Ok I know winter is getting long but I heard it again today: Team is killling a penalty and the parents are yelling ICE THE PUCK..... DAAAAA your on the penalty kill therefore you can't ICE THE PUCK! Thankfully this wasn't my team.

With as much time as they spend in the rink and on the road, never mind the money I wish they would get this right.....It will be on the top of my list for next years coaches/parents meeting.

If this is the biggest thing you have to talk about in a coaches/parent meeting, you're in good shape.
Perhaps you'd rather have them yell, "Shoot the puck down to the far end of the ice, so they have to go back and get it, thereby taking some time off the clock and minimizing their chances of scoring!!!!!?????"

I wonder what kind of look you would get from referee, if as the Head coach
you were to complain to him about the noncall against your team for icicng the puck while on the PK

well, good humor for a Monday morning, but I will say that the education of parents wouldn't be a bad thing. If you are going to spend so much of your free time at the rink than at least buy a book.

Recently I stopped in at a Squirt game and the kids were on a power play and they were holding the box pretty well. A Dad, standing in the stands, is constantly yelling "Go after them, get the puck. Don't just watch them, get the puck" Honestly, at the top of his voice. After an errant pass (after all we are talking squirts) one of the kids got the puck at about the hash and the dad switches to screaming "Go, Go, Go, skate" regardless of the fact that MH gives the kid the option of icing the puck to kill time and regardless of the fact that there were two kids forward of him on the ice who he could possibly pass to. The kid skates it and loses the puck in the neutral zone. A different kid gets hold of it, he ices it. Eventually the puck ends up back in the defensive end the kids once again box up. Guy starts yelling, different kids on ice now, two kids go to boards to get puck, other teams passes to open kids and they score.

I feel your pain Marty.

Marty, I agree with your thoughts and it makes for an interesting start to a boring day. But, I'm just curious what you would have them yell out. Obviously what they are attempting to say is put the puck on the far end of the rink like when you ice it. To the average fan yelling ICE IT makes a certain amount of sense and obviously the players understand the meaning. The best I could come up with is CLEAR IT but I am wondering what you would have them yell in order for you to be able to relax and enjoy the game and save a lecture at the next coaches/parents meeting.

Questionaire for Hockey Parents.

What should you yell when your team is shorthanded and gets control of the puck in their zone?

1) "Ice it" and risk the scorn of spectators who know the literal meaning of the term.
2) "Clear it" and risk further scorn of spectators who will think you play roller hockey.
3) Consult the handout from your parent/coach pre-season meeting for acceptable phrases. (This was THE reason the meeting was held, right?)
4) Cheer, but refrain from yelling instructions from the stands. The kids get enough from the coaching staff.

Semantics. While technically different, "ice it" is synonymous with "get it out" for practical purposes.

It's still considered icing (until the ref waves it off) which is after the act of icing. So in effect "ice the puck" is the correct term.
