

Any truth to the rumors that all 3 may opt to the USHL next season?

Jancze, too bad the HS and Youth forums are for discussion of HS and Youth hockey. Edina was Runner-up in HS, won Jr. Gold, qualified for the Bantam state tournament, won Pee Wees and placed both teams in the B final, had the best Squirt team, and had six of the best B teams in the 29-team D6 league. Yeah, nothing to talk about.

Who can give us another thread on the hockey program in Redwood Falls, Crookston, or Two Harbors.

You aren't seeing threads on Edina because they're Edina. This isn't Notre Dame football.

The title of the thread is '08-'09 hornets.......what did you think you were clicking?????? Are you a glutton for punishment????

Or did you expect this to be an NBA thread.

You should click on the Aaron Ness thread, I heard it is about time travel
