Rankings for 2/1

February is upon us, and we're moving into the last few weeks of regular season play. It was an odd week in HS hockey, to say the least. Here are my top 15.

The numbers after each team are their record against a group of roughly 25 top AA teams, plus a few other high-quality opponents (STA, Fargo South, Shattuck, other prep schools). These are by no means the method by which I am ranking them, I just decided to throw the numbers in there. The number in parenthesis following this record is the number of losses or ties to all teams not included in that group.

Incidentally, despite some significant rough performances, I did the top 5 from scratch and ended up with the same results as last week...go figure. I guess I knew what I was doing. :D

1. Bloomington Jefferson 6-0
-They didn't have a particularly great week, but neither did the teams immediately behind them. Their hold on my #1 spot is a lot more tenuous than their record makes it look. 3 home games this week against teams that, while not word-class competition, are capable of an upset if enough things go right.
This week: Tues vs. Apple Valley, Thurs vs. Eagan, Sat vs. Moorhead
2. Edina 12-2 (1)
-The loss to Centennial has led to a number of questions about this team, which have been discussed at length elsewhere along here. Again, their hold on this spot is not that strong. Huge week ahead that will make or break their Classic Lake season and seriously test their resilience.
This week: Thurs at #6 Minnetonka, Sat vs. #10 Wayzata
3. Blaine 4-1-1
-Easily the hottest of the top 4 right now. I was sorely tempted to rank them higher, but that 8-4 loss to Edina still stands out like a sore thumb.
This week: Thurs at Champlin Park, Sat vs. #15 Elk River
4. Centennial 6-1-2 (1)
-I was just about ready to name them #1 after the big win over Edina, then they went out and tied Moorhead. The Cougars did prove themselves a legitimate contender for the state championship this week, but the letdown leaves question marks.
This week: Thurs at Anoka, Sat vs. #13 Maple Grove
5. Eden Prairie 6-3
-Have been continuing their methodical march through the Lake. Some intriguing matchups on the docket this week as they face two teams which have both notched notable upsets in recent weeks.
This week: Tues at Lakeville North, Thurs at Hopkins, Sat at Burnsville
6. Minnetonka 5-5
-One of the hottest teams in the state of late. That all goes on the line on Tuesday, when we'll see if they're truly a title contender as they go up against an Edina team that has looked increasingly vulnerable.
This week: Thurs vs. #2 Edina, Sat at Hopkins
7. Duluth East 6-1-1 (2)
-Should really be ahead of Tonka by virtue of their win over them earlier this season, but they're still serving their sentence for the Century loss in my book. Marched through some 7AA competition this week and looked a bit better than they have been at times recently.
This week: Tues vs. Superior (WI), Sat at Apple Valley
8. Benilde-St. Margaret's 5-4
-Gave Shattuck a good run, all things considered. Most of their remaining games are cupcakes against the North Suburban, with AHA being the notable exception.
This week: Tues at Osseo, Thurs at St. Louis Park, Sat at Chisago Lakes
9. Holy Angels 5-4-1
-Did not stick with Shattuck at all. While I can't really penalize them too much for that, the fact remains that this team still doesn't really have a major victory against Minnesota competiton, which you can't say for anyone else in the top 10.
This week: Tues vs. New Prague, Fri at Red Wing, Sat vs. Shakopee
10. Wayzata 6-5-1 (1)
-Played Tonka very well but came out on the short end this past week. Recovered well by beating Hopkins an snapping a 3-game skid. Have all week to rest up for their 3rd shot at Edina this year.
This week: Sat at #2 Edina
11. Woodbury 6-1 (3)
-Followed up a quality win over Stillwater with an ugly one against Hastings. Still not really showing that they're in the same tier as the teams above them.
12. Hill-Murray 4-5 (1)
-The SSP win was definitely a step in the right direction in the effort to recover the season. Two huge games against single-A teams this week.
This week: Tues at Mahtomedi, Sat at St. Thomas
13. Maple Grove 1-2-2
-Tie against Elk River was a step in the wrong direction, but I'll let them keep this spot for now. Get their second shot at Centennial this week; we'll see how they deal with them now that they've got Pitlick back.
This week: Thurs at North Metro, Sat at #4 Centennial
14. White Bear Lake 2-6-1 (2)
-Playing much better lately, for what it's worth. Still not near the level of the top 10, but things are lining up for a good run through sections. Revenge against Stillwater is a must for legitimacy.
This week: Thurs at Stillwater, Sat vs. Hastings
15. Elk River 0-7-1
-Had a good week, playing AHA well and tying Maple Grove. Very important week, with a major game in the 7AA seeding process followed by a serious test.
This week: Thurs at Andover, Sat at Blaine
---
On the outside looking in:
-Hopkins. They played Wayzata well enough to move onto the very cusp on the rankings, though they still look like they'll have serious trouble cracking the 6AA tournament. Can continue to up their stock in the Classic Lake.
-Moorhead. Two big wins and a tie mean the streakiest team in the state is back on the edge of consideration. That stretch of awful losses is quite the puzzle. How much better are they right now? We'll find out this week against Jefferson.
-Stillwater. They've tailed off quite a bit recently and are therefore no longer in the immediate picture. Have a chance to restore order this week vs. WBL.
---
Beyond that:
-Roseau, though still pretty distant from the picture, at least asserted some northern dominance of 8AA this week.
-The mediocre muddle of Lake teams have done nothing to separate themselves, with Eastview going down to previously winless Rosemount and Burnsville failing to quite break through against Apple Valley, a game that ended in a tie.
-In the 4AA chase pack, Roseville took a step backwards with a loss to Mounds View, while Tartan continues to assert itself as a possible contender, albeit against weaker competition. They have a telling week ahead of themselves, facing SSP and Stillwater.

