Could somebody explain the recruiting rules again? How is there a recruiting battle for kids that haven't played their junior seasons yet? I thought contact couldn't be made from coaches until right before their senior year in high school. I thought the high school junior player had to contact a coach directly in order to express interest. If that's the case, how would their be a recruiting battle?

Still doesn't explain the "recruiting battle".

By the time you hit September 1st of a player’s junior year, a college coach can mail and Email you as much material as they wish. They will make optimum use of that channel to get their points across.
You can also consider it a battle in the sense that one school offered him a scholarship and the other one countered it soon afterward.
I am not sure what the point is in getting caught up too much in terminology. Use whatever term you wish to describe it. It doesn’t change the fact that one school outdid the other.
Another example happened yesterday with Max Gardiner committing to the Gophers rather than Wisconsin.

It's really not that big of a mystery. Colleges are limited in how much they can contact the kids and the kid's family directly, but they can talk to the coaches all they want.
Illustration...
Greg Vannelli: "Hey Christian, Dave Hakstol wants you to come up to visit this weekend, Mike Eaves wants you to visit next weekend, and Don Lucia wants you to visit the weekend after that. They all told me that they think you're a great player and I think they'll all probably offer you scholarships."
See... it's pretty easy to get around the NCAA rules.

I know for a fact that Tom Vanelli took Christian on one of his visits. Tom was very influential in his decision. I don't think he ever went on a visit to North Dakota.

Congrats to Isackson! I finally got to meet him about two weeks ago and he seems like a great kid, the gophers are lucky to have him.

"This past spring, he was one of a number of Minnesotan kids that tried out for the USA NTDP. He impressed enough to gain an invite to the program but eventually declined the opportunity."
That's crazy. How often do players get invited to the NTDP and decline?
