Can anyone tell me what the rules are for a scrimmage to count as a scrimmage and not a game?

I heard a rumor that a team is being forced to forfeit one of their remaining games because they held an alumni game during Christmas break. The reason is because they wore their actual game jersey.

THAT WOULD BE RIDICULOUS!

Ridiculous, perhaps, but it is also the rule and has been for some time. Coaches and AD's need to know the rules.

During a scrimmage, a school cannot:
-charge admission
-wear game uniforms
-keep score
-use paid officials

There are a few other rules, those are the ones that come to mind

Why don't teams come together to have a "game", announce it to the public, not charge admission, have a couple parents ref, not "keep score", and wear practice jerseys?

It wouldn't be officially a game, but they could run it 95% like a game with maybe a few minor changes. Teams already use the ice to have practice, they'd simply have twice as many kids on the ice, one team would have to worry about travel and they could make money on concessions.

That's pretty much what this Alumni game was. They've been doing it every year for as long as I remember. I don't think they even have refs for the game. But they were wearing their jerseys for a team picture in the local paper after the game.

Unless MN hockey has different rules from baseball, you are incorrect on some counts.

We played in Florida last year during Spring Break in a Disney Tournament.

Admission: They sure as hell charged admission to see us play in the Atlanta Braves stadium.

Game Uniforms: Correct, game uniforms cannot be worn.

Keep Score: We kept score, so that those Kentucky boys knew how much they were gettin whupped by a team from Northern MN!

Paid Officials: Pretty sure Disney payed those umps.

The "scrimmages" were actually games, but as long as we didn't count them on our schedule or wear game jerseys no one cared.
There was a bit of a mix-up however, as to pickup another game because West Virginia dropped, we played the Florida state champs as they were gearing up for playoffs. They tried to count it as a game, and the MSHSL had none of that. Eventually it was resolved.

I think it is preposterous to think that the MSHSL would take a game away from a team for doing that, otherwise why wouldnt some teams throw in a game versus their Bantam A feeder programs? Or maybe the Junior Gold? Hey if they wear their uni's it counts...

I dont know for sure... I know that when my high School played pre season scrimmages they payed officials. Maybe it has to do with when the season started for the baseball, Spring Break is usually the first week of baseball.

So if 1 team wears game jerseys and others do not does it only count as a game for that team?