Enjoy the week. As always, I welcome healthy discussion.

Stillwater has a tough week.

Tartan Tuesday night
WBL Wednesday night
CDH Saturday night

It will help the Section 4 seedings but it's anyones State spot right now.

Hill = is deep into the "practice part" of thier schedule
Roseville = will come ready goalie playing well in big games
Stillwater = needs to get healthy and put the puck away
WBL = is healthy and playing well
Tartan = can smell blood in the water and wants some respect
MV = is showing some life

Will Johnson or NSP play a spoiler this year?

One comment on your "mediocre muddle of Lake teams". Eagan with a 5-1 win over Lakeville North has won 7 out of there last 8 and established themselves as the #3 team in the Lake. Only loss in last 8 was to Eden Prairie 2-0. They have 3 solid lines and playing well right now with 12-5-1 overall record. Key game vs Burnsville on Tues and then the undefeated Jags on Thurs.

Sorry, gotta disagree on this one this week. Blaine may have been hot tonight. But that's about it. Thursday Blaine beat Osseo only 4-1 to where Centennial beat them 9-1 last week and both teams beat Coon Rapids recently by the score of 7-2. I was at both of those games and Centennial looked 10 times better against them than Blaine did even though the scores were the same. As for Moorhead, these two teams ALWAYS play each other close. Last year it was a one goal game 6-5 Spuds. The year before it was 3-2 Spuds. I also remember a game that was a tie in the Schwan's Cup as well as the year Centennial beat Moorhead 1-0 for the State Championship. I haven't looked at the final between Edina and Armstrong, but I thought I saw a 2-0 score after two. Not to dominating. I would still put The Cougars at #2!

I guess I won't be making this my first stop come time for my Sunday coffee and fresh rankings. I got them before I went to bed! Thanks again!

Karl, can't get as excited as you about Blaine. Flip Centennial and Blaine, I think you got it.

karl, i agree with your rankings for the most part with the lone exception of flip flopping centennial and blaine. and as MN Moose noted, the muddled lake conference probably starts with Eagan and not AV Eastview or Burnsville. Eagan is 12-5-1 and 9-4 in the lake I believe (good enough for a distant 3rd in the lake behind EP and Jeff)

I think it really depends if we are ranking the teams based on the outcomes of their games, or how they "usually" play against certain teams. Edina has the best top line in state, and come tournament time when things are on the line, they will step up and dominate. They would still be my #1 if it was about what we knew about the teams. Simple fact is, despite how they normally play Moorhead, they tied a mediocre Moorhead team this year. Blaine has had one stumble this year, along with beating East, something Centennial couldn't do.

So with Centennial's ties of East and Moorhead, Edina's losses to Centennial and Hopkins and Jefferson's almost losses to both Lakeville teams factored in, who's to say Blaine isn't #2 or even #1 right now?

Like I said in the Class A thread, all this needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Any of the top 9 teams could play any of the others competitively. All of the top 5 could make a really good case for why they are the #1 team, but the world may never know. We have the games played this season to go by. Everyone looking at the games will bring their own personal bias and we will really never know who would come out on top if they played a round robin.

My top 10:
1. Edina
2. Blaine
3. Centennial
4. Eden Priarie
5. Holy Angels
6. Jefferson
7. Duluth East
8. Minnetonka
9. Maple Grove
10. Elk River

I'm going to cut MG some slack at the 11th spot, looking at pointstreak they out shot the Elks 34-22, and had four times as many penalties. Must have been a tough game for the Crimson. Wayzata is still a big question mark for me, but I think they could do some things in the playoffs.

This is true. Since this is a weekly ranking, I feel I do have to give a bit on what's been happening week-by-week. I'll reward hot teams and go lower with struggling ones.

