From where this kid was 3 years ago, this is a big accomplishment. This is why you tell your kids that the u15 ,u16, u17 National Teams are a joke. This kid never made any of that stuff, and now gets drafted in the top 50 in the world. I have trained with Derek for 3 years, and there is not a more deserving kid in the world than Derek. Derek you have busted your ass, and deserve all that is giving to you. The Fhit/Impact hockey program could not be happier. Way to go.

Seems to be some shameless advertising here ...........

Too bad ............... give the young man credit and leave it at that. Slap him on the back later.

How is saying a group of people are proud of you advertising? I would say if it started out that he trained at FHIT?Impact hockey and a so on that would be more self pat on the back.

Good for Derek and Congrats to FHIT for HELPING this young man reach his dream.

Congratutations to Derek!

To be accurate... it should be noted that Derek was selected as a member of Team MN and participated in the Select 16 and 17 National Festival's and also played in an International Tournament for Team USA last winter.

He also grew from about 5'7" in 9th grade to 6'1" in 12th grade along with making what must have been a difficult...but turned out to be a very pivotal decision...to leave Hastings for Shattuck after 10th grade.

Derek has worked hard and made many sacrifices to get to where he's at...but he had the natural ability and talent in the first place...then worked extremely hard to capitalize on it culminating in him being selected as a 2nd round NHL draft pick and I'm sure he will continue to work just as hard going forward.

BTW....Justin Jokinen was the only forward ...who played in both the Fall HS Elite League and MN High School Hockey last winter... to be selected in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft...while Gardiner, Ness, Fienhage, Olson and Gleason were selected as defensemen.

Doesn't matter how he got there, it takes talent - he has it, he made it, so congrats and best of luck to the young man! :D
