What are your thoughts about the team for the upcoming season ?

Are we going to be a contender or a .500 team ?

Are we going to challenge Edina and Mtka this year in the Classic Lake ?

Since "we" won't tell us and "they" are upset, I will try and drop some knowledge.

Wayzata returns 8 skaters and 2 goalies from a 7-15-4 season [1]. The skaters combined for 55 pts in 26 games. Including leading point scorer Billy Soule, who had 20[1].

Senior goaltender Ty Simcoe logged 1100+ mins. last year and had an .869 save pct[1].

The class of 2010 [now juniors] made it to the Bantam A state tournament[2]. I am unsure what place they took.

The class of 2011 [now sophomores] also made it to the state tournament last year and took third[3].

The last two paragraphs were supposed to help you infer Wayzata appears to have a lot of young talent. Whether this means instant success or not is beyond my judgement. Just giving the facts.

However, there competition is tougher than ever. With the consensus number one team in the state[citation needed] (Edina) in there conference. Along with Minnetonka, Hopkins, and Armstrong, regular season play will prove to be tough

And there section doesn't get much easier. With the reigning 3rd place champions[2] Benilde St. Margerets in there section, along with Eden Prairie, Tonka, and Hopkins, making it past sections will be no easy task.

And this took a lot longer than expected so I hope this sparks a solid conversation.

Papa Bergundy - I am not upset and I have no insights about the team or the players. I live in the community. I have no kids in the hockey system. I am an avid hockey fan. I wanted to get a thread going to talk about the upcoming season. Thanks for your insights. Much appreciated. I hope the Trojans do well this season and can challenge the top tier teams in the Classic Lake and in the sections.

Despite the record Wayzata had last season, they were for the most part more competitive than the results would suggest. The section results last year were a good indication of the competitiveness of the field. Wayzata loses to Hopkins in overtime, who loses to Minnetonka in overtime, who loses to Benilde in overtime, who loses to Edina in overtime (who had beaten Burnsville in overtime), who.... oops, the pattern didn't quite hold.

When Wayzata played 5 on 5 they were pretty tough, but they just couldn't stop themselves from taking penalties, which allowed other teams to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the power plays. If they improve that it could be a better year, although the section could be a repeat of close games.

Agreed.

I believe Wayzata had the most difficult rated schedule in H.S. hockey, last year, and 3rd most difficult the year before.

They'll be very competitive.
Kudo's to these boys for staring down the best in the business, game after game.

They would be more competitive if they taught clean, skilled hockey in Wayzata. They need to stay out of the box in order to be competitive. The Wayzata games (at all levels) are always some of the dirtiest games with lots of cheap hits and unsportsmanlike play. Play clean and you'll be more successful. Must be the coaching - not the players - since it's so prevalent in most the Wayzata teams.

I agree with you they are the cheapest bunch of cake eaters around. What do you do with daddy's money? Bust $200.00 of it over some unsuspecting opponents noggin' and go to the box.

Wayzata is NOT known as a "cheap" or "unsportsmanlike" program. And in terms of success across the program (all levels) Wayzata stacks up with the best.

Wayzata is NOT known as a "cheap" or "unsportsmanlike" program. And in terms of success across the program (all levels) Wayzata stacks up with the best.

Wayzata is not deliberately cheap, it's just at times they have been so over matched they turn to cheating to try and make some headway.

I wish them the best -- however, until there are some changes in leadership I suspect the HS teams will continue to underperform compared to the Youth Teams.

Davis hired a new assistant coach this year, Pat O"Leary who I believe played at Armstrong and then the Gophers. I was told last year he was an assistant at Orono, but I don't know if that's true.
