Dan Billiar (Mankato East) vs Austin 2/10/09: 7 Goals ,1 asst.
I realize what the records are of the teams involved, but 7 is still a lot of goals by 1 player. I thought it was worth at least a mention.

he should have had 10 with all the missed opportunities the cougars had in that game...

Thats ridiculous. It doesnt matter how talented the kid is, someone should never be able to score 7 goals in a game. If this team was that bad, why wasnt a 4th line or 5th line playing a major amount of time?
I mean hats off to the kid, hes taught to score, i have no problem with that, but leaving a kid out there to the point where he can score 7 times?

The final score was 9-4 and they rolled all the lines.

Ok. If they rolled all the lines, then I have no problem with 7 goals. Its not like you can tell a kid not to score.

Michael Unzen from Moose lake scored 8 goals and had 1 assist against Ely yesterday. They rotated lines like normal, he just happened to be at the right place at the right time and almost every goal was scored off a rebound!! Absolutely amazing!!!! Final was 10-3.

Alex Whitney from Mayo had pretty much the same score line against Austin two weeks ago.

According to the Duluth News Tribune; Michael Unzen scored 7 out of the 10 goals last night.
Good for Michael Unzen. I heard thats the goal record for Moose Lake and coach Sherm Liimatainen tied for the most wins for Moose Lake with the 16th victory last night.
Congrats!

Sad when people think they're great when they score against sub par opponents. Hanowski scores 7 against GW, so and so scores 7 or 8 against whoever. Let's see these players play someone worthy and score 7 or 8. Will never happen. The scoring record in the state is a joke because not every player is on an even playing field. The St. Francis kid may be a great hockey player, but who in the world has he played? Did he light up BSM? Or any of the other top teams in the state? No is the answer. His points, and many of the other "great" ones points have come against sub par programs in the lower tier. Why is it that you don't see players from very good Class AA programs with these types of numbers? It's because the top teams play stout competition day in and day out. Sure there's some stat games on everyone's schedule, but the consistency of competition dictates their numbers. Put Anders Lee or Danny Matson up against the teams that Benik or Hanowski have played on a consistent basis and they might score 100. It's all relative and the "scoring record" should come with an asterik.

All records are in context of the opponent, era, period length, etc. The story on Michael Unzen of Moose Lake is pretty unbelievable.Recently back after a major knee injury that saw him sidelined for nearly 8 weeks. He comes back and plays in 3 games after sitting out this whole time and skates with a knee brace that limits mobility and movement. Scores 7 goals while the team rotates all lines and sits out the final few minutes of the game. Not in total game condition yet " guts it out". Let's be honest...No one compares with John Mayasich yet the story of Unzen's 7 goals is still special! Dan Anderson and Dylan Peterson tie the State record of 6 assists in a game...Peterson has 4 assists in a period tying the State record. AA schools have a deep talent pool..yes. Small town schools must play with who they have each year...period! The record is still special based on the circumstances! Go Rebels!

Again, I realize neither team has a very good record, and he'd never score that many with the team he's on playing against a top AA or even A team. It doesn't mean that he's still not a talented player. The team he's on has 4 wins now. I've seen him play and if you put him on a team with more good players he'd be capable of scoring against anybody. I've never seen him or Hanowski or even Unzen ever say they thought themselves that great. As far as Hanowski, he chose the Huskies over the Gophers,so I don't think that exactly puts him in the slouch category. A kid scoring 7 goals is still a noteworthy feat unless you have a very good team playing a very bad team and they're trying to run up the score. East has hardly been able to keep teams under 6 goals most of the season, so they needed every goal they could get. It was one of the few highlights they can point to in an otherwise tough season.

It has been 58 years since someone scored 7 goals in a game. Obviously, there have been ample opportunities in that time frame for it to happen. Say what you will, but
every team has at least one of these lower-tier teams on their schedules and nobody has matched this feat until this year. Even Duluth East has Duluth Central on their schedule every year, so the chances are there for these other guys to get their shot against the weaker teams... Bottom line is Billiar, Hanowski, and Unzen did it, the others did not - and in Unzen and Billiar's case, they did it against teams that their team is generally competetive with.

well yes, but mankato east is short on numbers and only really have 3 lines so and billiar is extremely talented

Moose lake scored several ties in state records in the game versus Ely on Saturday February 14. (according to the Minnesota State High school League)
Michael Unzen- 7 goals in a game (tied with John Mayasich, Eveleth, 1951)
Dylan Peterson- 4 assists in a period (tied with Neal Broten, Roseau,1978)
6 assists in a game (tied with Dom Talarico, Proctor, 1997)
Dan Anderson- Also had 6 assists in a game
Pretty impressive numbers considering who they have tied with!!
