Hi, I was fortunately able to come across this message board. I have been looking for away to keep up with MN High School hockey. Last year my only hope was Pointstreak, and I found that sight to be insufficient. Anyways, I'm a former spud keeping my spirit alive, and I'm wondering how they are going to be this year?

Watched Tonka beat the Spuds 3-0. Breck beat em 5-0.

Think it's gonna be a loooooooong season for Spud fans (but the Tater-Haters will love it!).

Just for your information, two of Moorhead's best defensemen never played a series all weekend. It made a difference.

Also, goalies were being switched out all weekend too, so that played a big role

Might be a tough year. Didn't score a goal in 2 scrimmages, offense could be a problem?

These are just pre-season scrimmages.Moorhead had approximately 30 kids that they were looking at.

So doubleeagle, you seem to follow the spuds. What is the situation with Moorhead's Offense, D, and Goalies?

Don't think it'll take long to find out where the Spud's season is going.
Our toughest tests at the begining of the season will be of course Roseau, Duluth East, and our first game in the Schwans Cup is against Edina, so after those games than we can judge how the season will go. I for one agree with doubleeagle when he says that pre-season scrimmages don't mean anything. A lot of the kids that played with the "varsity group" won't even play a minute in a regular season game.

Morgan7 wrote:So doubleeagle, you seem to follow the spuds. What is the situation with Moorhead's Offense, D, and Goalies?
Well Morgan I also follow the spuds fairly close and I will say that the speed with our forwards will become a big factor in games. The three Seniors to watch out for are Alex Altenbernd, Jordan Doschadis, and Trent Johnson. Johnson and Altenbernd are two out of the three captains. Our entire second line will be made up of Juniors that also dressed last year with the Varsity. In addition to that, two of those Juniors played a few minutes as Freshman. We also have 4 solid defenseman, including another senior captain, Jason Strand. Our goalie started last year as a Sophomore. I would expect a big year from him. I hope I answered your question, and if I didn't either ask doubleeagle, or respond to this and ask me more. Also, glad your keeping the Spud spirit alive.

No thank you very much 218 you answered my question perfectly. Well with all that being said it looks like a successful year for the spuds.

Well we can only hope. I have faith in the Spuds this year, and I think this is the year we finally get back to state.

Look at who they have coming back, look at what came in from bantams.

Landman, Knock-a-moose, Oliver, Westin as seniors (to name just 4).
Omdahl, Johnson to name just two Sophs.

Goaltending losing Lee hurts, but the next guy will be almost as good.
The next guy, I am not sure if it will be an upperclassman, but hey have several good ones available. One will be good either right away or at least by mid-January.

The roster has several D1 boys and potential players.

I heard Oliver has been sort of fighting a injury while playing go the Force and one of my friends said that the next goalie for Roseau, Mccash? Not sure of the spelling, Is not very good at all. My friend played at Elites and he said he is not very good. He said he let in 9 goals in 2 games. Just what my friends said.

Still had to be good enough to make it to the Elite league.

Mekash is one of two srs. There is a jr that is also on varsity, but the soph goalie (cannot remember his name right now) may play into a starting role ala M Lee.

Is it true with Oliver and the injury, and do you think it will effect his play and the team overall?

Well I hve to assume your friend is from Moorhead and htus played with Mekash this fall.
The word I heard was that Great Plains was weak on team D. That would include the goalie, but would include your friend also.

But what the heck time will tell.

3 4 years ago the Spuds were the cream of the crop and now they seem to be struggling. Moorhead is a strong program but every teams has a few down years here and there and it seems as if Moorhead is looking at those times but....who knows? I mean they certainly can prove people wrong because they'll have their opportunities againist the top teams in the state on a regular basis
