USHL Entry Draft

With the USHL Entry Draft taking place tomorrow (Wed) starting at 9:00 am, USHL teams have submitted their respective "Protected" lists to the league's front office. There are some notable MN players with HS eligibility listed and thought I would throw their names out there knowing that the majority will probably not come as much of a surprise:
Charlie Thauwald, Rochester Mayor (Chicago)
Ryan Walter, STA (Des Moines)
Mike Lee, Roseau (Fargo)
Anders Lee, Edina (Green Bay)
Nick Jensen, Rogers (Green Bay)
Ben Hanowski, Little Falls (Omaha)
Danny Mattson, AHA (Omaha)
*Seth Helgeson, Faribault (Sioux City)
Alec Rush, Eden Prairie (Tri City)
*Joe Howe, Wayzata (Waterloo)
*Mike Fink, Hopkins (Waterloo)
*played in the USHL during the 07-08 season
Always fun to see what Minnesota players will be drafted.

It is interesting to me that some of these teams essentially waste a pick by choosing a player that will be a college sophomore next year.

They're banking on the fact the the player isn't happy with their situation, and since they still have eligibility left...
For example, Michael Forney was a third round NHL draft pick, and he's played a combined 19 games for the Sioux in his first two seasons. I'm sure he's looking to play elsewhere at this point.
Ellingson is the clear-cut backup for NMU the next two years. Maybe he thinks he can start elsewhere, or at least backup (with the opportunity to compete for starter) somewhere in the WCHA.
Be assured, if the coach used a first round pick, they've talked to the player and are absolutley certain they'll report.

I understand some of that, but a lot of kids will just transfer in this day and age if they are unhappy. Also, Ellingson played in 9 games last year, starting 8, going 4-4. I would assume a kid like that would transfer before taking a step back down. An unhappy MLB player doesnt ask to play in AAA, he asks to be traded. Just my opinion, but I see your side very clearly also.