That said, the body of work over the course of the season is still the primary basis for all of this. That's why I Edina is still at #2. If I were a bit more reactionary, I'd probably have them down at 4 right now.

On Blaine, they seem to do a bit better against good, common opponents with Centennial, Edina aside, and don't have a stupid loss, which Centennial does in WBL. So that's the basis there, although the margin is tiny, and I consider the top 4 to be very fluid right now.

EP is at 5 because their only losses have been by 1 goal to the top 2, but I think you have to draw the line somewhere. Top wins are necessary at some point.

And on the Lake...my rundown on recent action was only highlighting a couple of key points, and I wasn't trying to slight Eagan. In fact, if I were forced to do a 16-20:

16. Hopkins
17. Moorhead
18. Eagan
19. Tartan
20. Stillwater

I haven't really talked about them much, but they should be getting some credit. Probably the 2nd-best team in 3AA right now.

I dont like it when people compare "blow out" games. You cant compare who beats coon rapids better because both blaine and centennial play their JV teams and 4th liners against them.

As for Osseo, blaine was without Turnquist the entire game. They also had Tufte and Bayer sitting out in the first period.

Plus if you want to compare scores, Blaine beat East and Centennial tied them. Blaine beat Maple Grove 6-1 and Centennial beat them 2-1. Right now I would give the slight edge to Blaine because they tied Centennial on the road.

As always, great job Karl. We should make your rankings the official one.

Yes, this is all true, but my point was, or disagreement, was Blaine is HOT. I didn't see Blaine being a HOT team other than the Anoka game. Centennial was without Pitlick by the way in the Maple Grove game. And the 1st liners for both Blaine and Centennial, against Coon Rapids, played just as much as any other game. If they did play less, it sure wasn't much.

The key point about Blaine was that they were the "hottest team in the top 4." With Jefferson not really blowing teams away they're able to in the past week, Edina's 2 recent losses, and Centennial's tie, I'll stick to that.

There are definitely hotter teams state-wide, like Minnetonka.

How could you possibly have Jefferson so far down? Although they arent playing the creme of the crop for teams, they are still undefeated. And they beat Eden Prairie straight up so why are they rated #4?? Not to mention the Jags beat Duluth East, Blaine and Centennial all in the same day during their November scrimmages.

These rankings are absurd.

The only there are three differences between EP and BJ's schedules; Edina, head to head game and margin of victory between opponents.
1. Although losses, EP has played Edina twice and lost by only 1 goal. During both of those meetings, Edina was rated #1 by most. Losing by 1 twice to the #1 team could easily put you at #2.
2. One game doesn't make a season. Someone gave Blaine more credit than Centennial for the away tie. In one game, losing by 1 away isn't a huge deal. Means they're similar teams. If Jefferson wins the 2nd meeting in EP, that changes things.
3. Eden Prairie has done better against common opponents.

These three things together puts Eden Prairie higher than Jefferson in my book.
Jefferson is very similar to Little Falls in my eyes, relative to their class.

Scrimmages mean next to nothing.

where do I start

1. has nothing to do with the jags, because Jefferson has not played Edina. Edina is a great team, yes, but not a common opponent so we cannot gauge ability based on an Edina game.
2. your right, one game doesnt make a season, but it gives us an idea of what Jefferson can do, and that is beat Eden Prarie.
3. Edina Prarie has scored more against common opponents, because they do not rotate in full jv lines like Jefferson does in those games. Look at the Jefferson roster against Kennedy, Rosemount, etc..you will see presence from Jefferson's JV team.

I understand you think EP is a good team, I think they are a VERY GOOD team, and next two years they might win state (maybe even this year). However, Jefferson is the better team for now, being as they met up and Jefferson won. Until EP beats Jefferson, you have to give Jefferson the higher ranking.

You're entitled to your opinion.
1. To say losses against uncommon opponents don't count would change a lot of rankings out there.
2. Teams end up ranked below teams they have beaten closely once all the time. It's for that very reason. That's what, in this case, the second game is for.
3. Needing OT to beat a team who has won one third of their games is an issue.

Neither opinion is wrong, I just put playing Edina close over simply winning all your easy games. Just my two cents. It would be cool to see these two meet in state.

Now that would be a deadly team; mixing both Edina and Eden Prairie' top players would form a team that would almost for sure win sate!

We will all just have to wait until Jefferson goes to EP to battle the mighty eagles! Then when Jefferson wins 2 games head to head HShockeywatcher will have no reason to place Eden Prairie above Jefferson.

Not possible for Eden Prairie to be considered a better team than Jefferson.
Jefferson beat them that makes them better.
Jefferson has not lost to anyone so there is no backdoor logic to saying EP is a bettert team.
