PHANTOM ASSISTS

Here we go again this year. The PHANTOM ASSIST. It's amazing to watch as certain players go strait to the refs after a goal to claim an assist. Has anyone else noticed this? Any idea how to stop it?

Give it a rest. Kid is a great hockey player and he is proving that with the Gophers.

Back on the topic phantom assists happen most of the time it is just a refs error. Sometimes kids say that they have the assist. I have even seen coaches say that a certain kid has got an assist. Its part of the game just like questionable penalties and goals.

when one of my players does it, I bench him for a couple of shifts. A player's job is to play - not keep score - that's the score keeprs job. If they want to be the score keeper - than they don't need to be on the ice.

I like this...a player should'nt be worrie about how many points they have. that can only mean a player is selfish, and selfish players should be sat down. but there isnt really a way to stop it unless a coach does something about it. it really isnt a huge deal, and its gonna continue to happen, but i agree with you about sittin that player for a shift.

Perhaps if refs did a better job...last night at the Mayo/JM game, the refs did not have the right guy on the 1st goal and obviously blew an assist on Mayo's 2nd goal calling it unassisted when it was obvious to hundreds of people that slamming a goal in the back door requires a nice pass from a teammate most of the time!~

I know 95% of you would want to get the assist if the ref didnt give it to you or got the wrong number...don't come on here saying "assists don't matter, I just want to play" well yeah you want to play and get points too. \:D/

I think what is most important is that everyone from a team is on the same page. If you have certain kids going and adding assists with the referee or claiming they had assists, right or wrong the potential for problems exists. I don't see the same kid go and tell the ref that he shouldnt have gotten an assist when he received an assist by mistake. So either let the mistakes wash themselves out or make sure you have a team representative correct points on a consistent basis. When the team corrects points for certain kids but not all kids are treated equally you will have problems. I have seen and watched this occur.

How about some integrity, claim what you earn.

Also, if a ref indicated an erroneous assist hopefully the kid that was credited has the class to correct the mistake. That shows tremendous character and sense of team.

If a Captain takes an phantom assist what does that say about his leadership?

not completly true, points arent everything college coaches look at, example Nate Breden- threw up a rediculous number of points, but where is he now? yes coaches will be conerned if a kid whos commmited is struggling but 4 extra assists a year wont get you a scholly. if you ask me if there is only one assist on the goal adding a second wont hurt anyone, and if thats how you want to get your points, good for you. what i do have a problem with is taking an assist from another player. most jr teams will fine you for this.

just fyi because this has been bugging me its not called "phantom assists" the technical term is chizzeling.

and if someone on the bench snakes an assist it's a "pine apple"

that concludes the lesson for today do the assinged reading tonight as well as the problem set on page 4

Tee second assist in hockey is the biggst joke in sports. Its only accurate in the pro's and in college where there is video replay. In high school games its only accurrate half the time.

Someone said points don't matter that much? I have to disagree. If a defensemen can rack up a bunch of assists, he will get more looks then a defensemen with next to none. The assist point usually means that player can move the puck and can get open enough to take some shots for the rebounds.

The looks I'm talking about aren't necessarily just from the D1 scouts, its also from the D3 and Juniors scouts. Plus/minus is a better indicator of a defensemen, but some teams don't keep that stat or report it. That leaves the points as the only stat that someone can look at and draw a conclusion from to see if a visit would be worthwhile. If a d-man (lets say from southern MN where there is limited viewing) is getting a lot of points, it might raise an eyebrow from a scout to take the time to check him out and see if he could fit into their system.

Plays happen pretty fast and its not easy for an official to catch the number of the first assist, let alone a second. Coaches should be paying enough attention to what goes on to let the officials know if a first or second assist needs to be awarded and if the players number was messed up. From my experience, some coaches don't care and others seem to give that phantom assist to help that kid move onto higher levels. Points matter.

i guess what i meant to say is that while getting point will get you noticed it will probably not be the deciding factor as to whether or not you geta scholarship or play jr's. and i dont totaly agree with your example, if akid is good enough toplay jr's or college, then with as small as the hockey world is someone will probably find him. if not then it should fall on the coach to make a few calls for him.

I've watched Virginia 3 times this year and Hendrickson seems to do this every single goal weather he is near the play or not. I was at the Heritage Center when the ref was going to report the goal he followed him over to the box, its getting out of hand.

There is nothing wrong with a player asking for credit where credit is due (so long as it is truley due). Did you actually watch how the goals were scored? He earned the assists on both goals, as he has all year long. I have watched Virginia play five of its seven games this year and have yet to see one instance where he was credited with an assist where he didn't actually earn the assist. In fact, one of his assists was actually given to Andrew Judnick in their game against Hopkins. Bottom line is that the kid sets up a lot of goals...

It seems you have something against Garrett Hendrickson, seeing how you have mentioned him in all of your last three posts (out of 5 total). There is no need to dog the kid because he is meeting expectations.

PS - You don't need to be near the play to get an assist. Even goalies get assists.

I was watching the ER vs. EP game tonight... and you should've seen those city kids skating to the refs after every goal... you could read most of their lips... "I got the assist","I passed it to him"... It was something I've never seen before! Unreal, why would a kid do this???

Stupid Topic. It used to happen, It still happens, It's going to keep happening, no need to talk or complain about it.

Ryan Hawkins patented the Phanton Assist years ago, way before Aaron Ness' days.
