Black Tape for Forwards and Defensemen

White tape for Goalies

Very simple...using black tape on a shooters stick sometimes can provide an advantage in that a goalie can't see the release of the puck. This split second can make a difference between a goalie reacting in time or not.

Same applies for goalies. White tape allows them to see the puck peripherally if its down near their stick area.

While both are minor advantages to why one should use certain tapes, ultimately a player needs to decide if it makes a difference for them.

Be careful when using black tape on the stick end, it is more abrasive and will where out glove palms much faster..

Some teams also do not like black tape on the knob as it may scuff onto light color jerseys. But agree - always black tape on the blade.

Throw on some electrical tape on there and you will be just fine, I have been using it ever since my gloves got torn up, and I have not had any cuts since using electrical tape.

I grew up in the days of friction tape. The black tape of today sticks better than friction tape does. It should give a very slight edge in hiding the puck compared to white. The modern black tape is just the white dyed black so it shouldn't hurt the gloves. The adhesive is black so yes it could mark up a jersey (oh no!) but don't most mark come from getting hooked rather than from your own knob?

You're best off just using the tape that you like. The difference is nothing big. Best hockey tape is at... www.howieshockeytape.com

Black tape on the blade, white tape on the top.

The reasons for black on the bottom have already been discussed..

Ask any goalie what they would prefer the opposing team use, and why..

Also, shooters should always tape from the toe back to the heel, so there will be less resistance from the ridges created by the tape... Sounds silly, but it makes a lot of sense to most superstitious hockey players!

Black tape should be used because it becomes the target for a team mates pass.

Ever hear that phrase "tape to tape".

Uh...........what?

So, if a team used green tape, let's say, they'd be fully confused on where the "targets" are?
