I was wondering if anyone can tell me the rules of playoffs. I have noticed in the bantam b playoffs that some districts have double elimination and some single. Just wondering why some teams get a second chance to get to regions and some loss one and there done. Thanks

Think about 6 teams in a single elimination tournement. The top two win one game and they are in the championship. I played in both types of district tournements. The Bantam tourney I played in that was double elimination had us playing a first round game with the winner advancing to play the top seed, Moorhead. Alexandria got to play the winner of another game. Alex and Moorhead ended up in the championship with Moorhead winning, Moorhead was the champion, so Alex waltzes in, wins a game tanks it against Moorhead and goes to regions???? Not that fair. As for us, yes, there was a second chance that whent like this: Loser out bracket, beat Brainerd, knock them out, beat Detroit Lakes knock them out, they get consolation 4th. NOW, play Alexandria who hasn't played since the championship for a "true second place". Beat Alex knock them out we get 2nd they get 3rd. 5 games in one weekend and go 4-1, I think you deserve to go to regions..this begs the question of did Moorhead deserve to go to regions?? They did win 2 in a row and I would've liked to see a "true championship" game played but 5 games in just a bit over 48 hours is plenty. Obviously in an 8 team district tourney you have to win two games to go to regions so Moorhead did. My thoughts......

If you have a chance to look at the district 11 bantam b playoff bracket you will see that it is set up really bad 2 teams have to win 1 game and then the get to go to regions. I think this district needs help when it comes to setting the playoff bracket up. In past it has been double elimination but this year its single and some teams really get the short end of the stick having to win 3 games to get to regions while another has to win just 1. I just wish that the state would have some rule to setting up district playoffs. They need to make all districts have single or double elimination not what ever the fell like.

I think that District 8 has there District Tournment spot on this year. I really like the system that they have. 12 of the 17 teams make the tourney. 1 thru 4 get a bye to the double elim tourny, and 5 thru 12 have a play in game to get into the double elim tourny. 5 playing 12, 6 plays 11 and so on. From there it is an 8 team tournment just like normal, but if you lose there is a back door for 3rd place, and a region spot. The only thing District 8 is missing now is getting the random southern teams out of the district and have a fair schedule for everyone. The southern teams get a much easier season schedule, and it shows in the standings.

Those teams earned their seed. What's wrong with making the regular season worth something. This isn't the NBA!

I got to the district 11 website, they did not however have a bantam b bracket listed with the others. If this is the case of win one game, go to regions, someone screwed up. Make the tourney worth it to participate in. Call the regular season champ the champion, then play a 5 team tournement or something......

Agreed! District 6 has a decent format. Top 2 teams get a bye in first game of double elimination bracket. The double elimination bracket has 5 teams from league play and 1 team coming out of the wildcard single elimination round. I believe that every team gets a chance by simply enlarging the single elimination round to accomodate the # of teams. If that happens, then the higher seeded teams from league play (#6, 7 etc.) get a bye in the early rounds of single elimination. From that wildcard comes the eventual 6th team for the double elimination round.
It allows every team a chance to be in playoffs and rewards the higher seeded teams whenever possible for having a better league season. Being in the top 5 assures you of double elimination round. Seeds #1 & #2 do have a short route to regions BUT if they lose their first game, they go to the bottom half of the double elimination bracket and start over just like everyone else. Pretty fair system.

The District Director decides how teams advance to regions from their district.
Currently every district director lets the association reps decide how this should be done. Each district is different to some degree.
Remember, the district play-offs may/can/should decide who is advancing to regions but they are also used to determine a distrcit champion.

I believe you refer to the DuLuth hockey website??? it is:

That tournement is rediculous, eight teams in the district and two have the opportunity to win just one game to move on??? someone ought to complain.

Thats what I thought not very equal for the eight teams I do understand teams getting rewarded for regular season play but this is just stupid. To give 2 teams a huge advantage.

i really agreed with you up until the whole thing about the southern teams.

You reward the top two teams, generally by who they play in the first possibly second round. Number 1 usually plays 8, 2-7...etc.... if you really want to reward for a good season, make the brackets true and have the top remaining seed always play the lowest remaining seed... not by letting them win just one game and go to regions....My two cents...

I agree through the end but would also like to add the no A team and joining of IGH/SSP. Also huge complaint that D1 gets 2 teams to regionals yet only has 4 teams at the A bantam lvl, also gets the third place finisher with a play-in-game with D4 Third place for a trip to Regionals? The B Bantam lvl has 6 teams with 1 and 2 going to regionals and 3rd playing D4 3rd for a trip. What a joke, go back to the old way where they had to prove it or split them and make them go through another district. D8 has 16 B Bantam teams going for 2 spots no other district has that many. MN Hockey mine as well give the trophies out at the start of the year if you are going to reward mediocridty.

D1 has 5 A bantam teams and 4 A peewee teams they did all they could to make it more fair by adding that play-in game i'm sure that mn hockey wouldn't have let them give that to a team from another district not in the south region.

I understand being mad about 2 of 4 going to regions when 2 of 16 go from another district. However, If you can't make it to 1 or 2 in your district you will probably not make it past regions anyway. Districts and Regions are set up long in advance. It wasn't too long ago that playing a team in D8 was a joke also.

Bigger deal is the top teams from D1 and D4 wouldn't make it past the play-in games for D8. So going 1 or 2 in D8 is a lot tougher then going 1- 2 in D1 and D4. Sorry but in the past 15 years I have been watching D8 I have not seen anything that would concern me from D1 or D4.

D1 would like your association to join them.
Both D8 and D10 should have a few metro associations make the move to D1 and help balance the big Districts. Or D10 has teams move to D2 and a few D2 Associations move to D1. Contact me via PM and I'll arrange for your association to play a series of games in D1 next season. You like the competition, and it feels better suited to your association, like the less travel, and your association can join D1.

Sorry but my time is almost done in D8 and youth hockey. On to High school next year. But would like to see the Metro align more like the High school sections or conferences. Go by counties or something that makes sense.
