Do they change the sections? 2 or 4 years?

and when are teams allowed to switch conferences?

Every 2 years sections change, conference normally always the same because they are the same for all sports.

There is no motivation.
They do their number crunching to get the top 64, add the opt up teams, and they have their two classes.

Then they put the sections together based on geographical lines with consideration for conference and long standing rivalry, trying to follow the traditional lines from history.

Teams move up or down in class by choice or by enrollment. Benilde opted up this past cycle, Bemidji chose not to opt up and went down from AA to A for example. The MSHSL wants sections to have roughly the same amount of teams and be geographically based, not talent level based so if a team moves up or down adjustments have to be made. This past cycle the MSHSL also put in a new policy that accounted for free and reduced lunch recipiants counting as less than a full student due to the fact that hese kids are much less likely to play sports, making this past cycle have so much change, in all sports, over previous years.

the area of sections 2-6 are so close why do they put them so close together? because besides the first round, the games are at neutral sites and they are all close enough where it shouldnt make that big enough of a diference. I mean, i understand then not wanting lakeville south with roseau, etc. but besdies 1,7 and 8?

i meant the area where the teams for sections 2,3,4,5, and 6 are so close together, why do they still focus so much on where they are located?

BTW This thread topic needs a more descriptive name than just "How Often". That could be taken a number of different ways.

So that means Rosemount did not move DOWN to class A from AA in the 2000 and 2001 seasons? They are now back to AA since 2002 I believe.

Amen who_b, but the MSHSL wont do that. I was shocked they did any kind of analysis that was a more involved than counting raw enrollment numbers. It shouldnt stop with lunch recipients.
